I hope I don't hurt anyone's feelings, but I personally don't trust, and probably don't like, people who would pay Starbucks' prices for a plain, not even toasted, multigrain bagel. That is someone with more money than sense. And when Starbucks is through with her, no sense and no money. And they didn't mention if she got something to wash it down. Eating a plain bagel without something to wash it down is asking for trouble. I just hope she carries floss.

I only order Cafe Americano and don't care for their regular coffees or
fru fru drinks.

Did she clearly order a plain bagel? The articles are unclear on specifically how the transaction transpired. From I can gleam, based on what little the articles provide along with the professor's agenda, I figure the lady just asked for a "multigrain bagel." She didn't specify plain for the same reason that she refused to specify she didn't want the butter or the cheese: she feels a "multigrain bagel" should be just a multigrain bagel and you should have to specify that you want cheese (or whatever) not that you don't want it.

So, if she did indeed ask for a "multigrain bagel" and not a "plain multigrain bagel" I think its entirely reasonable for the cashier to ask "do you want such and such" on it. In this case, the cashier was trying to be helpful and ensure the lady got exactly what she wanted, but instead the professor decided to push an agenda rather than just order a bagel.

If, however, she did, in fact, ask for a "plain multigrain bagel," then that's different.

Yeah, that menu does the opposite of making things more clear. Now were entering into Starbucks culture where they think each variation of a bagel is special enough to get its own unique name which pushes further burden of speaking clearly onto the customer. Lol

McD has the McRibs back now!!!

I go up there and say plain McRib. Their computer order machine is smart enough to understand and instruct the low-wage employees. When I say to add cheese...I feel ripped off, cuz they charge me for cheese while I don't take any pickles and onions.

The three most frightening words in the English language:
"McRib Is Back"

The second three most frightening words in the English language:
"McRib with cheese."

Amen. Employees are expected to tolerate the customers and do as they request as long its reasonable. Handing over the plain bagel was reasonable. But hell no, Starbucks wanted 25 cents extra for butter and 25 cents extra for cream.

*this* is the critical issue - they're eager to charge you on the upsell for the things you don't want.

She could have handled the situation much more tactfully if, in response to the request for cheese or butter, she had merely said, "Did I ask for them?"

You don't have to worry about this at Sonic (among others) because (at least for now) they don't charge extra for mayo, ketchup, or mustard. But that 30-cent-per-slice cheese (or whatever it is today) is a huge profit maker for them, so you BET they'll upsell it hard.

I must admit I hate when I'm asked if I want stuff I didn't ask for. I go to the drive through at McD's or wherever, and they try to upsell a stinking apple pie or shake. I want to punch the speaker. But I solved the problem by learning always to end my order with "and that's all I want." Solves about 80% of the problem.

The opposite extreme of this person's issue is when you go to a drive through and order (as an example) a burger with, say, extra ketchup, and you end up with a burger having ONLY extra ketchup. AAAAAAEEEEEEIIIIEIIERRRRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!

Whatever it is, it isn't sweet.

To much to go back and quote all the tea talk, but here is the problem with the professor and I am 100% sure she went in there to make a point (probably as some part of a research attempt for something she was writing)

When you order tea you assume it will be an unsweetened cold liquid. Tea is not a liquid, it is a plant so would you be shocked if the waitress brought you a glass of leaves? How about if came hot? What if came pre-sweetned? The answer is - it depends on where you are because all 3 of those could happen. It just happens that at Starbucks "plain bagle" includes butter or cheese. If you don't want butter or cheese you have to tell them.

When I was kid I used to go to a place called Big Als and order a plain hamburger. It had bread and meat - that is all and nothing else. Then we got a McDonalds and I remember ordering a plain hamburger and it came with ketchup and a pickle. My grandfather went with me to take it back and we were told that is a plain hamburger. My youngest son doesn't like anything on his hamburger so to this day if I want a "plain hamburger" from McDonalds I always say "plain hamburger - just meat and bread."

Do you mean before the sky actually falls?
Or do you mean before the sky metaphorically falls?
Use of the word "really," in this context, confuses and clouds the issue.

Much like putting butter and/or cheese on a "plain" bagel.

Starbucks will be employing 10,000 veterans and military spouses over

Defense Secretary Robert Gates was elected to the Starbucks Board of
Directors in 2012. "This demographic represents one of the most
underutilized talent pools in our country," Gates said.

Well let's see, thanks to a tax credit passed by Congress on Jan 1, 2013 Starbucks will be pocketing at least $5600 per new hire. If the Vet is long-term unemployed or disabled it goes to $9,600. So Starbucks could pocket $96,000,000 in taxpayer money, and this whole time I thought Howard Schultz was a liberal.

Orion International (http://www.orioninternational.com/employers_TaxCreditsHiringVeterans.aspx)

Receive a Tax Credit of up to $9600 for Every Eligible Veteran Hired

How can your organization claim a tax credit for hiring veterans?
On January 1, 2013, Congress passed a bill that extended the Returning Heroes and Wounded Warrior Tax Credits through December 31, 2013. The Returning Heroes Tax Credit provides incentives of up to $5,600 for hiring unemployed veterans, and the Wounded Warriors Tax Credit doubles the existing Work Opportunity Tax Credit for long-term unemployed veterans with service-connected disabilities, to up to $9,600. There is no limit to the number of qualified veterans for whom you can claim this credit.

Who is an eligible veteran?
Returning Heroes Tax Credit

•Short-term Unemployed: A new credit of 40% of the first $6,000 of wages (up to $2,400) for employers who hire veterans who have been in receipt of unemployment insurance or compensation for at least 4 weeks.

•Long-term Unemployed: A new credit of 40% of the first $14,000 of wages (up to $5,600) for employers who hire veterans who have been in receipt of unemployment insurance or compensation for longer than 6 months.
Wounded Warrior Tax Credit

•Veterans with Services-Connected Disabilities: Maintains the existing Work Opportunity Tax Credit for veterans with service-connected disabilities hired within one year of being discharged from the military. The credit is 40% of the first $12,000 of wages (up to $4,800).

•Long-Term Unemployed Veterans with Services-Connected Disabilities: A new credit of 40% of the first $24,000 of wages (up to $9,600) for firms that hire veterans with service-connected disabilities who have been in receipt of unemployment insurance or compensation for longer than 6 months.

Meanwhile, back at the farm 10,000 non-veterans just found out they were second-class citizens.

I'll have to ask John next time I'm over there. I always get Guatemalan Antigua whole bean. The smell of grinding (burr grinder only) right before you make it is a double blessing. Starts any day off pretty good.

I agree; I'd prefer that if anything, e government spend the money preparing veterans better to leave the service. When I got out, they had a program, but it was pretty mediocre and you really had to harass the chain of command to attend it.

Oh the irony seeing as how the military recruits teenagers promising them that they will learn valuable job skills that are in demand in the private sector. I was in the Army 6 years and I have yet to see how my MOS (31U) is even applicable in the private sector.
