Spartan 05-09-2012, 03:25 PM I was thinking that just the other day while I was at the Hideaway. What I don't understand is why there isn't a light at 8th..just from looking out the window while I was eating my meal, I was really pleasantly surprised how much pedestrian activity is there. Granted 9th has emerged as a more prominent crossing, 8th would make traffic lights evenly dispersed up and down A-Alley.
I also don't understand how Hideaway was able to designate all of the street parking along 8th for to-go orders, while they haven't provided any handicap parking. Since when did to-go parking take precedence over handicap parking? That was a problem I encountered personally, as I was taking my grandparents downtown for dinner..
From the perspective of being from a large local family that has to account for a few octogenarians when we go out to eat together, the handicap parking issue is the single biggest issue that makes downtown restaurants a tough sell to the group. But I do my best!
Larry OKC 05-10-2012, 08:45 AM Spartan: you are probably already doing this but just in case... while it isn't always feasible, if handicapped parking is non-existant (either by design or already occupied), I drop my Mom off in front of the door and then park as close as possible...one thing that irks me is when they put the handicapped spaces some distance away from the door because that is where they decided to put the ramp...
Urbanized 05-10-2012, 09:40 AM I'm pretty sure Hideaway is exempt from any parking requirements whatsoever, including handicapped parking, due to zoning. I'm also pretty sure the "to go orders only" is strictly a bluff/honor system. On-street parking that is not on private property cannot be designated as being for the use of an individual business.

wschnitt 06-04-2012, 10:13 AM Yeah, I really like this building. It reminds me of the ones on 10th between Harvey and Hudson that got torn down for the "redevelopment/Valar Health project that never came to fruition.
Spartan 06-04-2012, 02:50 PM The Red Cross property was a 1-story, but otherwise very similar. The maddening thing about the MBD is that you can't contact anybody about the property, as it's just set up with a phone number that nobody ever answers. I suspect it goes to an old-timey red telephone in a dark, smokey room somewhere..

Spartan 06-04-2012, 07:05 PM There are some projects that they are not seeking historic tax credits with, for example, the project on 12th where they're adding a floor - and 1212 also. I would suspect that the Marion site may be new construction sooner than anyone viable actually wresting the old Red Cross site from the MBD/City's hands. MidtownR is open to preserving the Marion but they would then consider it their legacy gift to the community, and personally, if they're going to take a hit on one project for the community I'm not sure if we want it to be the Marion. That kind of an opportunity might best help the downtown retail picture, a la how they subsidized the rent for Cityscape. What if they could do that for UO or GAP or some kind of destination retailer. I'm just thinking pragmatically, of course, I'd hate to see the Marion go, but MidtownR is already poised to be the most important HPer in recent OKC history.

This is one of my favorite projects around the city.
CCOKC 07-17-2012, 09:40 PM If you have any pictures of the north side of this project they would be worth seeing as well. There has been much progress on this project in the past few weeks. It really does not look like the same building as a year ago. I am really looking forward to the dumpster being gone.

I talked with what appeared to be a project supervisor and he said "a few more weeks" and it will be done.

Urbanized 04-20-2014, 12:48 PM Rand's work always has a uniting, distinctive style. I think he's at his best when he's doing adaptive reuse of historic structures. He has a great talent for weaving together modern and the old, and I think it begins with his respect for the past. Not every architect has that respect.
