As someone very involved with optical physics this is a game changer
for many who struggle with macular degeneration.

From Future Timeline (http://www.futuretimeline.net/21stcentury/2010.htm#augmentedreality)
Macular degeneration - the leading cause of blindness in people aged
65 and older - can now be treated with a miniature "telescope"
implanted in the eye.* (http://www.futuretimeline.net/21stcentury/2010.htm#ref5) Consisting of two lenses within a small glass
tube, this works like a telephoto zoom lens. It combines with the
cornea to project a magnified image of whatever the wearer is looking
at over a large part of the retina. Only the central portion of the
sufferer's vision is damaged by the disease, so magnifying the image
on the eye allows the retinal cells outside the macula to detect light,
refocus it, and redirect the information to the brain.

Interesting. I have some of the very early signs of it, so something to watch. Definitely not my biggest concern right now, since the defective corneas need to get replaced first. :-P

Thanks for sharing.

Projecting outside the fovea centralis wouldn't really give you normal vision, right? It's not like your cones or the nerves feeding them are going to migrate to the new area.

I'll hold out for the functioning replacement eyes, thanks.

Do you have keratoconus?

In recent history wet macular degeneration has been successfully slowed
down.

Yeah. One eye is completely useless right now with everything just being a total blur. I just need to figure out when to schedule the transplant surgery.

Did your doctor try rigid contact lenses?

For the last 5 years I've been using them. When you can't make out the big "E" with it became pretty evident what needs to be done. LOL
