JOHNINSOKC 04-27-2005, 08:56 AM It would be nice if Liberty Tower eventually became the SECOND tallest building in OKC. Our skyline needs a new identity. For crying out loud, we haven't built a new skyscraper downtown since 1984. I was a freshman in high school back then and now I'm nearly 36 years old. The city really needs to promote developing office space downtown and NOT the suburbs.
mranderson 04-27-2005, 09:08 AM Sooner & Rice: How many floors do all of the building you list have?
Here's a link to a complete list of all the tallest buildings in OKC, complete with stats and pictures:
http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/ci/bu/sk/li/?id=101327&bt=9&ht=2&sro=1
The website has a comprehensive database for all cities and major buildings in th world.
Patrick 04-27-2005, 01:04 PM I thinkour best bet at getting a new office tower downtown is Devon. Unfortunately, with space available at KerrMcGee tower and Chase Tower, they'll probably opt to either lease or purchase space there before they consider building a new office tower. Building a new office tower would have some benefits for Devon. It would consolidate all of their space into one campus/building, thus giving them a more solid identity.
okcpulse 04-27-2005, 01:17 PM I designed a concept for a new signature tower for downtown Oklahoma City, but it's too big to fit on my scanner. I may have to take it to Kinkos today to shrink it down.
There was originally to be a "3 Galleria" building in addition to the first two.
I even saw a few renderings of it and it was to be about 50 stories.
However, just like the mall, it never materialized.
okcpulse 04-27-2005, 02:30 PM What would be a location for a new office tower in downtown OKC?
St Mark's parking lot on Broadway & 4th?
The land in front of the Oklahoman Bldg?
Midtown area?
If there's money to build a highrise, there will be a spot made available for it...
Sooner&RiceGrad 04-27-2005, 06:04 PM What would be a location for a new office tower in downtown OKC?
Hopefully to the South of I 40.
brianinok 04-27-2005, 08:49 PM There could be one (or many for that matter) built north of the new I-40 (south of the current one).
Sooner&RiceGrad 04-27-2005, 08:53 PM Exactly my point. We must look into how urban this area of the city will become. Let past rants be gone, the freeway will be moved. There is nothing we can do.
But for one, we really have to begin looking at extending the downtown district itself south a ways. I believe the city was looking into expanding the Myriad Gardens to the south, and form a downtown around this "central park."
brianinok 04-27-2005, 08:59 PM Sooner: I think that is a great idea. I think it was smart of the city to put in the Myriad Gardens years ago. Although, I wish they would not have torn down all those wonderful old buildings to do it. Oh well, no sense living in the past!
Sooner&RiceGrad 04-27-2005, 09:10 PM You mean the 400 foot Hotel Oklahoma.
okcpulse 04-27-2005, 10:13 PM I'm going to try and design a concept for a multi-use skyscraper for downtown OKC on computer. Right now it's just on paper.
Sooner&RiceGrad 04-27-2005, 10:15 PM If anyone financially backed you up I am sure it would feasable.
Patrick 04-28-2005, 01:25 AM Sooner&RiceGrad, your idea of turning Myriad Gardens into a "central" park if you will, is a great idea. Just expand downtown south to surround the gardens on the north and south sides. Of course, I'd love to see Myriad Gardens expanded, and possibly even a second Crystal Bridge added, as originally planned, to house desert plants, converting the existing Crystal Bridge into a complete rainforest.
russellc 04-28-2005, 07:38 PM Since the title is "'OKC's Tallest Structures" the tallest 'strucure' in OKC is the WKY antenna at 1601'.
Sooner&RiceGrad 04-28-2005, 08:33 PM And since you mention that, I will add that at the time of it's construction it was the world's tallest antenna.
Was it the world's tallest structure? When was the CN Tower built?
russellc 04-28-2005, 10:28 PM The CN Tower was built in 1976.
I think I remember hearing that the WKY tower was the tallest structure (of any kind) ever built, at the time.
Sooner&RiceGrad 04-28-2005, 10:39 PM Channel 9?
metro 04-28-2005, 10:58 PM what is the purpose of this thread
Sooner&RiceGrad 04-28-2005, 11:02 PM Goodness gracious.
To discuss OKC's tallest structures.
okcpulse 04-28-2005, 11:37 PM Channel 9's TV tower was completed in 1953. Was the world's tallest man-made structure at that time.
Sooner&RiceGrad 04-28-2005, 11:42 PM Ha!
I knew it.
mranderson 04-29-2005, 05:44 AM Channel 9's TV tower was completed in 1953. Was the world's tallest man-made structure at that time.
In fact, the call letters KWTV stand for "Worlds Tallest Video."
I think a mixed use concept (hotel, condo, apartment, retail) building would be a great success downtown. Someday I'll build one. Along with a lot of other ideas I have for resorts around Oklahoma.
okcpulse 04-29-2005, 01:35 PM You and me both, Luke!
Patrick 04-30-2005, 12:38 AM You and me both, Luke!
Hey, when we become rich and famous in the next few years, if we pool all of our money together it could happen! lol! :)
metro 05-02-2005, 12:49 PM i know its to discuss the tallest structures, hence the title, however what is it trying to accomplish is what im getting at
Patrick 05-03-2005, 01:00 AM i know its to discuss the tallest structures, hence the title, however what is it trying to accomplish is what im getting at
I don't think there's a real mission for this thread, other than to discuss significant tall structures in our city.

Patrick 05-03-2005, 01:24 AM I'm not an international buff, so I'll probably miss most of these.....
If I remember right, First National is art deco.....since City Place was built around the same time, I'd imagine it is as well, although I haven't looked at it closely.
I'd say the rest are modern.
I know absolutely nothing about architecture though, and will admit that here. I'll be interested to hear other people's comments.
okcpulse 05-03-2005, 01:32 AM I'll have the correct answers on my website once it is officially launched on Friday.

So what do I win? :)
Sooner&RiceGrad 05-03-2005, 06:58 PM Some downtown buildings have no architectural style. Most are International, some are Art Deco, a handful of Modern.
What would Italian Renaissance be?
okcpulse 05-09-2005, 01:00 AM Two architectural styles do not exist in downtown's office towers. Gothic and Italian Renaissance. Art deco, International style and Modern are commonly found in both Oklahoma City and Tulsa.

Do any of you remember the scrolling sign that used to be on top of city place?
HOT ROD 05-10-2005, 03:45 AM very nice sketch of your new tower!!!
Looks very much like the WAMU tower here in Seattle!!!
Continue the Renaissance (and hope your tower takes "shape" soon!!!)
okcpulse 05-10-2005, 11:56 PM Thank you HOT ROD! Hope you enjoyed my new website. I update it every Friday with new articles, but I'll keep the sketch on the site for a while.
