Sad to see that REM is throwing in the towel. I was hoping that with the release of the forthcoming compilation that there would be a tour in support. It stinks that the fans don't get one last chance to see them live.

R.E.M. is the only one of my favorite bands I never saw live.

Hopefully they will reunite and tour at some point down the road.

The thread name made me think they had gotten a sponsorship from Adidas. :-P

Ahem, Pete, you know how to remove double posts, doncha? ;-)

I saw them on 4 different tours. Fell in love with them when I was just 14 years old. You could see this coming but it's still sad. However, I'm thankful that the band I chose as my favorite way back in the 80's stuck around for all those years.

Hopefully all FOUR of the original members will reunite one last time down the road.

Best line I've heard regarding R.E.M.:
(c/o That NPR Quiz Show on Sunday Morning):

"R.E.M. just announced their breakup, causing many people to wonder, 'Is R.E.M. still around?'"

(I'm still bummed out about the realization that Ian Anderson's real name wasn't "Jethro Tull" . . .
and that Frank Zappa wasn't really "Reuben" of "The Jets" fame. =)

But Paul Simon will be playing at local Indian Casino so I guess all is well with the world.
