Larry OKC 06-02-2011, 01:53 AM thought they had paid the back taxes and had reopened? rcjunkie 06-02-2011, 05:40 AM thought they had paid the back taxes and had reopened? They did, it is. BBatesokc 06-02-2011, 07:02 AM They did, it is. Did the downtown location open in the last couple of days? It has been closed for weeks and appears at least 1-2 people are living there at night. I had heard additional financial woes were not going to allow for that location to reopen anytime soon, if ever. Corndog1 06-02-2011, 09:49 AM They had a place south of Noble in Slaughterville back during football season, dont know if its still open or not. It was solid, I thought the food was better than at either locations in the city area. icecold 06-02-2011, 06:03 PM Did the downtown location open in the last couple of days? I had heard additional financial woes were not going to allow for that location to reopen anytime soon, if ever. I'm with you Bates. I have tried to go there twice in the last couple weeks and it has been closed. Tried JT tacos one day and Leos was closed that day as well. rondvu 06-04-2011, 03:14 PM I have to admit the cake is what brought me in, not the BBQ. It was good, the cake was the best. Wambo36 06-05-2011, 09:35 AM I used to go buy one every year for my birthday cake. The whole family loves it and no one has to bake. If anyone gets the recipe please post it. bluedogok 06-05-2011, 09:43 AM We had one at my 40th birthday party and we try to stop in at Leo's when in town. My wife tried to replicate it and came close, a mix of yellow cake mix and pound cake mix. ck76 06-05-2011, 10:07 AM LEO'S BBQ SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!! MR.T'S BBQ was pretty good ,but they went belly up. ck76 06-05-2011, 10:13 AM TOM'S BBQ also went out of business. ctchandler 06-05-2011, 11:27 AM Are you sure? I drove by Friday and the sign says they are remodeling. Sometimes that is wishful thinking on the owners part while they try to get their problems straightened out. C. T. TOM'S BBQ also went out of business. BBatesokc 06-05-2011, 12:39 PM LEO'S BBQ SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!! MR.T'S BBQ was pretty good ,but they went belly up. Lots of people would disagree with that assessment. Went to the location East of Lincoln Blvd. last week for lunch. Had to wait for a seat for our group of 5. As usual, it was very good. They also confirmed the downtown location will not be an option for awhile. Wambo36 06-05-2011, 04:27 PM Lots of people would disagree with that assessment. Went to the location East of Lincoln Blvd. last week for lunch. Had to wait for a seat for our group of 5. As usual, it was very good. They also confirmed the downtown location will not be an option for awhile.Did they happen to say why? ctchandler 06-05-2011, 05:13 PM I suppose it is your taste and that's the thing about restaurants, but I don't know anybody that didn't like Leo's. His sauce is excellent and his hot sauce is wonderfully miserable (hot). I have to mix it with the mild and I love heat. His ribs rank right up at the top of the OKC area barbecue, in my opinion. But, I respect your opinion. C. T. LEO'S BBQ SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!! MR.T'S BBQ was pretty good ,but they went belly up. Larry OKC 06-06-2011, 02:26 AM Leos at least made it on one of the Food Network programs (forget which one) and they didn't feature crap food so that says something. I know they mentioned the desert and think they showed delivering to the Capitol. Don't know if they gave the recipe for anything or not, but may be able to catch it on a repeat? jstaylor62 06-06-2011, 09:18 AM Hey everyone, I really appreciate all of the non-recipe responses... Don't know if they gave the recipe for anything or not, but may be able to catch it on a repeat?Larry, it was Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. I love that show. When we travel, I look at the towns and cities we'll be spending time in and try to find if he's been to any unique eateries in the area that we can try. It doesn't always work out but we've had some pretty awesome meals that way. In the OKC area I had already eaten at most of the ones he's featured but not Nic's or the catfish place. I now eat at Nic's about every month or so and I'm still waiting to try the catfish place. Back to Leo's, I don't recall them giving the cake recipe. I think I would have remembered it, but I could be wrong. BBatesokc 06-06-2011, 09:22 AM Hey everyone, I really appreciate all of the non-recipe responses... Lets be realistic - what