Does anyone know where I can get some rain barrels here in OKC? Thanks to the hail storm last month, I'm getting new gutters and want to add some rain barrels.

Thanks!

Wal-Mart and Sam's both carry them. However, they are seasonal and supply may be limited.

Also, the waterfall type decorative downspouts look really cool attached to them instead of traditional gutter downspouts. I think you have to order those off the Internet though.

Buy online, ship to store for free. Problem solved.

Cheaper if you just go to the store. Sam's had their's on clearance for about $45 and I believe the OKC WalMart location at Sooner/15 had two on price reduction. I actually liked the WalMart one better. The Sam's one looks a little 'Santa Fe(ish)' to me. I almost got one, but went for the clearanced compost bin instead for $15.

'Rain Chains' leading into them can look really cool too (depending on your house). http://www.amazon.com/Monarchs-Copper-Hammer-Chain-Length/dp/B001LNOQH8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1343399620&sr=8-3&keywords=rain+chain

The City's Planning Department hosted a rainwater harvesting seminar yesterday. The speaker said Atwoods has the best ones he's seen and he thought they were only $35 a barrel. Personally, I don't know where the closest Atwoods is located - the speaker was from OSU - Stillwater.

Also, you can buy a cheap kit to convert other types of barrels and even trash cans into rain barrels.

I don't remember seeing any at the Del City Walmart on 15th and Sooner.

The biggest problem with rain barrels is that it needs to rain.
Most are to high priced and hold to little water to make economic sense.

There are some good youtube video on how to make your own or you can use old wine barrels. If you plan to use it for emergency drinking water you'll need to get one approved for that use. Depending on how much water you want to store you might look into cisterns.

Just make sure you leave enough room at the bottom to actually put the hose on.

Maybe this is a case of "if you build them--or buy them" it will come" . . .
(hope so)

If that’s true, I better go get started on my own.

A barrel or two is probably fine, but don't go overboard with the scale of your rainwater collection. http://cnsnews.com/news/article/oregon-man-sentenced-30-days-jail-collecting-rainwater-his-property

(CNSNews.com) – A rural Oregon man was sentenced Wednesday to 30 days in jail and over $1,500 in fines because he had three reservoirs on his property to collect and use rainwater.

Gary Harrington of Eagle Point, Ore., says he plans to appeal his conviction in Jackson County (Ore.) Circuit Court on nine misdemeanor charges under a 1925 law for having what state water managers called “three illegal reservoirs” on his property – and for filling the reservoirs with rainwater and snow runoff.

You keep calling that the "Del City WalMart" but on the WalMart website and on a general search it shows that is an Oklahoma City address. I figured that was MWC or Del City.

I saw some in a Tuesday morning store not long ago. I cannot recall if it was Edmond or in TX though. Still might be worth looking. I bought my rain barrel from Home Depot.

Wow! You guys are great! Thanks for the answers. I've got a couple of downspouts where I could divert water into a barrel to provide water for plants in areas where I don't have easy access to a hose. If I get it done, I'll post sme pics.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the idea - We are planning to put gutters on our barn and perhaps a water barrel might be a good idea. I wish I'd thought of that when we added gutters to the main house but we put in drains that go underground. Seems a bit of a waste, now that I think of it.

Oh, and they have an Atwoods in Chickasha.

You would be surprised how many thouands of gallons an average sized roof can collect and how fast. A 1/2 inch of rain on 1 sq foot is a 1/2 gallon of water. 2 inches of rain on 1500 sq feet is 3,000 gallons.

I know someone in Mesta Park whose entire backyard is mostly decorative rock with concrete slabs for a kitchen and gathering space. All the water that hits the rocks is collected under them and gravity fed to the front yard where it waters all the grass and shrubs - very cool.

The 15th and Sooner Walmart is in the Del City city limits. The one at 23rd and Douglas is in the MWC city limits.

That's what I always assumed, but.....

Walmart website lists the address as Oklahoma City (Walmart Supercenter - 5401 Tinker Diagonal St - Oklahoma City, OK 73115)

Yellowpages.com also considers it Oklahoma City..... http://www.yellowpages.com/oklahoma-city-ok/mip/walmart-supercenter-4348653?lid=4348653

What is the monetary value of a barrels worth of rain water?

It seems like it would take many thousands of barrels full of rain water to make this pay off all for a very limited supply of water.

Typical rain barrel = a feel good scam.
The buyer feels good about saving a few drops of water. The seller feels good about taking your money.

It goes beyond 'the actual cost of the water' and at 600 gallons of water collected from 1,000 square feet per inch of rain, it is a measurable $$$$ savings over time.

1.) Conserves water during peak usage times.
2.) Provides unchlorinated water for your plants and garden.
3.) Helps control moisture/water levels around your homes foundation.
4.) Residential flood control.
5.) Helps to limited burden on storm/sewer drains and is added runoff protection for rivers and streams.
6.) Warm fuzzy feelings are not to be under-estimated.

I know a few people who use their specifically for drip irrigation systems on their plants and they work really well.

It depends on what you are using the water for and other factors. I live in a place where the public water supply could be suspended for several days or longer. At that point it isn't about cost - it is about 'have' or 'have not'.

My parents live in Texas and in their city you can sign up and the city will give you rain barrel, then they will take a percentage off your water bill.

I hear you. I grew up in MWC and always thought anything north of 23rd was Spencer. As far as their mailing addresses, we have several OKC fire stations that have mailing addresses of other towns. One has a Mustang address and one has a Newalla address. Not sure but the new one on Hogback Rd. probably has a Jones or Luther address. Never made sense to me.

Back to topic, anything that recycles water or anything else for that matter, is a good thing.

To me - the type of barrel would come down to a couple of considerations.... If I had kids in the house then I'd strongly consider a 'kit' to convert an existing item (trash can, barrel, etc.) and make it with my kids. I'm always amazed at how little projects like that stick in a kid's memory forever. Make it solid enough and they'll probably treasure it and never want to see it gotten rid of, because you made it together.
