Official open date is October 24 but I believe they will have a soft opening starting Oct. 1.

I happen to agree with you. Ironically, I think Flint should have been named "Shale," particularly since it's an onanistic idyll for the oil and natty gas industry.

If it is an All-you-can-eat, it could be...LOL

I admit, you made me go look it up...creates quite a mental picture of what might be going on back in the kitchen (as has been suggested in a few movies)...

onanistic
adjective
1. Of or pertaining to masturbation
2. In a manner which suggests masturbation; hence, fruitless, self-congratulatory, self-absorbed, pointless

i·dyll also i·dyl (dl)
n.
1.
a. A short poem or prose piece depicting a rural or pastoral scene, usually in idealized terms.
b. A narrative poem treating an epic or romantic theme.
2. A scene or event of a simple and tranquil nature.
3.
a. A carefree episode or experience: a summer idyll on the coast of France.
b. A romantic interlude.

Yesterday, I had a tour of Vast and the 50th floor meeting space.

First of all, Vast is much smaller than I had realized; only about 160 seats. The majority of the 49th floor is private meeting space; the restaurant and bar is only in the southern "triangle".

There are two dedicated elevators for the 49th & 50th floors that you access through the connection to the Colcord. It's the only way to get up to either floor (unless you are a Devon employee) and it's on the far east end of the lobby. You have to walk all the way around to the south or enter from the Colcord connection.

Once you get in the elevator, there are only two buttons: 49 & 50. The ride up is extremely quick and smooth.

When you get to Vast on 49, there is a hostess desk and the bar is straight ahead and the restaurant seating is on either side of the bar area. The bar is small; just the bar itself then a long, high table with maybe 8 chairs on each side. BTW, you MUST have a reservation to even go up for a drink and they are booked through December for dining and bar.

On either side of the bar are two very nice but relatively small dining areas. There is a row of tables along the windows and the others are on a riser so even if you aren't against the glass you have great views. However, this is all facing due south, so by far the less interesting vistas: the old I-40, the river... But you are so high you can see OU and Tinker.

I am hosting a class reunion on the 50th floor and we've rented the whole north side of that floor. THOSE views are fantastic as is the main room.

Photos of all this to follow.

Okay, these are all of Vast and 49th floor...

When you walk past the hostess and towards the restaurant, you are looking straight south. This image is the dining area just to the left (east) of the bar that is straight ahead. There is a mirror-image dining space on the other side of the bar.

http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/vast1.jpg

This is the bar area facing east. To the right (just out of the photo) is the lower part of the "V" of the south triangle. You can see there is just the bar itself and a long table that has about 8 stools on either side. There are about half a dozen chairs along the glass. You can see the east dining area through the glass straight ahead. (They were doing a staff training, hence the people).

This is looking into the west dining area through the glass in the bar. The table in the foreground is actually on the other side of the glass.

I'll post more of the banquet space (and views!) later but here is the largest space on the 50th floor; it basically takes the entire north triangle.

This is where I'll be having my class reunion so I was up there with the event coordinator doing some space planning.

It's a bit hard to see but there is an open atrium directly above the "V". Well, not completely open but when you are underneath you can look up and see the very tip of the crown. We are going to have our dance floor directly under this and facing the glass v. Should be very interesting to see at night with all the LED lights coming through.

Also, in that first pic you can't see it but there is a video screen that can be lowered from that thick cross-beam. So, you can have a video presentation without blocking the great view below.

Last night I went and viewed the banquet space after dark, wanting to think through the lighting for the event I'm planning next summer.

It was interesting to see the LED lights on the upper triangle and on the sides of the building from the inside. Because the fixtures are on the vertical fins, they don't shine directly through the glass. In fact, they don't throw much light into the interior space at all. you can definitely see the light, but it's far less invasive then you would think.

I'm sure this was all intentional and it's really pretty slick.

One weird thing about last night... I walked into the rotunda from the north about 6:30PM and immediately a security guard rushed right over and said, "Devon employee?" (in a way that made it clear he knew I wasn't, although I was nicely dressed). "No, going up to the 50th floor for an event." VERY hostile: "WHAT event?" Ultimately he let me pass but it was very strange and completely unwelcoming, the opposite of how it has felt every other time I've been in the building.

