View Full Version : The Newsroom on HBO Tydude 06-26-2012, 10:09 PM I watch the series premier of the newsroom last sunday Night and it was pretty good even thought the creator of it created The West Wing and its better then West Wing and i am excited to see the next episode Easy180 06-27-2012, 04:07 AM Might not get too interested as I believe the ratings were terrible...HBO used to run out hit series one after another but has been in a funk for a while now BadBear 06-27-2012, 06:15 AM Finally got around to watching the premier last night and I really enjoyed it. I remember Steve was complaining on twitter Sunday night about how unrealistic/exaggerated the show was, and if that is true, I've decided I'm okay with that. I have a feeling your basic, everyday newsroom, is quite boring. It would probably make awful television. I have no illusions that this will be the next Wire, but hopefully this show will find some common ground between the ridiculousness of True Blood and the realism/rawness of The Wire. Count me in. BBatesokc 06-27-2012, 06:26 AM Finally got around to watching the premier last night and I really enjoyed it. I remember Steve was complaining on twitter Sunday night about how unrealistic/exaggerated the show was.... What? Does that mean The Office, Taxi, CSI, Law&Order, are virtually EVERYTHING on TV are actually unrealistic and exaggerate....... say it isn't so. HewenttoJared 06-27-2012, 07:17 AM Might not get too interested as I believe the ratings were terrible...HBO used to run out hit series one after another but has been in a funk for a while now Say what? Game of Thrones.. venture 06-27-2012, 08:17 AM Say what? Game of Thrones.. I was about to say. I know Season 1 of Game of Thrones was a little shaky (if I remember right), but Season 2 performed much better. The show averaged 10.2M viewers per episode for Season 2 which is pretty good for a premium channel series. kevinpate 06-27-2012, 09:30 AM also t-blood, boardwalk, and before its sadly too early demise ..carnivale . never really got entourage, but some friends loved it BadBear 06-27-2012, 11:05 AM What? Does that mean The Office, Taxi, CSI, Law&Order, are virtually EVERYTHING on TV are actually unrealistic and exaggerate....... say it isn't so. Yes... the list of unrealistic and exaggerated shows is too numerous to list, next you are going to tell me Modern Family isn't a documentary. There are shows out there however, many of which are from HBO, that pride themselves on introducing us to subset of our world that we might never have had a chance to experience otherwise. Shows like the Wire and Treme. I am by no means suggesting that these shows are documentaries or don't exaggerate or take creative liberties, because of course they do, but they do take pride in creating a realistic experience for the viewer. The realism of the drug ridden streets of Baltimore, stories of the dock workers, the police department, and the inner-city schools of Baltimore is what made The Wire so freaking great. All I was implying was that there are different types of shows, and it appeared to me that Steve was looking for a serious and realistic look inside of a newsroom. So if you, or anyone else, are looking for the same, you will be disappointed. Easy180 06-27-2012, 11:39 AM Say what? Game of Thrones.. One show? BadBear 06-27-2012, 11:59 AM One show? Treme, Boardwalk, Girls, VEEP HewenttoJared 06-27-2012, 12:54 PM One show? Veep is up there with 30-Rock IMO. And true blood has fans... MikeOKC 06-27-2012, 01:58 PM HBO is still kicking their butts for passing on Mad Men, which has accumulated 15 Emmy awards and turned AMC into a player, at the expense of - yep - HBO. venture 07-07-2012, 12:20 AM Finally got around to watching the first two episodes and I really enjoyed it. The opening rant by Will towards the college girl was pretty amazing and spot on to reality. It is sad that people in the real world don't talk like that in the open. I watch the series premier of the newsroom last sunday Night and it was pretty good even thought the creator of it created The West Wing and its better then West Wing and i am excited to see the next episode Why would it being done by Aaron Sorkin be a bad thing? West Wing was pretty amazing and I loved it. I still don't rate Newsroom ahead of WW, but it's only on he 3rd episode this week. Lord Helmet 07-17-2012, 09:12 AM Sorkin's writing is always good...especially with regard to dialog. It's always really snappy and back and forth. Really enjoying this show so far. Gets better every week. Jeff Daniels has been really good IMHO. kevinpate 07-17-2012, 09:42 AM Could have done without the bigfoot sideshow story last night. The rest of it to date hasn't been bad at all. Lord Helmet 07-17-2012, 10:11 AM Could have done without the bigfoot sideshow story last night. The rest of it to date hasn't been bad at all. Yeah where did the bigfoot stuff come from lol... OKCTalker 07-17-2012, 10:13 AM I heard a radio interview yesterday in which an audio clip was played of Charlie Skinner (played by Sam Waterston) describing a hurricane being caused by high pressure. It's actually LOW pressure, and I was disappointed that they got such a simple fact wrong. In the days of The West Wing, there was a Web site called West Wing Watch, and every episode would be dissected by anonymous Washington insiders who knew everything from policy to law to Secret Service details to whether cellphone calls could be blocked in the White House. They'll KILL this show if it's full of mistakes. I'm not being critical, but it may be that this isn't Sorkin's best work. venture 07-17-2012, 06:22 PM I heard a radio interview yesterday in which an audio clip was played of Charlie Skinner (played by Sam Waterston) describing a hurricane being caused by high pressure. It's actually LOW pressure, and I was disappointed that they got such a simple fact wrong. Well I'm going to get picky here. LOL Actually yes the surface center or the storm itself is a low pressure system. However, in order for a tropical system to really intensify and continue to live, it needs a high pressure right over it in order to vent out the cloud tops. This also tends to protect the storm from being sheared to death. All in all...still love the show. Hopefully it keeps up. I just wish we had an actual news anchor like him to keep things real in the media. Spartan 07-18-2012, 01:35 PM I saw the pilot on iTunes, but I'm curious if there's anyway to watch it without HBO. This year I'm doing gyms instead of cable lol.. still I hope that doesn't mean I have to miss this show. :( Lord Helmet 07-18-2012, 03:18 PM I saw the pilot on iTunes, but I'm curious if there's anyway to watch it without HBO. FritterGirl 07-18-2012, 03:51 PM I'm going to have to wait and catch this when it comes out on DVR. We got rid of our HBO, sadly. Really don't miss it too much except for times like these. My favorite show EVER was the David Milch scribed "Deadwood." Nothing, and I mean NOTHING could beat that show for storytelling and dialog. Pure genius. Shakespeare meets the Old West, and Ian McShane was the perfect Al Swearingen. kevinpate 07-18-2012, 05:27 PM We rarely ever visit a theater any more. Once you get past the you need to see something before everyone else does phase in life, theater prices just seem silly. HBO however, which now comes with HBOGO as well, makes a whole lot of sense as inexpensive entertainment. I dumped other pay channels long ago, and almost dumped HBO when Carnivale went away. Glad now I didn't. The HBO programming alone is more than worth the minimum expense involved. The option of seeing movies I skipped in the past is just a lot of extra gravy on the biscuit. |
