Sorry to hear that they closed. I think they built too far north. We used to go up there from time to time.

IMHO, it's hard to believe any of them are still open. I've always viewed Denny's as somewhere to go only if everything else is closed.

Hysterical ... but a sad comment on the place all the same. I actually miss the Denny's that used to be in Norman, and knowing I wasn't going to fight a noisy crowd is part of the reason why.

Well, all the IHOPs in town (which is really Denny's serious competition), seem to be very successful. No one ever hears about any of them closing anywhere.

Well Denny's on May was competing with IHOP and Jimmy's Egg, recipe for disaster.

Absolutely; and both IHOP and Jimmy's Egg tend to offer superior food of the same category. Same for Mimi's, as well.

Whoever works for Denny's to assemble a due diligence report as to the best location to build a new facility might need to find another line of work.

That Denny's was terrible. Slow service and bad food. Went there the first time, took 2 hours, and our order was wrong twice. Second time, the place had a raw sewage smell, and we couldn't go in. Had potential, but was poorly kept.

Dang . . . (yet another!) "Denny's" bites the dust . . .
Double Dang

i have a fond memory
of stopping by a Denny's
over on 39th, nw
in the temporal vicinity
of Christmas Eve
a few measly years ago
on a cosmic scale
after The Services
at a local mega-church . . .
on account of it,
that is, Denny's,
was the only place open
for fast food
(on christmas eve)

i recall eliciting
an honest
and sincere
yet unexpected
laugh from the
owner/waiter/cousin/whatever
when I ordered
"Pigs in Blankets"
off the menu

apparantly,
he was a new owner
or simply filling in
for a related waiter
who didn't show up
on account of
christmas

in any case
he thought
"Peegs Ahn Blankets" (?)
was the funniest thing
he had heard that day

his honest laugh at the thought
makes me more sensitive
to "others'" sense of humor

ps: i had to 'splain to heem whut
peegs en blankets wuz. =)
and by golly,
they was good

See that happen with older properties but as far as I know this was a new, built from scratch location.

On a side note: maybe one reason for their demise was it didn't look like the Dennys we are used to here...if it hadn't been for the sign...i had to do a double take the one time I drove by it.

Any chance that Jimmy's Egg moves into that space? I would think they could get in for cheap and have a nicer, and I'm asumming larger facility than where they're at. Also, parking for Jimmy's Egg is pretty tight. Just a thought...

It was new, I just think it was poorly managed. It definitely had potential though. I always used to like Denny's food. Maybe it's not as good as it used to be. I liked the one on May and 63rd, and the one in Yukon when they were around.

I'm pretty much done with Denny's now, the few times I went to this one and the few times I have been to the one in Edmond, it's either slow staff, wrong order or both. I would rate breakfast places in this order: 1. Jimmy's Egg 2. Waffle House 3. cracker Barrel 4. IHOP 5. Denny's. I would LOVE to see OKC get a Bob Evans someday, they are owned by the same people that own Mimi's but Bob Evans is WAY better.

For me, Jimmy's Egg is the best breakfast place in town - although I will qualify that by saying the experience varies *greatly* with the location. I've frequented the I-240 and Walker location, and have rarely been disappointed with their Paradise Omelet. A friend of mine has reported less-than-stellar experiences with the Moore location, and I've had mixed/below-average results with the location in MWC - although its been quite some time since I've tried the one there - >= 1 year at least.

We liked IHOP until their prices just got too high for what they served, and we jumped to Jimmy's Egg. We go there maybe every six weeks, and even that may be generous. We've cut back on eating out in general to save money, so all those averages are dropping :)

Now, something I will say I noticed about Jimmy's Egg on I-240 - their idea of what constitutes two or three eggs is getting curious, as it seems my most recent omelet there, while still very tasty, had shrunk. They also changed their bread to what seemed like a fairly generic restaurant variety from what I think they previously made in-house, so it could be bits of cost cutting. Not sure.

I can't fathom a Denny's, even on its best day, competing with places like Jimmy's Egg. We've never tried Mimi's for breakfast, but sure enjoyed it as a dinner a couple of times....too far away for us to try very often...

LOL
Of the ones listed, i would put them in this order (quality of food)
1. Cracker Barrel
2. Dennys
3. IHOP (used to be interchangeable w/Dennys but slipped since they recently switched to Pepsi products...Diet Pepsi in particular)
99. Jimmys Egg (very bland)
100. Waffle House (stereotypical greasy spoon)

Waffle House used to rank a lot higher for value for the money when they had the all-you-can-eat menu option a few years back, still a greasy spoon but it wasn't an over-priced one.

We apparently ate at this Denny's just a day or two before it closed and did not have a clue that it was closing.

We go out for breakfast virtually every Saturday morning and often on Sunday. Our favorite Jimmy's Egg is the I-240 and Walker location. After reading these comments though, I am going to suggest we try Cracker Barrel this weekend. Our favorite breakfast spot closed - Maggie's on 39th Expressway.

You can't beat Cracker Barrel's Country Boy Breakfast.

"Country Ham, Pork Chops or Steak* grilled to order, Three Eggs* cooked to order served with Fried Apples, Hashbrown Casserole, Grits, Sawmill Gravy and Homemade Buttermilk Biscuits along with real Butter and the best Preserves, Jam n' Apple Butter when available."

To me it's not a good breakfast unless you can walk away feeling fat and happy. I eat what I want, I exercise and I carry good health insurance so you can go lecture somebody else.

