Hawk405359 05-06-2013, 10:54 PM Next to peach cobbler with some raspberries on top I think bread pudding may be my favorite dessert.
(and 50th and Lincoln ain't all that far away . . . I think BBQ there may be on tap for Wednesday lunch . . .)
If you're ever down in Dallas and have a few extra (ok, a lot of extra) dollars burning a hole in your pocket, Rise N1 has the best rendition I ever had. Of course, it's not a cheap place, better to make an evening of it with someone you're trying to impress.
BBatesokc 05-07-2013, 06:49 PM I tried it about 4 years ago, before I started the blog, and it was good then. I did think it was a little pricey but they were really busy for lunch the day I was there.
I think I'll try and hit them up this month and get a blog posted for them.
Please do, and I agree it is on the upper end of my lunch budget for such fare. However, that is probably a good thing - if it was cheaper the lines would be longer and my visits would be more frequent and that's not good on my waistline!
ctchandler 08-29-2013, 12:13 PM Well, I took my friend from London to Davis to try Smokin' Joes yesterday, and they are closed on Wednesdays! Fortunately, that wasn't the only reason we went South, but next time I will know. They don't have a web page so I didn't know they were closed.

Larry OKC 08-29-2013, 05:26 PM I had tried Billy Sim's a couple of times but wasn't overly impressed. My mother on the other hand goes there at least once a week to get their Frito Chili Pie (made with brisket). A new location opened near the NW 23rd & Penn intersection and they had an all-you-can-eat rib special (Tuesday). These were some of the best ribs I have eaten in a long time. They were only 2nd to the ribs I had years ago at Corky's in Memphis. Tender, juicy, fall of the bone (I know that is heresy for some), excellently seasoned/flavored...so well done, I didn't even need any kind of sauce on them (although I did try some of the sauce on the 3rd or was it the 4th reorder just to see)...all of the sides I sampled were "C" to "A". I don't normally get ribs because it is hard for them to be consistent from one visit to the next (like brisket), so I may be disappointed the next time I go.
td25er 08-30-2013, 11:00 AM I like Steve's Rib in Edmond.
Larry OKC 09-04-2013, 05:15 PM Steve's Rib used to be great but has gone waaaaay downhill the past 3 times I went (service & food quality)...on a positive note, went to Billy Sim's @ 23rd & Penn again Tuesday night for the all-u-can-eat ribs and there were just as good as the week before. They also added a couple of new sides...Mac & Cheese (solid A) & something they called "Loaded Potato Salad" (potatoe, sour cream(?), bacon bits)...not really sure about it, may be an acquired taste but it was new/different.
WilliamTell 09-08-2013, 04:32 AM Had Leos yesterday. It was the best BBQ that I've had in years.
Excellent ribs that didn't need any sauce, great chopped beef that wasn't dry, excellent Bologna and hot links. I'm a huge fan of mountain view hotlinks that are made in OK and served at alot of Tulsa are BBQ joints but these were good too.
Some of the best Mac salad I've had in years (typically hate it) and the beans were good, but I've had better beans at other places.
CaptDave 09-08-2013, 10:22 AM ^ Great to hear. It is still one of my favorite places. Need to go have a smoky lunch soon.
ctchandler 09-08-2013, 03:19 PM WilliamTell,
In the OKC barbecue "heyday", the 60's-80's Leo's was right in there with Tom's Oaklawn, Pulliams, Han's, Georges (at about 63rd and Eastern) and others who's names escape me. At the original location, 36th and Kelley, I used to come out of Leo's with tears in my eyes because his air circulation was non-existent and proved the song "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes". I never cared for the mac salad and it always irritated me that there was "no substitution" on his lunch meals. His Hot sauce would blow you away, I always mixed it with the mild. I need to give the current restaurant a try.

CaptDave 09-08-2013, 03:23 PM CT - the original location at 36th and Kelley is the one that is open now. The one on 4th Street is closed (and sold I think.) I mix the sauces too and love coming out of there smelling like smoke for the rest of the day.
bluedogok 09-08-2013, 03:25 PM You can substitute the sides at Leo's now.
ctchandler 09-08-2013, 05:00 PM CaptDave,
Thanks, that's good to hear. It's a little more convenient for me now that I'm retired.

ctchandler 09-08-2013, 05:02 PM BlueDogok,
More good information. I always wanted to have beans and fries but the chopped beef plate was beans and mac salad.

