View Full Version : Skinny Slim's Pete 10-03-2012, 08:57 PM They have to go out to the job site for inspections. dankrutka 10-03-2012, 10:06 PM "Hi [Insert contact name], Im calling cause I saw pictures of your place that is still in the process of being remodeled on this local blog. Six people think it looks like crap. Fix it now or we will wage a holy forum war against you without you probably even knowing." That will go over well... Well, someone could contact them with respectful concern before it is too late. You're the only one that suggested a "holy forum war," but people can ask questions and make suggestions in the name of quality development in an area that has been highly subsidized by tax payers. OKCTalk has had several successes in encouraging better development despite your dramatic either-or analysis. Pete 10-04-2012, 09:51 AM From Will... They are clearly still working on the building so let's hope this starts looking a lot better: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8034/8053672567_638ea8fd16_b.jpg UnFrSaKn 10-04-2012, 09:54 AM Hey Pete, I took some photos the other day and did a few panoramas of it. I'm finally getting caught up on the photo editing. I took hundreds of photos the past few days. Keep an eye on my Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/williamhider/). LakeEffect 10-04-2012, 09:59 AM I'm not sure the role of the design committee -- in this case, Bricktown -- once plans are approved. I know the planning office sends out inspectors and my guess is that they continually check to make sure what is built matches the approved specs. Cafeboeuf could probably educate us all on this process. In a perfect world, yes, they would continually check on them. :) Certificates of Approval have a 2 year limit (with extensions available). An auto-inspection is scheduled for the 2 year deadline. However, if they also have a building permit, a zoning inspection is required before a Certificate of Occupancy is issued. Since design is part of zoning, the Certificate of Approval is evaluated at that time as well. The design is not inspected as part of construction; however, staff usually keeps tabs on projects and if they see an issue, they make note and contact the people on the Certificate of Approval. UnFrSaKn 10-04-2012, 10:07 AM By the way, that photo was while I was sitting on the curb in front of the Police Station waiting for Steve to show up for the last RetroMetroOKC meeting on September 17th. So that's nearly a month old. Pete 10-04-2012, 10:07 AM Hey Pete, I took some photos the other day and did a few panoramas of it. I'm finally getting caught up on the photo editing. I hope you don't mind me posting links when I see something interesting to share. UnFrSaKn 10-04-2012, 10:09 AM No, that saves me a lot of time. The Devon Energy area photos from September 25th will be up in a short while. I haven't been back by here so it's probably not changed much. I assumed the "skinny" part was a reference to the building. Serendipity, I suppose. betts 10-04-2012, 06:43 PM I suspect that when the grass is mowed and there are tables out front it will look better. Since no one had done anything with the building previously, this is an improvement to me. HangryHippo 10-16-2012, 01:20 PM I just spoke with the owner, who by the way was a really nice guy, and he says they will be open in 20 days. I looked inside and things are moving along very quickly now inside. Does the outside of this establishment look any better than in earlier pictures? Spartan 10-16-2012, 01:24 PM I suspect that when the grass is mowed and there are tables out front it will look better. Since no one had done anything with the building previously, this is an improvement to me. This. HangryHippo 10-16-2012, 02:24 PM Not really. But the inside actually looks like it may be nice. Might be one of those projects where they just need to generate some cash flow before they do everything they want to do to it. That's encouraging. Thanks for the update Sid. Pete 10-16-2012, 02:34 PM We have talked on other threads about "bar districts" but all the sudden we have one in the Deep Deuce area: DD grill, Le Cep Bistro, The Wedge, a huge bar and probably a couple of restaurants in Aloft, another restaurant to come in Level and Skinny Slims, which I suspect will fast become the local DD hangout. dankrutka 10-16-2012, 04:18 PM It's good progress, but I still don't think this area would qualify. A bar district needs places that are