View Full Version : Triple AAA Root Beer
ljbab728 07-03-2012, 11:51 PM Steve's article about the return of an iconic Oklahoma brand to Bricktown and OKC.

I have to disagree with one statement in the article though.
Like most kids growing up in the 1950s, Oliver did not get to enjoy soda pop at home; such drinks were rare special treats.
I was a kid growing up in the 1950s. Soda pop wasn't as prevelent then as now but we did have it at home and it was never a rare special treat.
Jim Kyle 07-04-2012, 09:30 AM Gotta agree. I graduated from high school in 1948 and we always had a full case, 24 bottles, of Royal Crown Cola on the back porch next to the refrigerator and several of its bottles cooling off inside. My dad would buy it direct from the bottling works, which was down near the Farmers' Market as I recall. One case would last for several weeks...
BlackmoreRulz 07-04-2012, 09:58 AM Oliver remembers the Triple AAA Root Beer Thirst Stands were the “Sonics” of their era and spanned several states.
I remember the one mentioned in the article at 13th & Broadway, and another that was on SW 44th just west of Blackwelder that later became Los Tacos. How many were there? Seems like there was one on 23rd st also.
MustangGT 07-04-2012, 12:02 PM Tough market to get into. Most dedicated RB drinkers are VERY brand specific. Best of luck to him.
ctchandler 07-04-2012, 12:27 PM BlackmoreRuiz,
I'm not sure, but wasn't the Weber's/Coit's on about 11th and N. Penn a AAA place for a while?

Larry OKC 07-04-2012, 08:16 PM I was born in '63 and soda at home was not an every day thing. Neither was eating out. Even McDonalds was a once a month thing if we went that often. About the only time I got soda with dinner was when we ate out and sometimes as a special treat when we went shopping.
boscorama 07-04-2012, 09:23 PM "Soda pop" was a regular at my house, but mainly at lunch. Remember Tab, ewwww, that stuff never tasted good. Aside from that, store brands ruled. Man, we suffered some bad stuff; remember Fizzies?

RC Cola brings back memories of my youth also. My favorite snack was an RC with a Baby Ruth.
RadicalModerate 07-04-2012, 11:50 PM 1) DoubleCola kicked RC Cola's butt and didn't even scoff in the general direction of PepsiCola or CocaCola.
2) Would Triple AAA Root Beer be the same as 9A Root Beer? A-Cubed Root Beer?
3) The best Root Beer I've ever had was:
http://www.pointbeer.com/wp-content/files_mf/root_top.png
Even their caps are cool . . .
http://www.rachelleb.com/images/2008/09/point_brewery_caps.jpg
Their slogan should be: "What's YOUR Point?" (but they would probably encounter the wrath of that credit card ad agency's legal team)
P.S.: The original Tab sucked beyond words.
Even worse than the original Fresca.
Both of those made "Fizzies" or even plain ol' homemade Kool-Ade taste like heaven.
ctchandler 07-05-2012, 03:11 PM p.s. What about Wink?

kevinpate 07-05-2012, 07:11 PM RC Cola and a moonpie
Coke and a moonpie
Dr. Pepper and a moonpie
Mr. Pibb and a moonpie
Big Red and Ding Dongs
Hey, boys do not live by moonpies alone.
Tab, warm with a bit of lemon and a big dose of sugar stirred into it. Then make sure momma dinna get your glass by mistake cause she wasn't drinking Tab for the fun of it.

Yes, C.T., it was. This came up some time back when discussing Webers and somebody looked it up and it was definitely a Triple AAA. Good old days.
RadicalModerate 07-05-2012, 07:41 PM p.s. What about Wink?
C. T.
If the thought of Wink leaves a bad taste in your mouth, you are probably thinking of Diet Winkinstead of Normal Wink.
(it's that goddawful saccharin blech back bite. the one Tab was so famous for. like carbonated, no calorie embalming fluid)
Regular Wink ain't bad . . . It's "The Sassy One", you know . . . and from the dry part of Canada.
boscorama 07-05-2012, 09:36 PM Diet-Rite, wasn't that the house brand of the day?
Speaking of root beer, I recently bought Round Barn Root Beer at Pops. Man oh man, and wow! Beats Diet Shasta big time!
ctchandler 07-05-2012, 09:51 PM RadicalModerate,
My late wife wasn't much for alcohol, but Southern Comfort and Wink was one she liked.

RadicalModerate 07-07-2012, 11:53 PM I can understand how "Southern Comfort" would be too sweet by itself.
(in fact, so sweet that it is nearly unpalatable)
Cutting it with some good Canada Dry "Wink" or "Ginger Ale" would provide some balance.
"Irish Mist" or "Drambuie" is the same way. Isn't it? =)
Your lovely wife was most certainly a wonderful woman with a lot of class and good taste to match.
(And I mean that honestly and sincerely....within the limitations of this means of communication.)
BTW:
The first Mint Julip (non-authentic) I ever tasted was prepared with a simple syrup, etc. and Southern Comfort.
Point Root Beer is just about that good in a different context.
I hope Triple AAA is even better.
ctchandler 07-08-2012, 03:31 PM RadicalModerate,
Thanks for the kind remark about Dianna. As for Southern Comfort, I can't stand it. It is very popular in England. It's always up front at their pubs with Jack Daniels and other good spirits.
Did AAA have the frosted mugs like Coit's? I always thought that was a nice touch.

There were a bunch and I am finding out about more and more locations. Del City had one across from the high school that is now a car wash. 15th and classen, 23rd and lottie, and is that south Penn Coits or Coits in Capital Hill?
John1744 07-21-2012, 10:16 PM Speaking of root beer, what's the best root beer you guys tend to be able to find in OKC? It might be nostalgia but man the Coit's root beer in a frosted mug was heaven as a kid.

Have you had it in recent years? Nothing to brag about.
John1744 07-21-2012, 10:58 PM No and I love a good sweet root beer, I'd love some recommendations. I know Pops has some nice selections.
Cocaine 07-28-2012, 05:21 AM Virgil's Root Beer is one of the best I've ever had.
