venture 10-30-2011, 12:33 PM BCS components are starting to come out...some things to keep in mind about BCS title hopes.
OSU - just needs to win out at this point. Any loss going into November will end chances for the most part.
OU - Needs to win out obviously. Stanford & Oregon play in two weeks. Stanford needs to lose that. I think we can jump/stay ahead of Oregon based on the remaining schedule. LSU/Bama play this coming weekend. Loser should drop to 6 through 8, behind OU. We need OSU to win until Bedlam. Win over #2 is better than #9 or whatever a 1 loss OSU would be. Boise State has to lose...and TCU is about the best shot for it to happen in 2 weeks.
The path of OSU to get to the title game is definitely easier and they are playing great football right now. Their defense is still a little soft which might become an issue. OU is definitely at a disadvantage. If they play like they did at KSU the rest of the season, they have a shot at making it to the title game. If they play like they did against Missouri and Tech they could lose another game or two.
Side note...Boise State could really have a shot at getting into the title game. Crazy I know.

I hope OU and OSU win the rest of their games before meeting. Epic bedlam! Even if its not as epic as two undefeated teams meeting.
I hope Boise State goes to the NC game and plays either LSU or Alabama.....

Glad you see my point. Lol
dankrutka 10-30-2011, 05:15 PM I actually think if OU wins out they will pass Boise State because of their weak schedule. OU's tough remaining schedule plus having the opportunity for a high quality win the last weekend of the season, could mean OU is in decent shape. Every game Boise plays hurts them in the computers really bad. Every season they start out high and fall further and further as the season progresses and their schedule strength drops.
So, OU could theoretically get into the title game if they win out impressively enough to stay in front of a 1-loss Oregon and Alabama-LSU loser, but they need Stanford to lose to either Oregon, Notre Dame, or in PAC-12 championship. It is crazy to think that OU could (not for sure though) be one upset of Stanford away from getting back in the title game.

ljbab728 10-30-2011, 10:10 PM It's obvious that OSU is currently in great shape. The computers love them. OU is in very good shape and getting good computer rankings considering what happened against Texas Tech. They really just need Stanford to lose and hope they can jump the loser of the LSU - Alabama game.

Just in that scenario they could be ranked #4 in a few weeks.
venture 10-31-2011, 01:06 AM Yeah OU could be #4 in a week or two. Boise is losing ground in the computers as their strength of schedule weakens. Sucks for them being in a mid major conference, but that is how it works. The thing I am most concerned about is how far the loser of Bama/LSU drops. The media love fest of the SEC could very well keep a 1-loss LSU or Bama ahead of the others. Is it right? Probably not. The biggest thing is could people really believe Boise can beat either of them. If not, can they really rank Boise ahead of them then.

You're right to be concerned about the media's SEC love. The computers don't have that love, thank goodness. The winner of the OU - OSU game will still get a great computer boost if they win out despite what happens in the SEC. I also think that most of the media wouldn't actually prefer a rematch in the national title game.
The computers love Oklahoma State, they're ranked #1 in all but one computer.
venture 11-06-2011, 02:18 PM Well what many thought would happen, appears will. Alabama is projected to only fall to 4th in the BCS after being ranked 4th in the Coaches poll. Alabama is projected to be 3rd in the computers.
LSU is overall in the human polls, but #2 in the computers. OSU is #1 in the computers.
So what this could mean? Even beating OSU, OU may not get into the BCS title game. Stanford obviously still needs to lose. They do have a good chance of jumping Boise State though. Alabama should take a hit in the computers when they play Georgia Southern in a couple weeks.

That's definately what it looks like, but maybe LSU will lose so that will move Bama to #1 and OU to #2.
Hawk405359 11-06-2011, 03:47 PM There are situations that'd allow Alabama to go back to number 2. They might even jump other undefeated teams with how hard the SEC is. We won't really know how all the algorithms will play out until the end of the season, but Alabama is definitely still in the title hunt.
dcsooner 11-06-2011, 06:46 PM The voters know what most Oklahomans refuse to admit, that both OU and OSU are not talented enough or strong enough defensively to compete with LSU or Ala. Anyone who truly believes OU or OSU would beat or even compete evenly with those two or even Stanford is drinking the cool-aid. We have seen all too often a good OU team in the Big 12 get killed when scheduled against USC,LSU, BoiseState, even WVU.When OU has a legitimate NC contender they may lose a game but not to TT.
venture 11-06-2011, 07:43 PM Yeah, there is definitely going to be a major push for an all SEC title game now. Bama only fell to...3.