are the odds there is actually going to be a published recipe for a locally owned restaurant's favorite dessert? Second, discussing the business in general is a heck of alot better than you posting a question and then the nothing..... ever.... old okie 06-06-2011, 10:31 PM Does anyone have the recipe for Leo's BBQ Strawberry-Banana Cake? I've been looking, but cant find anything so far.... Never ate at Leo's, but am very curious about the cake. Can someone describe it to me? I've found a number of recipes on cooks.com for "strawberry-banana" cake, and some sounded good, but there were vast differences in the recipes; I'd hate to do a "trial and error" because there were too many of them. I'm curious about the general composition, i.e., were the strawberries & bananas IN the cake, between layers, or on top of it, etc., since several of you mentioned you liked it; might be fun to try. Can anyone describe it? Thanks. Pete 06-06-2011, 10:41 PM The cake is yellow-ish and two layers, with bananas and strawberries on top (and bananas between the layers): http://journalrecord.com/files/2010/03/tom-walls-leo-bbq-03-22-10.jpg http://static.gowalla.com/photos/408054_high_res_320x480.jpg See more details starting about 4:25 on this video: dz3olZs0Ku0 jstaylor62 06-07-2011, 10:04 AM I can always count on Pete to help out ;) The pic of a slice on a plate almost makes it look like a pound cake. But it is much, much lighter than a pound cake...the frosting between the layers is light as well...I dont think it has much butter...its more like a whipped cream consistentcy... Pete 06-07-2011, 10:11 AM As I recall, the cake is homemade yellow cake -- perhaps with some strawberry/banana flavor in the mix. I'm sure the icing (more like a glaze) is made with powdered sugar and a bit of butter and milk. It's similar to what you find on many bundt cakes. They drizzle the glaze/icing over the fruit on top which is what makes the strawberries and bananas so tasty. That, and serving the cake warm! istillhatepeas 01-25-2012, 08:47 PM Does anyone know the story on Leo's BBQ. Are they open? I've called and no answer. Also, I've read on Urbanspoon that they moved locations? bluedogok 01-25-2012, 09:06 PM The last time that I tried to go there (last spring) the downtown location was closed but the 36th & Kelly location was supposed to have reopened. I never did make it out there though. swilki 01-25-2012, 09:45 PM I was just at the 36th and Kelly location last week.....still have great bbq. Don't know about the downtown location though. istillhatepeas 01-26-2012, 03:55 AM Thanks! I'll try the 36th and Kelly location. I'm trying to secure one of those cakes for a friend's bday. BBatesokc 01-26-2012, 05:51 AM Downtown has been closed for awhile. Actually, appears for several months people were living in the restaurant. They claimed they were trying to reopen the downtown location as a steak restaurant - don't know how realistic that is (have my doubts). OSUPeterson 01-26-2012, 09:29 AM I thought the downtown location was closed due to tax issues (non-payment I think?). BBatesokc 01-26-2012, 03:43 PM I thought the downtown location was closed due to tax issues (non-payment I think?). If I remember correctly, that was the original reason - as there was an official notice posted on their door back then. They've always suffered from cash flow issues. I'm actually shocked the downtown building could pass inspection if it tried to reopen. Spartan 02-04-2012, 08:59 PM Downtown has been closed for awhile. Actually, appears for several months people were living in the restaurant. They claimed they were trying to reopen the downtown location as a steak restaurant - don't know how realistic that is (have my doubts). Well if they're living there, probably not very realistic. BBatesokc 02-05-2012, 01:30 PM Well if they're living there, probably not very realistic. It appeared 4-6 people were living there for many months - however, as of late, I have not seen the signs of life inside that I used to when I'd arrive at the downtown Y at 5:30am. So, I'm thinking it was a temporary thing. Maybe family or something. Brett 12-09-2015, 04:58 AM Fire at Leo's BBQ. Fortunately, it was small and self-contained. KFOR's story and video are linked below. Leo?s Barbecue on fire in northeast Oklahoma City | KFOR.com (http://kfor.com/2015/12/08/leos-barbecue-on-fire-in-northeast-oklahoma-city/) Roger S 12-09-2015, 08:01 AM Ok... the last sentence in that article totally left me scratching my head.... Smoke on the walls at Leo's can hardly be considered damage. |
