This place has a fantastic patio! Something that's really lacking in Bricktown.

I'm sure. I have touched it with mine own hands.

I CAN tell you that some brick-pattern masonite does exist in the place; behind the bar. Covering perfectly-good real brick. Not by the owner's choice; since it is considered a food prep area code required they have something they can wipe down back there. It was the best they could do; code REALLY wants FRP for that, which is a hideous white plastic wallboard. They just had to grit their teeth and comply.

I'm sure the folks who own this joint will add to it as the years go by. Some people have a limited budget and can't completely build a palace out of gold on day one. Were there some things that could have been done better?, sure. Now, If I lived down in DD, I would go over there myself and offer pull the weeds. Again, I bet as the years(maybe just months) go by, they will add things like landscaping, more amenities, and perhaps even build real brick around the top to replace what's up there now.

They actually WANTED to put a rooftop patio up there, and I think that might still be a part of their long--term plans. They are definitely not done with the building.

Yes, I have indeed consumed a few there, thanks for asking.

Is it a reinforced roof? Seating next to the condensing unit and its noise? Safety of people drinking and going up and down stairs?

Glad they reconsidered trying that.

Plutonic Panda
03-21-2013, 05:13 PM
My guess would be to prevent people from stealing it. Might be cheaper also to have it up there, instead of putting it on the ground and building a cage around it.

Rover
03-21-2013, 05:19 PM
That is one reason. The other is that the condenser might stay cleaner up there. On the ground, grass, dirt, etc. is sucked into the narrow fins when the unit operates.

However, on the roof is generally a bad idea as the roof gets very hot in the summer and the unit operates more inefficiently the hotter the environment. Another danger is the vibration of the unit reverberating (drumming) through the roof/ceiling if not iisolated properly.

Stopped in for a beer the Tuesday night. Cool little place. Waitress was really friendly and fun. Nothing to eat, though, not even snacks. I asked her about bar food, etc. and she said they would be starting with soup and sandwiches soon and would be adding a kitchen later. I can't figure out where, but I hope that's right.

Anyway, there is a grand opening party scheduled soon. I'll go back just because it's such an unusual little building and the staff was fun.

I talked with them last month and got the impression that they were going to punch a hole in the wall and add on a kitchen. I told them that I thought that they were going to have rooftop patio at first. They told me that they thought about doing it but there is too much liability. I guess they thought someone would get too drunk and fall off.

This is a great place and some are making a whole lot of nothing out of mole hills. I hate the cliche but it fits here: this is definitely a First World problem on the order of several magnitudes!

Went there yesterday and had a good time. That's what's important. I would be curious to know how many customers they've had walk up and say, geez that board around the top of the building looks bad, I'm not going in there. You people need to get a grip. It's not perfect, but its a decent neighborhood bar that can only get better. Would prefer to have it there than the empty shell of a building there a year ago.

They should try to make it look as shady as possible. Some people would probably laud it for being "authentic".

I think there are two discussions going on here: (1) People critiquing the exterior of the bar (pretty valid critique) and (2) people lauding a nice bar addition to the area (it's a nice, little bar). So... How can "we" show appreciation for a solid bar addition, but also push for external improvements?

I just don't understand how the owner can sit back and wipe off his hands and be like "yep, that looks great!"

Work buckets and brick debris with wood scraps lying all around the building's backside. Weeds and overgrown grass in front of the building. Also I wonder if those white pipes are still sticking out of the ground?

The random square of missing concrete on the patio that looks like a hazard? Easily filled.

The christmas style lighting dangling in front of the building looks very amateurish. At least get some LED rope lighting with tracking to install it into [can be had for reasonably cheap]. This can be done and highlight the cool shape of the building while drawing more attention than just "here we tossed up some old christmas lights".

Sometimes people who try hard... fail, sometimes they succeed; but when you don't really try at all, you give yourself only one possibility.

The lights outside don't look "amateurish" at all. They are actually old school Edison style bulbs. LED rope lighting would look tacky and cheap. If you don't like the place simply don't go!

It's funny because people will gripe that BT doesn't offer much for locals. I think that has much to do with it being perceived as being dominated by mediocre restaurants like Hooters (even though it offers the Mantel, Micky Mantels, and Nonna's) and cheesy bars /clubs like City Walk and and Skyy Bar. So, yes, it is a little odd to see some complain when it gets a couple of less pretentious places to join the mix. Some improvements could and probably will be made, but, for now, it's really the simple pub concept that Bricktown needed, imo, and I'm happy to see it added.

Pete

From all accounts, it seems to be a big success and full of lots of return-customer locals.

Sounds like they have more work to do in adding a small kitchen, and I'm sure the current bits of shabbiness will round into form.

I'm really looking forward to patronizing in person -- seems very much like my type of place.

I havent been either, havent even walked by it. But I will say that if you took pictures of the roofs of many other places, it wont look too pretty. I imagine from the ground it doesnt look too bad.

I've been, and it looks pretty shoddy. I certainly appreciate their investment and I enjoy Slim's a great deal, but it does need work. I hope the owners continue to make improvements to the property.

This may sound like a ridiculous question but is there smoking in this bar? I went with a friend to the Fox and Hound for Super Bowl and the smoke bothered my allergies. Wedge Pizza right there and in fact, they grab pizzas for the bar sometimes. There was one sitting there 5 minutes ago they were just letting people grab a slice off of.

I've seen people order a Wedge Pizza and eat it out on the patio a couple times as well.

Great, thanks.

I think this is a great little bar. My biggest question his how did they obtain an ABC-2 License which requires 50% of their sales to be in food when they do not even have a kitchen? Granted, I know they have 1 year before having to prove sales percentages but there isn't even a kitchen to cook in!

I went there yesterday after work, talked to the manager and she said they were planning on adding a kitchen by adding on to the building to the northwest corner. It will be small, but will have classic pub food.

JarrodH
04-30-2013, 10:00 AM
I understand they plan to add a kitchen which is awesome. My concern is that by being a "pub" and only selling small amounts of food, How do they plan to do 50% of gross sales in food product? Yes, 3.2 abv beer counts as a food product, but my impression from my visit to the bar was that they specialize in high abv beer which goes against them for ABLE's sake. I would just hate to see a little bar like this shut down due to the fact that they didn't properly zone in the beginning.

LibertyOKC
04-30-2013, 05:32 PM
3.2 beer does not count as a food product. Some places were able to get away with that at one time, but ABLE has brought that to a halt.

When I was there they had a pie from the Wedge. That counts as food!

Seriously, why are people trying to get this good bar busted? I just want them to modernize / improve the music selections a bit, not get an ABLE raid.

The only more blatant anachronism that I can think of at the moment is ABLE defining the word Pub for public consumption and enjoyment.
Perhaps ABLE should rent some space in Ye Olde Shoppes Nuveax of The City Dell and headquarter/museum there.
Geez. (and i've been living in the midst and the outskirts of this non-sense since '73 =)

I have been to the bar each of the last 2 weekends, I really enjoy the place. I was simply stating the rules and violation, not trying to get them busted. I just don't understand why they didn't properly zone in the first place. With it being south of the railroad tracks, I believe they could have fallen under the bricktown overlay for ABC-3 licensing.

I just don't see the point in risking a business that they have worked hard to build over a miniscule paperwork issue. Worst case scenario is they had to file for an ABC overlay with the planning commission and have it approved by city council.

Has this been all cleaned up? I mean, it all looks rather nice in that photo.