Disagree. First, both could beat Stanford. Stanford has beat zero good teams this season. Stanford is good and would play OU and OSU pretty evenly, but both could beat them. Stanford struggled with maybe the worst BCS conference team this week in Oregon State. Secondly, OU could definitely compete with LSU and Bama. I wouldn't pick them to win, but they could compete and if they played an A+ game, beat them. Neither of those teams have great offenses (albeit great Ds).

You could be right but it's happened before. In 1975 OU lost to an unranked Kansas team 23 - 3 with only two more games left in the regular season and then still came back to win the national championship.

Talk about getting kicked by the Big East. They are now talking to BYU and SDSU. Both of whom have had some level of talks with the Big 12 in the past. Not that they were the top pick of the crop of potential schools, but at least the Big East isn't going to sit by.
Big 12 really needs to start pushing forward with additional schools. They've been considerably quiet recently, so many there is something going on in the background. I hope.

It's a sad day when the Big East can "rebound" better and faster than the Big XII can.

venture 11-13-2011, 01:40 PM BCS projections for today, which might be a little off, aren't that far from the expected line up.

The interesting thing here is LSU has already played Alabama and Oregon, so the chances of a rematch in the title game are increasing. Oklahoma State controls its destiny. Oklahoma is probably going to need some help, even with a win over OSU. Of course if Arkansas beats LSU, they may jump an OU that beats OSU. Alabama is almost certain to win out now. Not sure how the tie breaker works in the SEC to decide who from the division goes to the conference title game, but Bama would obviously be ranked higher in the BCS. Oregon still has two tough games to go. USC has a chance to give them a second loss and Oregon State is normally a close game.
For Oklahoma that loss to Texas Tech is going to sting like a no tomorrow. They lost focus for the night and gave it away. At the very least though they should get a good bowl game. Right now it looks like Fiesta is a lock. If OSU wins the game, they go to the BCS title game and OU goes to the Fiesta as the Big 12 rep. If OSU loses the game, OU wins the Big 12 title and goes to the Fiesta as the Big 12 rep...unless they can manage to jump to 2nd. Not a bad position to be in to be almost guaranteed a BCS bowl.
As far as any Non-AQ team getting into the BCS this year, obviously Boise was likely until TCU kicked them in the teeth. If TCU wins out, they win their conference and Boise gets forced to mid-major bowl their conference has an agreement with. If TCU loses once and Boise wins out, Boise wins their conference and will likely get a BCS slot. If Boise doesn't get an BCS slot, Houston looks like they have a great chance of getting one.
Still a lot of moving parts, but if I was an OU fan at this point I would think booking tickets to Arizona almost seems to be a lock now.
OMG Oregon is ahead of Oklahoma!! The NCAA set this up! They're against OU, I just know it!!!!!

Hopefully there won't be another ouch of a sting along the way.
What's the chances that we play Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl again?
venture 11-13-2011, 03:25 PM What's the chances that we play Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl again?
Depends in TCU wins out. If they do...zero. Non-AQ schools MUST win their conference championship to be considered.

I hope.
That's a whole lot of distance between BYU, SDSU and the Big East.

I would not be hurt to see them win Bedlam just to get them into the BCS title game for the Big 12. It does nothing to OU's post season play at this point.
dmoor82 11-13-2011, 08:23 PM This Sooner fan would not mind seeing OSU playing for a NC either!
Add me to the list. Boomers Sooner/Go Pokes!