Garin 02-01-2014, 06:56 PM Took the two youngest to Leo's for lunch today and as always it did not disappoint. One on my favorite places in this whole state.
blangtang 02-11-2014, 11:40 PM The Buy for Less on 23rd and N Penn, there is a little smoker shack out in the parking lot.
I don't know the name of it, but from what I can tell its one of those places that sells its inventory for the day, then closes shop.
I've looked at the menu in the store- ribs, brisket , hot links and some chicken - no sides, just meat!
I'd like to hear a review if anyone's tried it.
It's called JC's.
The one review on Yelp is very positive:

Roger S 02-12-2014, 09:01 AM I've had JC's on my radar for awhile but since they aren't open during the week it has made it difficult for me to get over there and try it.
Roger S 02-13-2014, 10:59 AM Some of the best in OKC right now is coming from Kosmo's BBQ (http://okbbqea.blogspot.com/2014/01/snapshot-kosmos-bbq-01-24-14-01-29-14.html). Right now they are vending from a trailer and parking either at SW 44th and Council or at the Sherwin William's at I-40 and Mustang Road.
Kosmo's is a competition cook and also has a business selling competition rubs. marinades, and injections. They are mostly serving sandwiches right now but plan to expand their menu. I'm really not a BBQ sandwich type of person but these have me hooked.

That is out my neck of woods so will have to give it a try. Do you also post on either the hastybake or cookshack forums?

Neither of those... I have made a few posts on the Virtual Weber Bullet forums and spent a lot of time on The Smoke Ring over the years but don't post there much anymore since I focus most of my time on my FB page and my blog.

Do you mind divulging your FB page? is it also OK BBQ Eaters Anonymous?
Garin 02-18-2014, 06:43 PM Went by Railhead BBQ today in Guthrie/Edmond and it was rather tasty had pulled pork ,ribs, bbq beans, and potato wedges. It took forever to get the food but what we got was delicious. I will definitely go back if I'm in the area again.
ctchandler 02-18-2014, 10:49 PM My friend from London is here and her favorite American food is barbecue. I'm on oxygen so I can't go anywhere over night so where in Oklahoma would you folks recommend for que? Davis, Tulsa, Poteau (Wild Horse I think)? I love good brisket and good ribs. I could read the eleven pages of this thread, but things change, so hoping you will point me in the right direction. We are going to Tulsa in the next few days.
Thanks,

Burn Co BBQ (http://okbbqea.blogspot.com/2013/01/it-was-journey-to-burn-co-bbq.html) is the best in the state right now. They just moved into a larger location but still be prepared to stand in a line. Yes I said stand in line. They are the only Q-raunt in Oklahoma that I know of a line forming before they open their doors.
Don't know if they are running out of meat as quickly as they did at their old location but don't wait to late to get there or you may not get what you want. They only make so much and when it's gone it is gone.

CT, Wild Horse is just outside Sallisaw, a few miles south on HWY 59 (named for its location at the base of Wild Horse Mountain) It's no longer on the main road as they built a four lane several years back about 70-100 yards to the north of the old highway. Little brother still pops in from time to time. Says it is still good, not Hubert good, but still good. We both have fond memories of chowing out and listening to Hubert's tales from our younger days. If memory serves, his sons or other kin have it now.
Locally, I like the Q served at Sooner Legends (SW 24th and Lindsey in Norman), followed by Van's (N porter in Norman), and Ray's (W Lindsey in Norman.) A friend swears by a place in Pauls Valley, north side of town on 77, name totally escapes me at the moment, sorry.
In OKC, I like Bubba's and Leo's.
Paseofreak 02-19-2014, 01:57 PM My goto place in the Metro is George's Happy Hog Barbecue on Culbertson, just a few blocks east of Lincoln. After George it went through a rough stretch with new owners for a year or so, but another ownership change has restored it's awesomeness. The lady that takes your order and money is an absolute riot!
Roger S 02-19-2014, 02:03 PM ... A friend swears by a place in Pauls Valley, north side of town on 77, name totally escapes me at the moment, sorry.
That would be Bob's Pig Shop.... They keep odd hours so I would call ahead before I ventured out there.
ctchandler 02-19-2014, 05:14 PM Great suggestions folks, Thanks. We are going to Tulsa for another reason so will probably try to get into Burn Co. I have always wondered about Wild Horse, I have driven past it several times visiting Poteau, and of course Leo's and if Bubba's is the one that was at 39th Expressway and Portland, it was pretty good. For some reason, I have never tried George's. I have taken my friend to Van's in Shawnee and we enjoyed it. Pauls Valley is a new one on me, we might make it there. And there were others mentioned.
Again, Thanks for the tips,
C. T.
Jersey Boss 02-19-2014, 05:33 PM I found a place in Broken Arrow on Kenosha right off the Creek Turnpike that calls me back when I am in that area. The name of the Q raunt is SMOKIE'S. They have a sandwich called the Razorback that is pork, bacon and their homemade Atomic Slaw. I also have enjoyed their ribs and chicken. The chicken has been moist every time I ordered it. The establishment has great décor and they even have a back porch with an occasional band at night. I give it two thumbs up and am curious as to whether or not OBEA has had a chance to sample them yet.
boscorama 02-19-2014, 09:25 PM I finally made it back to George's after a year or so. Ordered a chopped beef sandwich, which was ridden with much extra fat. It was like buying pot, watching the seller add stems and seeds for weight. I removed so much fat, probably a quarter of the sandwich. BUMMER! Next time, I got a "chicken quarter", the breast of which was great but the wing was pretty worthless, being a wing. Beans were still very good.

