Pete 07-11-2018, 05:20 PM And they just posted this: http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/irmas071118.jpg TheTravellers 07-11-2018, 05:22 PM Irma's twitter account just said the Midtown location is closing as well in a response to Steve Lackmeyer. Man, that totally sucks now. In addition to their burgers being great, their onion rings are the best around, like Johnnie's used to be decades ago, and their bacon was better than anybody else - crispy and chewy and thick in all the right proportions, best theta sauce too. Guess it's gonna be S&B from now on, until I try Nic's and Lip Smackers to see where they stand. Oh well, they had a good run, guess they got tired of the fight.... ctchandler 07-11-2018, 09:48 PM Not Rib Crib. This was before there was a Rib Crib (which was actually a pizza company at the time, I think). The Rib Crib was at Britton and May if I remember correctly. The owner of this BBQ spot moved to Pink and closed up here. Pink was closer to where he went fishing. :) He was a persnikity man who made BBQ right and if you didn't like it you could leave. He might not open up if it was a good fishing day. He always ran out of ribs but made maybe the best steak in town. Oh...the good ole days. I worked at OKlahoma Monthly Magazine at the time and we ran a "10 Best BBQ Joints In OK" cover feature every year. I was a sidekick to the writer for this article. :) This one was always on it. Beasly's Barbecue, excellent chopped beef sandwiches and ribs and he was the only place in town that ran out of food and shut the doors. He moved to Pink for a few years then came back and opened a new barbecue place where the Shack is located. He did a lot of the construction himself. He was open six months then cancer got him. He was a cleanliness freak although looking at the gunny sack curtains and all of the junk hanging on the walls you would never know it but he never was hit by the health inspections and they specifically mentioned how fanatical he was about keeping it clean in an article in the Daily Oklahoman. His sauce was really good and is right up there with Leo's, Han's, and Pulliam's, the one that was in his garage with chairs around the walls and newspaper for tablecloths. C. T. ctchandler 07-11-2018, 09:50 PM So back around statehood? ;) I wonder if it was the guy that had the BBQ shack out near Thunderbird in a red shed? We mowed a lot of yards in that area when I was a kid but I really don't remember what else was in that building before Rib Crib's stint in it in the late 90's early aughts. Beasly's opened sometime in the 70's. I discovered it in 1973 and it was one of my favorites. C. T. Rover 07-11-2018, 10:06 PM Beasly's opened sometime in the 70's. I discovered it in 1973 and it was one of my favorites. C. T. Thanks. That was it. He had some of the hottest spice ever. And if you ever asked for a steak more well done than medium rare he was all in your face. Lol. Roger S 07-12-2018, 08:40 AM Beasly's opened sometime in the 70's. I discovered it in 1973 and it was one of my favorites. That would explain why I don't remember it... Didn't move here until 78. Martin 07-12-2018, 09:23 AM i'm gonna miss irma's... there are plenty of good burger options in okc but if i had to pick a 'favorite' it'd be them. i have no actual proof, but i also have to think that the owners have other plans for this piece of real estate and so the building on western isn't long for this world... that place has a ton of character and it will probably be replaced by some cookie cutter structure. Agree, they're our favorites, just something about the atmosphere. I'd imagine that since Bank7 owns the land, and since someone said they're expanding, they'll tear it down (along with that little retail strip) for parking or another office building. ctchandler 07-12-2018, 09:42 AM Thanks. That was it. He had some of the hottest spice ever. And if you ever asked for a steak more well done than medium rare he was all in your face. Lol. Rover, He offered mild, medium, and hot. That was on the menu, but he had extra hot if you asked for it (and I did). I usually bought two chopped (real chopped with chunks of brisket, not ground or chopped into tiny bits of meat) beef sandwiches, one hot and one extra hot. That was in case his extra hot was hotter than normal (yes, it varied) and I had a hot sandwich to chase it with. All of his sauces had great flavor. I didn't normally use it on the ribs but I loved it on the sandwiches. His name was Ken Beasley (Just noticed his name is spelled Beasley) and his uncle was Jack Beasley who was a well known radio dj and executive. He dj'd on KLPR and a few others. Some of the folks in my age range should remember him. C. T. Rover 07-12-2018, 11:39 AM I remember taking one of my macho friends to Beasley and he insisted Ken's hot wasn't all that hot. Ken reappeared with his "special" hot sauce for him. My friend litterally left with tears running down his cheeks. LOL. Thanks for leading me down memory lane. OKCbyTRANSFER 07-12-2018, 08:28 PM FYI, the Midtown location is only open for lunch, 11-3 Monday to Saturday. Went this evening with some friends and it was closed. SoonerDave 07-14-2018, 04:50 AM FYI, the Midtown location is only open for lunch, 11-3 Monday to Saturday. Went this evening with some friends and it was closed. Yeah, same here. After navigating the maze of torn up streets to get there, we walk up only to realize it was no longer open for dinner. We gave up and headed to a place closer to home. bradh 07-14-2018, 10:24 AM Man this sucks, Irma's was our favorite when we lived there, and Minneapolis sucks for burgers. TheTravellers 07-25-2018, 01:31 PM Last day for Irma's on 63rd is Aug 15. The old Hideaway would make a nice place for them to go into (probably too big, though)... Pete 07-27-2018, 01:00 PM Midtown location closes for good today at 3PM. They had planned to leave earlier then extended their lease a few times before deciding to close down for good. The last day for the 63rd Street location is 8/15, as Travellers said above. At this time they are not planning to reopen anywhere. KFOR will have a story on the evening news tonight where they interviewed the owner about all this. Zuplar 07-27-2018, 02:49 PM I guess I missed that the Midtown one was going away as well. Sucks because this was my favorite burger joint, and really the only reason I ever went to Midtown. silvergrove 08-15-2018, 03:52 AM Last day for Irma's. GoThunder 10-25-2018, 12:20 PM Irma’s at 63/Western has been razed. David 10-25-2018, 01:07 PM I went exactly once, so I feel like this is my fault. Clearly I should have gone either one time less to avoid the curse or much, much more to help fight it. thunderbird 10-25-2018, 01:12 PM 14974 TheTravellers 10-25-2018, 04:06 PM I went exactly once, so I feel like this is my fault. Clearly I should have gone either one time less to avoid the curse or much, much more to help fight it. Ha... It was actually kind of a perfect storm - Bank7 ending their lease early, business down at their 10th St. location, tons of other burger joints popping up in the last few years that are more popular then them (even if they're not as good, IMO), and possibly the owners/operators doing it for 15-16 years and being tired of it and maybe wanting to do something new (eventually I'll get curious and check on what the owners/operators are doing, be interesting if they get back into burgers). Can't wait for the completely bland character-less office building (or even better, parking lot) that Bank7 is going to put in its place...... |