I like IHOP for boring consistency, but my favorite brekfast place in town is Joey's Cafe at May and 122nd. They've got some good American style stuff, but also a lot more European style offerings.

I did eat at Divine Swine recently and was incredibly impressed. The service is slow, but the food great. Best ham I've ever had. It's a small family place that does some limited sourcing of local ingredients, so get there early.

Value for the money breakfast buffet options:

1) Grandy's (w/coupon about $6)
2) Golden Corral
3) Hometown

GC has a much wider selection than HT and prices are similar. Both have omelette stations.

oneforone,
First, I really enjoy Cracker Barrel, and second, I'm having a little fun pointing out how subjective things like food are. I don't care for their Country ham (my wife loved it), pork chops or steak. I can always eat three eggs but no apples, can't stand the hashbrown casserole, grits and have never been a fan of biscuits and gravy (another favorite of my wife). I also don't eat jelly. I have learned that they make "real" hash browns on request and they are delicious. My breakfast at Cracker Barrel is boring to most, bacon, two eggs over medium, hash browns, rye bread with extra butter, no jelly. I can't think of a better place country wide to enjoy breakfast. Your choices are not mine, but if you enjoy it, who am I to question it?

I'm with ctchandler. If Cracker B never again ruined hashbrowns by turning them into that casserole, I'd be pleased. That noted, they do indeed make regular hashbrowns and make them well. Most of the rest of what they do breakfast wise is danged good. I really can't speak to the rest of their offerings, as if I go to CB I order breakfast food over 99% of the time. I'd say 100% but I think somebody talked me into a non breakfast order once long long ago.

DENNYS ON NORTH MAY AND MEMORIAL BY QUAIL SPRINGS MALL. THE TRUTH ON WHY IT CLOSED : okay...buckle down. here is what really happened. owner 1 is a part owner of several dennys in the okc metro, probably why they are all dumps. The owners of the dennys in okc area are basically slum lords. owner 2 built the building and went into partership with owner 1.
1. this was by far the worst place for a dennys. dennys are known to be located off the freeway. if you know the area well. they were supposed to build on the old steak and ale lot that was recently cleared for a mini mall. it was right on the corner off may and memorial other side of the freeway. These 2 idiots decided to save a few thousand and move it down the road WHERE NOBODY COULD SEE IT.
2. due to slumping sales, terrible management, unrealistic potential, and terrible restaurant layout owner 1 decided to sue owner 2 over some questionable accounting practices. owner 2 built this building and took a loan out for x amount. since he is the builder. he only paid half that amount and was double billing everything on paper to make it look like he was paying his fair share as half owner. owner 1 sued owner 2 and owner 2 sued owner 1 for being retarded in court and apparently they both lost. lol.
up until recently they were losing thousands monthly. basically based off pure ignorance on both sides. they finally shut it down within the past week and a half or so.

a. for the first 2-3 months. if you ever ate there . they had a sewer leak that wreaked of hell. nobody addressed that problem. quite appetizing when your eating some over priced greasy food. i knew the Gm. he was stealing left and right and was always drunk. lol. wonder what happened to him? hmm.......

b. the dennys concept is dead. you can blame future closings and expect future closing based on a dying concept. as a corporation. they are lost. all these gimmicky promotions they do is ridiculous. anything that did work was taken off the menu. dennys corporation lives in a wet dream where they are still 1.

c. i have eaten at all these dennys in the area and worked in the restaurant business over 15 years at every position. Dennys is filthy. you wanna see if a restaurant is clean are not. do the obvious first. check tabletop for syrup residue. check your silverware. i imagine all their cleaning equipment is old. check walls, ac ducts, etc for mildew and mold. once you have done the visuals check the cracks of your seat, against the wall especially and tell me what you feel. lol. check under the table. feel around. yeah. dennys in edmond was the nastiest restaurant i have ever been to. i dont know if their vent hood works or not but when you walk in you can feel the oils attatching to your skin. the first time and the last time i ate their the owner or Gm was going ape sht in the kitchen yelling at someone. way to keep it professional.

We were disappointed with Good Gravy's gravy - seemed like they were all just cream gravy with whatever meat you ordered thrown in, but none of them really tasted like gravy with ham cooked in it, or gravy with sausage cooked in it or ..... Just the same gravy with some meat stirred in right before they served it to you.

Have to agree with the other poster about Joey's, though - great breakfast place with some items/ingredients you don't see at all the other ones... A secret we discovered is that they have hash browns in addition to the home-fry-type potatoes, they're not listed on the menu, so you have to ask for them, but they do them quite well.

Denny's is a place I only visit for the purpose of sipping crappy coffee after midnight with my friend. I never order food there anymore because I can get the same junk elsewhere for like 1/4 of the price. I sorta miss the one in Norman, but it was ALWAYS dirty and looked like 1994 in there. I'm pretty sure the smoking section was some kind of public health hazard, lol.

For late-night greasy spoon fare, I just stick to IHOP or the Waffle House in Norman near the westside Walmart (cuz there's a waitress there that likes us, haha). Actually, I kind of hate the Norman IHOP, because it seems like there's only ever one waitress working the floor, and as a result, service is sloooow. But enough about that.

Let us know what you find out...I'm wondering if they are only taking half the building as I had heard of another restaurant owner was planning to start there but didn't need the entire space.
