So you just go around message board to message board to drum up support for your planned class action lawsuit you want to do? Essentially using these message boards but contributing near zero to the community itself. If you want to use this site for your apparent agenda, you think you would at least be respectful and compensate Pete for using his site to push your agenda. Even then though, this thread might be better off in the Politics section since the entire basis of this thread is to put together a lawsuit to legislate through the courts.

So are you positioning yourself as the almighty Mr Censor? Do you imagine you can decide who is writing what and where?
Look at the title of this forum and stay away if you don't like it. Nobody asks you to read and even less to write about "2012 and trains still have to blow horns" .
In 2011 someone else created this blog and I continued in 2012. I sincerely hope you realize that the world is larger than the OKC environment. This train honking pollution is bothering people allover the USA.

Agree: not a rr exec but the bureaucratic (bored 'crat) FRA (Federal Railroad Administration) created and now imposes the trains to honk and create noise pollution day and night. "Safety reasons" are the almighty words and probably this noise avoids a couple of car-train collisions. But nobody calculated the health effects on the large population disturbed in their sleep by this honking noise. Did you see the recently published statistics that the life expectancy in the US is almost the lowest in the industrialized countries?

Yes, a good night's rest is good for your health. Waking up by noise several times night after night, year after year will have a negative effect on your health and shorten your life.

Perhaps our friend from Kansas City is simply suffering from "PatcheSyndrome" . . .
you know . . . "down by the river that flows by the coalyard" . . . (coalyards naturally imply trains, don't they?)

Or just maybe it is related to that, [as yet Unlabeled]Syndrome based upon that song about trying to beat a train to a railroad crossing (without positive results) or the affirmation of the wisdom involved not doing that whether or not the train is blowing its whistle.

If I lived in or near Kansas City I would be much more concerned about sub-standard Interstate "improvements" that allow entire sections of off ramps to collapse . . . like over there near the I-Whatever and Highway 71 South exchange. Just past those HUGE railyards (across "the street" from those "mystery storage mines." =)

That and the decline in property values/the feeling of "security" once you start south on Prospect Ave. just south of the intersection of "12th Street and Vine" (near the home of Arthur Bryant's BBQ).

I hear they now have phone app car alarms that sound like train horns.
The fun part is they add to the confusion!

Instead of a "road trip" . . .
How about . . . a TRAIN! trip . . .
a railroad journey with complimentary earplugs!

the earplugs could be programmed to say:
"you are right about the hazards of train whistles . . .
"you are correct about the damage done . . .
"you are a visionary both ahead of and behind his time simultaneously!
"wouldn't Bose Headphones work better than these?
"of course they would.
"and you are smart enough to realize that is true!
"not to mention good-looking."

(by an ironic twist of fate,
the local train is now sounding its horn
in the name of safety
for motorists and pedestrians
about a mile away.)

Children, children .... what are you loosing your time here!

Let's go back to the subject:

The loud repetitive train honking noise (for each crossing) is a new rule, recently introduced by the FRA (Federal Railroad Administration)
Just a few years ago (around 2008-2009) this rule became enforced by the FRA.
The result is that you and millions of other citizens are now forced to "enjoy" this "romantic" honking pollution day and night.
No safety improvement & Huge additional train noise pollution.
Congratulations FRA!

torea, I've lived most of my days on this blue marble a mile or less from an active line, way less at times. I've never moved into a place only to discover afterwards I was near an active track. I'm not the brightest crayon in the box, but I dang sure ain't the dullest either. A set of tracks would be difficult to miss, even if I were hard of hearing, and I'm not (though my lovely might disagree with me a touch on that point.) No one forces living near trains on me. I simply don't object to the various sounds of trains. Quite the contrary. I hope someday you can come to peace with trains as well, or at least be gifted appropriate earplugs or a discount on moving somewhere far removed from an active track.

torea
06-25-2012, 06:11 PM
I would agree with you if trains made always that honking noise.
But the FRA introduced the final version of the train horn honking rules in 2005 and started to enforce these rules in 2008.

So everyone who choose the location of his house nearby a railroad more than 4 years ago got a nice increased noise pollution present from this Federal Railroad Administration: 4 times honking day and night for every crossing.

I call this a typical example of a useless bureaucratic administration, subject to severe reorganization or disappearance - very soon we will need many more saving to pay back the trillions of federal debt!

torea
06-25-2012, 06:58 PM
Going further on your valid remark: since 2008 most people choose houses far away from railroads. In this way the FRA honking rules houses reduces the value of houses nearby railroads.

A nice big class action supported by a few 10,000 of these home owners might help to convince the FRA to do something about these useless noise pollution honking rules.

Not Harry Potter my friend, but Pot smoke must trouble your brains.

And airplanes became more and more silent. Nobody disputes the sound of plane engines (nor train engines btw)
Just imagine a federal administration imposing planes to make double the noise everywhere they fly ... or cars to honk 4 times before passing intersections (even when green light).

There are some intersections where cars honking almost should be required. :) Of course I think it is also technically the law to honk when passing a bicycle. /shrug

But you brought an excellent idea to create a new "Federal Bike Agency" (FBA):
Lets ask this agency to impose new rules to install horns on this ever increasing number of bicycles.
And since they are vulnerable we will make them honk ALL the time day and night.

I don't see any link between jet engine noise and train horns honking. You might need to create a "freedom noises destiny" blog where you could applaud and dream about the noises produced by jet engines, bombs, guns, explosions, firework, etc......

I would think a Federal agency (funded by your and my taxes) is interested in the result of the rules and regulations they invent in their bureaucratic offices.

The result of the new FRA horn blowing & honking rule is catastrophic and forces every train to create a huge amount of noise pollution everywhere in the USA (not only in Kansas).

No kidding ... please don't call the trains "alleged"!

The FRA has published these rules to force trains to honk minimum 4 times per crossing.

Just a suggestion for railroad companies (and who knows also for the FRA): some of the older train engines make a huge noise (comparable with the older airplane engines).
Maybe some investments (or FRA rules?) could increase the number of new engines making not only less noise but also using less fuel. (Airliners have done or are doing the same)