primarily bars, not primarily pizza places and hotels, that are close together. These places are each separated by a block or two. I guess the best way to define a bar district is an area where lots of groups of people go to with the idea of hopping between bars. I don't think this area is there. I love what's happening in this area though. Urbanized 10-16-2012, 04:29 PM Calling Skinny Slim's a Deep Deuce establishment is a stretch. Separated from DD by railroad tracks, weeds, hefty grade separation, Main Street Parking Ocean. Hopefully we'll see some pedestrian-focused improvements in that area that will make it easier to access for DD residents, and for places like The Wedge to be easier to access from Bricktown. Pete 10-16-2012, 04:35 PM Didn't say Skinny Slims was in DD, just that it may become a hangout for the locals who live there. Urbanized 10-16-2012, 04:45 PM Understood. catch22 10-16-2012, 05:40 PM Isn't there a staircase along the sidewalk of Walnut Bridge that drops down basically right to the front door of SS? Pete 01-24-2013, 02:25 PM Small $2,000 building permit for this project so it looks like it is still going forward. Pete 02-15-2013, 11:23 AM Hearing they will be installing their patio in the next few weeks, and that will be a great spot on nice days. Love the character of this place -- bet it will be a big hit. Nothing to eat, though, not even snacks. I asked her about bar food, etc. and she said they would be starting with soup and sandwiches soon and would be adding a kitchen later. I can't figure out where, but I hope that's right. Anyway, there is a grand opening party scheduled soon. I'll go back just because it's such an unusual little building and the staff was fun. jedicurt 02-22-2013, 10:43 AM Stopped in for a beer the Tuesday night. Cool little place. Doh! Can't wait to check it out. Not tonight as I'm on call unfortunately but hopefully soon! Good spot for catching Thunder games I reckon? shawnw 03-16-2013, 09:58 PM I was surprised to hear this place criticized (construction wise) during Steve's chat last week. Having been there I didn't notice what was pointed out, but then I wasn't looking for it. I thought it was a nice, quaint place that got a good jump on an area that is about to explode. dankrutka 03-16-2013, 10:31 PM The criticism pertains to the exterior on the highway side so you wouldn't notice from inside the bar. It's a nice little bar that took shortcuts on the exterior. shawnw 03-16-2013, 11:10 PM Oh I see Pete 03-17-2013, 08:55 AM Here is a recent photo. Honestly this place looks gross. I understand the concept and limited budget etc... But at least kill/pull the weeds/grass growing between the patio and building? HangryHippo 03-21-2013, 03:52 PM Man, I stand by my original assertion. This place is an absolute dump. I kind of agreed with Sid earlier that we had bigger fish to fry, but what kind of business do we have going after bigger fish when we can't even corral the little ones? This development is trashy. Look at Sid's pictures, the workmanship is total crap. Just really disappointing that they couldn't have done this in a better manner. Urbanized 03-21-2013, 03:55 PM The screen would look 500% better if it were painted black. With apologies to Sid, the brick on the walk-is NOT a brick board product or anything like that, it is actually thin brick tiled onto the wall and then grouted. Materially it is made of the same substance as an actual brick wall, but it is not stacked and coursed like brick. Like I said, it's more like a tiled wall. Made out of tiles made out of brick. I'm sure they'll do some landscaping. The folks who run it are obviously interested in adding to the district rather than subtracting from, and take an obvious pride in having a nice place. I have no doubt the nice inside will spill out onto the outside soon. Urbanized 03-21-2013, 04:01 PM By the way, if it will make anyone feel better, the roof-top and the area around the walk-in are pretty much ONLY visible to people WALKING up and down the Walnut Street Bridge on the east stairs. Which probably means Sid and about 5 other people LOL. HangryHippo 03-21-2013, 04:02 PM Urbanized, are you sure about the walk in being "tiled" brick? Weren't there pictures posted (here?) that them wrapping it with what essentially looked like thick wallpaper...? I'll see if I can't locate them. No matter, it just looks shoddy on the exterior. I hope that they are interested in letting the nice inside spill out. |