Parking for events and Vast is on the north end; valet parking at the southern end of Harvey and you can self-park in their garage, so virtually everyone coming in enters from the north. I hope they all don't receive such a rude welcome. It's also completely unnecessary because there are signs to the Vast elevator and before you can even get to the glass door to enter the elevator lobby, there is a hostess and another security guard waiting for visitors, checking your reservation, etc.

I should have gotten this guy's name because I doubt Devon would want their guests greeted in this manner.

I know, but I'm just saying. It's like being a fan of railroads. As an everyday citizen we have the right to take photographs of trains. If I get questioned by a police officer, I'm fine with that, so long as they know I'm no harm to anyone.

Its all in 'how' you interact with the public that I think was in question. Big difference in 'doing my job' and doing a job while still be pleasant. I run into police and security all the time..... some are very professional while still being authoritative - while others are complete bullies.

Great pics! Looking forward to I guess going to see it in January considering the booking. lol Security situation has to be addressed.

I remember the atrium being touted by the architects and Devon as part of the "Harvey Spine" in which the average public pedestrian could traverse through it "unaccosted." Essentially, it was supposed to be an extension of the sidewalk environment through the building thus allowing walkability from the CBD to Myriad Gardens, new Convention Center, and Park as if Harvey continued through.

For someone nicely/reasonably dressed with an even more legitimate reason to be in there to be treated in a hostile manner.... It sounds like a reminder memo needs to go out as to why that rotunda was built and that anybody is supposed to be able to walk through there.

Reminds me of Sandridge going after William for taking pictures from across the street. lol

I was treated very rudely one time about the same time of day (not too long ago).

About 545pm on a Thursday. I walk in to grab a few pics (all doors were unlocked and no signs were posted saying it was off limits or closed at certain hours).

"Uhm, you know this building is off limits to the public right?"

Me: "Sorry it was my understanding this building was open to the public, well at least this rotunda area."

"Well that may or may not be true, however at 6pm everyone needs to be out of the building"

Me: *Looks at my phone...5:48pm* "Well it's 5:48 pm, so I have a few minutes then?"

"You should probably go ahead and leave before you are removed for security reasons...unless you are on official business you need to leave."

No security issues last night, but the east lobby fountain poses a unique threat.

It's an "infinity pool" type of fountain with water entering from underneath and spilling over the perimeter walls, and down the sides through a very thin drain going around the base. The water is so still that it gives the appearance of glass - we were laughing of the thought of people thinking it was a bench of some kind, and sitting down.

They may want to keep a couple of towels on hand for people who end up doing that!

I'm sure my security run-in was due to the fact it was the very first night for Vast and they had just had their big opening ceremony earlier that day, and the staff was probably a little over-zealous.

In order to avoid future discomfort bordering on embarassment, such as that described, I would suggest that the TRAINER of the Security Guard in question be placed in stocks along the "public walkway" for ridicule and pelting with un-sellable vegetables from Whole Foods/Sprouts and that you, in turn, lose the turban, beard and shades on your way to enjoy the culinary delights, in the nicely appointed dining area "at the top" . . .

Dang . . . I miss NikZ . . . =)

Had dinner here last week. The restaurant itself is very nice and has a slick design and layout. The food left a little to be desired however. My entree, the dourade royale, was very good, although the portion was a bit small. But I kind of expected that. The appetizers we had were the most disappointing. The lobster ravioli and the pheasant starter were really average at best. The complimentary bread they brought out, kind of a mediterranean style bread, was really good. The others in our party seemed to think their entrees were fairly average, 2 of them getting different steak entrees. Service was excellent. As it should have been since only about 1/3 of the tables were being used. Im guessing they are purposely limiting the crowds early on.

Its definitely a unique and cool setting but the food needs a bit of work. Will be back for drinks and such but probably wont visit it too often for dinner.

Yes, this is a definite change. They specifically required reservations for the bar upon opening.

Keep in mind there are less than 30 seats in the entire bar and very little standing room. I bet they will turn people away if it's too full, as there is nowhere to put them and I'm sure they don't want to distract from the dining experience.

Great view but the food needs some work. Service and views were tremendous. there were 3 of us dining and nothing about the food or it's prep were outstanding. New place and hope it gets better. Small bar area. This could be a great go to spot after work. We had a few drinks and a bottle of wine with dinner and the total came to $450.00 w/ tip. Sort of steep for the "affordale fine dining" that was expressed. Will go back.