Thunder 11-13-2011, 09:20 PM Alabama should be ranked lower than OU. I'm not sure how that got cheated. OU better terminate OSU on Grand Bedlam Day. USC should terminate Oregon extremely easily. OU should terminate OSU, as I've already said. That puts LSU, Alabama, and OU in a trio fight... Similar to a few years ago when OU was robbed the chance to play the final game. Something tells me that its going to happen again...
Hawk405359 11-13-2011, 09:42 PM You know, just because you know the word "cheat" doesn't mean everything you label with it is true. In fact, it's pretty much lost all meaning there.
Alabama is ahead of OU because they lost to an undefeated team that was, and is, number one in the nation, by three points. OU lost to an unranked team that now has 5 losses. The only advantage OU has over Alabama right now is that Alabama is in the SEC, and voters are going to be wary of having two SEC teams in the title games if OU won out.
Thunder 11-13-2011, 11:07 PM I wasn't thinking of Alabama being in the SEC along with LSU. lol
Does the computers still figure in past games or do they all only figure in the day's games each new ranking?
venture 11-13-2011, 11:09 PM The entire season of all teams are considered.
Thunder 11-13-2011, 11:11 PM The entire season of all teams are considered.
So, when Texas Tech keep losing games AFTER they defeated OU will keep hurting OU more and more?
Hawk405359 11-13-2011, 11:24 PM That's how strength of schedule works, the entire season is what's important, not just the one game.
The inverse is true too as well. If you beat a team early, and that team rebounds and gets to be highly ranked, it helps you more.
So, when Texas Tech keep losing games AFTER they defeated OU will keep hurting OU more and more?
This is when I like you the most, Thunder, when you're making logical points.
And yes, the more Texas Tech loses the worse it makes us look and the more it hurts us.

Sweetie, I don't know what is worse... Texas Tech losing or OSU losing. LOL!!! I think in that case, it was best for Texas Tech to lose, because it keeps OSU very high up there, which is a gift-wrapped present with a bow on top for OU to rip apart. ;-)

ljbab728 11-14-2011, 01:18 AM This is an interesting excerpt from Stewart Mandel's SI column.
The "which rematch?" debate may be moot since Alabama already sits above Oregon in both the polls and computers, though the Ducks face another ranked foe next week when No. 18 USC (8-2) visits Eugene. 'Bama has Georgia Southern next week, then the Iron Bowl against reeling Auburn (6-4). The Ducks will also get an additional game -- the Pac-12 championship -- if they keep winning. But will it be enough?
"Not likely, unless the voters decide to [elevate Oregon]," said CollegeBCS.com analyst Jerry Palm. "They'd have to change their mind. Alabama is going to be a better computer team at 11-1 than Oregon even at 12-1. I think if you seen any voter movement, it would be for Oklahoma."
Ah yes, the Sooners. No. 5 Oklahoma is perhaps the only other contender that could prevent a rematch, though it's unclear whether the Sooners would be any more popular. Beating 11-0 Oklahoma State on the road on the final night of the season would be an incredibly persuasive last impression, and Bob Stoops would undoubtedly come equipped with talking points to the postgame press conference. Detractors: You lost at home to Texas Tech. Stoops: We beat three ranked teams on the road (Florida State, Kansas State and the Cowboys) and finished first in what every computer ranking says is the toughest conference.
"If Oklahoma wins on that last day, beating the No. 2 team in the country, I don't think people will care that they lost to Texas Tech," said Palm. "I think they'll care they haven't played LSU."

venture 11-20-2011, 09:43 PM Well...it could have been MUCH worse.
Here are the FULL rankings. Yes it is a long list. USC and now Miami-Florida are not eligible to go to bowls. USC has the NCAA sanctions on them prohibiting post season play. Miami self instituted today a ban on post season play. Hence why they carry rank 999.

venture 11-20-2011, 10:02 PM Based on this. OSU still has a shot at the title. However, I think it has to go down this road...
LSU must beat Arkansas.
Auburn must beat Alabama.
I don't think a 1 loss LSU is going to drop below 3rd.
Roadhawg 11-21-2011, 08:10 AM I don't see how OK can still be in the top 10 in the BCS after two losses http://www.sturgis.com/messageboard/images/smilies/shrug.gif
