View Full Version : Worth your time
old okie 09-17-2012, 06:37 PM Tired of burgers or chicken, but want a great light meal? If you are willing to make a little drive, this is worth your time.
Go to the Schlotzsky's in Moore! It is located on the north side of 19th St. across from the Home Depot, next door to the Five Guys Burgers. Not only does this Schlotzsky's make their own bread daily, they have a lovely, clean restaurant and great service.
However, the real "bargain" we've found is their $2.99 8" pizza special that is available after 3 PM daily, with the purchase of a drink. We get small drinks, and for the two of us, the total bill is $9.48! :o What a deal. If you feel really hungry, you can add one of their great desserts; we've tried all of them, any one is good. For those of you who think that an 8" pizza won't be enough food, try it, then decide if you need to order something more.
No, we don't work there. We're just retirees who look for great food, great service, and a great price.
BBatesokc 09-17-2012, 07:20 PM I'm not sure what it is about Schlotzsky's, but I only get a craving for their food maybe once a year (if that). Whenever I go I like their sandwiches just fine, I just never want one. Can't explain it. Never tried the pizza - maybe no my next annual visit.
But, talking about cheap eats..... The wife and I go to Lee's Sandwiches a lot and split a grilled chicken on baguette (asian style, heated) and split and order of shrimp rolls and two waters. The total is like only $6 and feeds two! Plus, the caloric hit is only just under 200 calories each - as opposed to about 600-800+ going the Schlotzsky's route (even more with many other fast food lunch options).
RadicalModerate 09-18-2012, 08:23 AM The Original Schlotzsky's Sandwich is one of the tastiest things ever invented. Probably because of the bread and the olives and it's similarity to a Muffelata. But, like Brian, for some inexplicable reason I just never seem to make it to the place. I don't know why. Maybe it's the wait for the sandwich? (good things take a little longer) Maybe it's the price for a Medium Original? (very fair, all things considered). I just don't know . . . But I'll bet I'll be stopping by the nearest Schlotzsky's sometime within the next week or so.

RM, yes, it does take a bit longer to get the sandwiches or the pizzas [which we like even more than Hideaway!], but I can say that the only Schlotzsky's in the metro area that is really, really good is the one in Moore. The difference is whether or not the store is company-owned or privately franchised. The Moore store is the latter. The owner has done all sorts of things [like use real plates instead of the plastic picnic-basket types used by all the other stores], added Wi-fi, flat screen TVs, and personal service. Usually, they will bring around half a cookie for your "tasting" while you wait--at no charge. Unlike the company stores, they bake their own bread right there in the store, fresh daily [that bread is to die for!]. It's hard to describe if you haven't been there, but it reminds us of a cross between a really good Panera and Cheddar's, if that makes sense.
As for prices, they have the pizza special I mentioned, as well as "combo" meals and senior discounts [if you're "of age"]. They have fresh-brewed coffee with numerous types of flavorings available. They also sell the coffee in bulk and contribute a portion of the sales to the local schools. We don't find the prices to be excessive, but generally on par with such places as Qdoba, etc.
Yes, we've been very impressed by the attitude and the food! And for me, the place is clean, which ranks very high on my list.
We've yet to have a "bad" meal there, and if we were to experience one, we wouldn't hesitate to take it back, and it would be cheerfully replaced. I just wish all places we patronize had attitudes like that!

Brian, you are right about Schlotzsky's not being "diet" food! But every so often, we just need a "good" pizza! The "worst" 8" packs in about 670 calories, but w/a diet drink or tea, that isn't bad for a whole meal. We don't usually get dessert. I manage to eat there and still keep my daily calorie count to under 1400 easily.
The chicken sandwich you describe at Lee's sounds really good, and considering that we eat out on average 5 days a week, we're always ready to try something good that doesn't break the bank! We'll "spend" the difference on the gas it takes us to reach whatever part of town we're visiting...and we go all over the metro! Will put Lee's on our "must try" list!

Why does it have to be the Moore location? What's wrong with the other metro locations?

It's not that I'd say there was anything "wrong" with the other metro locations; it's just that the Moore location is so far beyond the others in the quality of the place, as measured by the incredible 'customer-friendly' atmosphere that it makes eating there so pleasant. Either the owner or one of his family members is always there to oversee everything, and that does make a difference.
And to tell the truth, I don't know if the other locations are offering the pizza deal or not. The pizza has become more of our favorite than the wonderful sandwiches. But I know from what the owner has told us personally about their baking the bread right there in the location that helps set them apart. [No, he is not a personal friend, but he meets and greets customers like "old friends" and talks to everyone. That's how we've learned the information. We usually go there a couple of times a week.]

yup.
but the location on Memorial Road is closer.
and the product is the same.
except, perhaps, with extra slowsurliness . . .
ps: when i think "pizza" i think Schlotsky's a long, long time after i've thought and rejected "Chef Boy-ar-di".
it goes back to that ancient clay tablet wisdom saying: "if it ain't broke, don't f*ck it up with diversification."

MadMonk 09-19-2012, 06:31 AM Why does it have to be the Moore location? What's wrong with the other metro locations?
I was wondering the same thing. I love Shlotz...er Schelotz...um that chain, but I usually get it to go, so I don't know about how great each location is. :)
Double Edge 09-19-2012, 08:15 AM The nearest Sch-whatever on my route is across the street from a Which-Wich chicken cordon bleu, my favorite wich. Needless to say, I never make it across the street.
RadicalModerate 09-19-2012, 05:21 PM So, I actually went to the closest Schlotzski's for lunch today-- even after I read some scathing reviews of this particular location on UrbanSpoon, etc. The place was spotless, the staff was friendly and fast, the sandwich (Med. Original) was wonderful and the air inside was filled with the delicious aroma of baked cinnamon rolls. I was almost tempted to buy one of them, but the sandwich and small drink (perfectly mixed Dr. Pepper) filled me up too much to yield. It only cost about a buck-and-a-half more than I usually spend. I will definitely be going back. If the one in Moore puts this location to shame it must be truly amazing.
(P.S.: I used to think that the Arby's version of "Chicken Cordon Bleu" was in the top three of any fast food sandwich.)
corwin1968 09-28-2012, 09:47 AM Schlotzky's still has pretty good sandwiches but they are just a grim shadow of what Schlotzky's was serving back in the 1980's. Maybe the switch from baked fresh daily bread is part of the reason.
