pearlbluevtx 07-28-2011, 09:31 PM Hi-
doing some cupcake research and taking the family out for a cupcake adventure.
Trying to visit as many cupcake joints and taste test all of the cupcakes ...
So far, here's my list of cupcake joints:
sara saras
cuppies & joe
gigis
Pinkitzel
Ruth's Sweet Justice
Cupcakes 2 go go
OTHERS??? This is going to be a TASTE TEST for us so we want as many good ones & shops as possible.
More IDEAS? THANKS
progressiveboy 07-28-2011, 09:48 PM Well if your "really up for an adventure" and want to take a road trip may I suggest "Sprinkles" Cupcakes in Dallas located at Preston Road and Northwest Highway in a shopping center called Preston Center.
JayhawkTransplant 07-28-2011, 09:49 PM I don't know of any more places, but be sure to come back to this thread and post your ratings of each place!

BBatesokc 07-29-2011, 08:18 AM Cafe 501 has a few varieties and the chocolate is one of my favorite in town.
RadicalModerate 07-29-2011, 09:03 AM Valerie's (on N. May up around Britton or Hefner).
Superb.
No: Beyond Superb.
Edited to Add: Here is a link to their website:
http://www.valeriescookies.com/index.html
You will note that they mainly--perhaps exclusively--talk about their cookies.
However, they also make some of the best cupcakes I have ever tasted.
(And I've tasted a cupcake or two . . . truckloads. =)
Urban Pioneer 07-29-2011, 12:05 PM The best Red Velvet cupcake is in Edmond on 2nd street, the Red Velvet Bakery.
They have the best, most dense Red Velvet and Cream Cheese Icing. It is worth the trek up there for it. No one else has been comparable that I have tried with the GF.
Jesseda 07-29-2011, 12:58 PM The cupcake lounge in moore is good, i just had there german chocolate cupcake last night mmmmmmmmm.
AFwife04 07-30-2011, 08:24 AM I have tried Sara Sara and I was not impressed. I thought the cake was a bit dry and the icing was not good. I rather like Cupcakes to gogo. I have tried several cupcakes and they are not dry. However, I found that some of the cake flavors are kind of unremarkable. I am a frosting person and this is where Cupcakes to gogo shines. They are generous with the frosting and it tastes pretty good. They have one chocolate peanut butter cupcake that is to die for! I am not sure of the name, but it is the one with a slice of peanut butter cup on top. It has chocolate cake, a peanut butter ganache topped with dark chocolate frosting. It is my absolute favorite!
roci28 07-30-2011, 11:43 AM There is a place called Green Goodies by Tiffany on Western in Nichols Hills that is pretty small and mostly organic I believe. I prefer Cuppies to this place, but I haven't seen it mentioned on your list yet.
metro 07-30-2011, 10:03 PM Good call, green goodies is very good! Mch better than Cuppies IMO

That reminds about when I was driving through the parking lot today in the shopping center on the SW corner of NW Expressway and Rockwell. I noticed some kind of new food place getting ready to open that had a name similar to that. I wasn't looking that close and just noticed it quickly. Anyone know if it might be a branch location?
pearlbluevtx 08-01-2011, 11:36 AM and the overall winner was:
GiGi's - off North May in OKC
kid's favorites - Pinkitzels in Edmond
Tried to taste test a vanilla/vanilla icing/cake at all places (if available) for the main testing.
with several doing the taste test (parents + kids), lots of judging was very personal in nature. For instance, parents & kids LOVED Pinkitzel's store ... but parents didn't like cupcakes at all & kids loved them. Parents differed on Sara Saras ... Mom loved the cupcake, Dad hated it (Dad loved the 'key-lime' cupcake which helped Sara Sara's score)
Ranking like this for just taste:
(1) GiGis
(2) Ingrids + Cuppies/Joes + Cupcake Lounge + Cupcake to go go
(3) Sara Sara + Jemz + Pinkitzel
Our final list *that we taste tested* was:
jemz, norman
cupcake lounge, moore
sara sara - downtown/midtown
cuppies & joe - 23rd st, okc
Ingrid's Kitchen - 36th/Penn, okc
gigi's, N May by quail, okc
cupcakes to go go, edmond
pinkitzel, edmond
Criteria/Questions we asked were as follows:
(1) how was store, people etc?
(2) presentation of cupcakes?
(3) icing - look and taste?
(4) cake - look and taste?
(5) overall
Our complete list of cupcake places was:
norman
jemz cupcakes - 2201 W. Main, Sweet 200, Norman, OK 73069

the cupcake lounge - moore

okcisok 08-01-2011, 12:40 PM Thanks for sharing your results. What a fun family quest!
No physical location, but Luxy in Norman, is my hands down favorite in the metro. She sets up at the Norman Farmers market every Saturday, and often at Roller Derby bouts. She makes cupcakes with savory ingredients as well as sweet. I mean, pancake with maple frosting with DELICIOUS bacon, Guinness beer cake with irish cream frosting, green tea cake, smores with graham cracker cake and fresh torched home made marshmallow. Really from a culinary stand point they are far better than any shop's cakes I've had. They're totally AWESOME...

I agree Luxy is more unique, did you know Sara Sara has a maple flavor, as well as a bacon egg and cheese with sour cream adn chive topping?
betts 08-02-2011, 01:52 PM What seems apparent to me, from the results above, is that different people like different types of cupcakes. There is enough difference between the different types to make it difficult for a small group to choose. I haven't been up to GiGi's, because I rarely go north of 63rd St. I'm not sure it's worth the trek for a cupcake. In the southern group, I like Sara Sara, but I've never had their vanilla cupcake. I like the German chocolate, coconut and Crimson and Cream cupcakes there.
Proud Daddy 08-11-2011, 11:29 AM Well if your "really up for an adventure" and want to take a road trip may I suggest "Sprinkles" Cupcakes in Dallas located at Preston Road and Northwest Highway in a shopping center called Preston Center.
I have to agree with trying out Sprinkles. That place has ruined me on any local cupcake places because IMO none of them can touch it. I wish they would open one here, but for now I either have to make the three and a half hour trek to Dallas or wait for the Sprinklesmobile to visit OKC again. I still have some of these places to try, so maybe one of them will change my mind.
Dustin 08-12-2011, 09:10 PM Green Goodies is the best IMO! Love that place!
FYI, Green Goodies is moving to Classen Curve.

I still have some of these places to try, so maybe one of them will change my mind. Perhaps they will open up a shop in OKC. The reason being one of the owners is originally from OKC, he either went to Heritage Hall or Casady and I believe he still has family in OKC.

That's the same logic I have been using to bring a Sprinkles to OKC. I know if you go on their website they have an area where you can vote for future Sprinkles sites and Oklahoma City is in the list (and I have voted for it with every email address I can!). It seems they are in no hurry to expand though and they are mainly focusing on really large metro areas with recent openings in Chicago and New York City. I guess we will just have to wait our turn!
betts 08-15-2011, 03:04 PM He went to Casady. His name is Charles Nelson.

BG918 11-11-2011, 08:52 AM Also in Norman is Crimson & Whipped Cream located on White between University and Buchanan in Campus Corner. I've been once and I liked the cupcakes. The coffee is also really good there if you're looking for an alternative to Starbucks at OU.