LOL! We must have had the same dealer. Stems and seeds were a problem
when looking for a quality product. I never thought about it as being
equated with food.
Roger S 03-02-2014, 07:58 PM If anyone is interested in some light reading. Myself and two brave volunteers sampled slabs of ribs at 15 different OKC area Q-raunts over 4 Saturdays. We dubbed it the 2014 Broken Rib Tour (http://okbbqea.blogspot.com/2014/03/2014-oklahoma-city-broken-rib-tour.html)
Jeepnokc 03-02-2014, 08:30 PM Great blog OKBBQ. I tried JC's Friday (Best Buy 23/Penn). Got the sampler which was basically chopped brisket, sliced brisket, ribs, hot links, ribs and polish. (The chopped may have been extra) Ribs were tasty and decent texture. The chopped was excellent. The sliced brisket needed some rub or seasoning...was a little bland but was moist and cooked well. The hot links were disappointing...store bought and really needed to smoke longer to bring our the heat. Better than average BBQ but wouldn't go out of the way for it.

Thanks and thanks for the heads up on JC's. We considered adding it to the tour yesterday but we were already pushing our limits eating 2 ribs from each slab in a two hour period. =+)
CuatrodeMayo 03-02-2014, 08:49 PM Awesome! I have some new Q-rants to try!
Garin 03-02-2014, 09:07 PM Jacks has been my favorite as of late for ribs, I also love his potatoes. Me and the boy had Rays yesterday for lunch and it was wall to wall and good as always. I've had ribs at everyone of the places on your list with exception of Simmons.
Garin 04-04-2014, 06:46 PM Vans in Moore opened back up ,think I'll go try it out tonight.

Same place?
Garin 04-04-2014, 08:18 PM Same place?
They moved to 19th and tower drive it's a new strip center, and it was packed we waited 25 mins after we ordered. It was worth the wait though pretty tasty.
Prunepicker 04-04-2014, 08:36 PM Has anyone tried Jack's BBQ on NW 39th Expressway lately? I'm going
to try and visit them this week. I liked their ribs but haven't been there in
quite a while. Same goes for Swadley's. The last time someone bought my
lunch there it wasn't nearly as bad as I remembered. They must be improving.
Ooops, I just noticed that Garin likes Jack's. I should have studied the

Do you live around NW 39th & Meridian?

they moved. Thanx. I might try them on Sunday, if they're opened.

Happy to hear they are open in Moore again. The number of Moore folks who were coming to Norman for their Van's fix, combined with the popularity of Van's locally, was at times overflowing the Norman location. Happy for their family.
bluedogok 04-05-2014, 11:25 AM I always liked the fried potatoes at Jack's and Oklahoma Station. When I lived in Mayfair West I frequented Oklahoma Station quite a bit for take home BBQ.

Sounds like I do need to try Jack's though.

Prunepicker 04-07-2014, 07:53 PM I like Leo's. Always have. I like the triple meat. Ribs, ribs and ribs. He

BlackmoreRulz 04-07-2014, 07:59 PM Kids brought me some Backdoor BBQ this last weekend, the baby back ribs were terrible, over cooked to the point of being pork jerky, hard and tasteless....the bologna was good though.

My dad ate at Leo's so often that Leo left him his bass boat in his will when he passed. They became good friends throughout the years and it all started over BBQ and fishing.I've always loved Leo's as well and try to get by as often as I can. Charles Leo's son is a pretty cool dude and still remembers his dad and mine spending many years telling fish stories. He never fells to ask how my pops is doing.
Garin 04-13-2014, 08:34 PM I've been to the salt lick in dripping springs Texas , does anyone know if the salt lick at Will Rogers airport is them same place?
bluedogok 04-13-2014, 09:07 PM It is a franchise of Salt Lick in Driftwood. There are also some franchise locations in Las Vegas at a casino and I think DFW Airport is supposed to get one.
Prunepicker 04-13-2014, 09:11 PM ... the bologna was good though.
I've found that it's virtually impossible to screw up smoking bologna and
link sausages.
bluedogok 04-13-2014, 09:12 PM You can ruin sausage, I have had some great and some awful sausage.
Prunepicker 04-13-2014, 09:17 PM I'm going to fix a cool smoker, as in cool smoke, so I can smoke cheese. I've
got an idea or two. Maybe I can manage to do it this spring. Alton Brown
used three lockers, like those in a gym. One contained the smoke source,
another carried the smoke through several feet of tubing used to carry
link in dryers and the last for the cheese or whatever needed to be
smoked without heat.
