OKC to get massive House of Sport
The retail boom continues in Oklahoma City as plans have been filed for a huge new Dick’s House of Sport.
http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/dicks062323a.jpg
House of Sport is a completely new concept by Dick’s Sporting Goods and will be more than twice the size of its existing stores, with two levels and 115,000 square feet.
The new store will be located on N. Pennsylvania just south of Memorial Road/Kilpatrick Turnpike.
There is an existing Dick’s at 14200 N. Penn and it’s expected that location will close when House of Sport opens for business.
From a press release: “DICK’S House of Sport explores the future of retail through multi-sport experiences inside and outside the store, broad integration with the community, elevated customer service and enhanced technology. The store features a 17,000-square-foot outdoor turf field and running track, a rock-climbing wall, a batting cage with HitTrax™ technology, golf hitting bays with TrackMan™ simulators, a putting green, the company’s first-ever “House of Cleats” that will seasonally rotate product, a health and wellness destination to help customers with recovery and well-being, and a consolidated service area for breaking in gloves, stringing lacrosse sticks and building/repairing bikes.”
The new OKC store will be one of the first of the new larger Dick’s in the country.

stlokc 06-25-2023, 08:29 AM I mean sure, why not? It just means there will be a huge vacant big box six blocks away. Would have preferred them to remodel their current store but maybe that’s hard to do. It’s the “throw away retail” culture. But having one is better than not having one, I suppose.
mgharfeh 06-25-2023, 08:39 AM So many empty spaces along memorial now. Can we please get a Wholefoods or Trader Joe’s in one of them??
chssooner 06-25-2023, 09:35 AM This is great! I love the House of Sport stores! I don't think there was enough space at the store .5 miles north to renovate and add 50,000 sq. feet. Either way, this is a great investment in the city by Dick's.
Every time I go by the Dick's on Reno/3rd street there are usually less than 10 cars in their parking lot . I often wonder how they make enough to pay the staff and the building overhead. I've been in there once just to look around and didn't buy anything.
Bowser214 06-25-2023, 10:39 AM OHhh the traffic is just going to be awful complain complain whine whine whine lol lol lol:Smiley122

nah. believe that was slated to be north of memorial, east of penn, and west of the North Church.
chssooner 06-25-2023, 11:54 AM Wasn't that lot a proposed WinCo that never got developed?
Yes it was.
Not sure what April is referring to, but yes, WinCo was supposed to go here.

Would have really liked the Winco. It would be nice to see a grocery store move into the "old" Dick's space north of Memorial. That shopping center is fairly new in the Quail Springs of things, only about 10 years old. Wouldn't be surprised if JackBe aggressively expands to get the apartment crowd at Penn and Memorial in this space.
You could also see a TJ Maxx in this spot with Marshalls and Ross near by to complete the trifecta of identical stores operated by the same parent company.
corwin1968 06-25-2023, 12:10 PM Pretty cool concept. I hope that this, along with the other major development happening in the area, will spur some real bicycling infrastructure in this part of town.
Swake 06-25-2023, 04:39 PM This store looks just like one from the old Galyan's chain that Dick's bought out and closed some 20 years ago. Back to the future.

The parking lots on Memorial are too big for a Trader Joe's.
OkieinGeorgia 06-25-2023, 06:49 PM This is pretty exciting for OKC. I was recently in a Scheel's in Colorado Springs and this House of Sport seems like a direct competition response. Good for OKC, for sure.

Thank you! I was trying to remember the name of that place. I remember the one that opened at the Stonebriar Mall in Frisco, TX about the time that town got too big for me, but couldn't recall the name. That's EXACTLY what this reminds me of.

lol this right here
jedicurt 06-26-2023, 11:00 AM No. They serve different purposes. The ones in Moore and West OKC will be able to go on, and specialty needs will take them to the one on Memorial.
as long as i can go to this one to buy my street hockey sticks, then great. i have always been so mad that the current ones don't carry them, even though all the ones in dallas do.

sneakers now. skates when i was in my late 20's and early 30's
Shortsyeararound 08-28-2023, 12:53 PM I hope this gets a different Store Leader or team that cares more. The current store is a dirty disaster. I know hours cut, workers complacent, theft, etc, etc, but it comes from the Leader to below- show some pride. A clean store goes a long way. I had to go twice in the past weeks and the store is trashed and not just trashed from the day before as I saw some garbage in the same spots a week in between. Close to open- meaning you close at night so you are ready to open the next day without having to do little if any from the day before. It is tough to see as a former retail warrior because I just want to grab a trash bag and start picking it up.

Well, usually a new store concept attracts a lot of attention from upper management so hopefully, they figure out there is some weaknesses with how the current store is currently ran. I do imagine most of the existing store personal will transfer though.

I would imagine as well, but terms of the mgmt, depending on projected volume, they may bring in someone with higher volume/top tier/flagstaff experience and transfer current leadership to other stores or keep them there.
Job trailer was just ordered for House of Sports on N. Penn so things should be cranking up soon.

xa3021 10-15-2023, 05:47 PM Was driving by the other day and noticed a lot of dirt work and machinery on this lot of land again. I know pre-Covid this was to be a Winco, but that never happened. Does anyone have insight as to what this will be?
Sorry if this is posted somewhere, I looked for awhile but couldn’t find anything. Feel free to delete or redirect to another post if needed.
Bowser214 10-15-2023, 06:03 PM I think it’s where the new Dick’s House of Sports is going.
xa3021 11-18-2023, 09:57 AM I've looked and looked all over the forums but can't find anything for what is being developed at N. Penn and Highland Park Blvd. Before covid, I believed it was to be a WinCo, but nothing ever happened. Drove by and saw a lot of work going on. Does anyone have insight into what it's going to be? Sorry if this is posted somewhere, but I can't find it. Thank you!
Edit: To clarify it's directly southwest of the Del Taco off of Penn.

Construction started recently.
xa3021 11-18-2023, 10:09 AM Gotcha! Thank you for the information! After seeing your post I searched the forums and still couldn't find anything. Seems interesting, excited to have another "new" thing up this way and it's WAY better than a Winco lol ;)
oklip955 11-18-2023, 01:36 PM How about Winco taking over the old store. I dont know how large but maybe with an addition added. It could be a win win.

That would be nice, but I don't think it is likely. Based upon other threads about Winco, the reason they did not build at Penn/Memorial was the other three stores were not performing as strong as they had hoped. As other have posted, the grocery industry is extremely competitive, JackBe even pulled back on their drive-up concept at one of their three stores, and they probably operate with much lower overhead than a full size store like Winco.
Given the area though, I don't see how this would sit empty long. However, there is already plenty of retail and entertainment in close vicinity.

Getting very close. I bet they are open before the end of September.

Dick's House of Sport in Tulsa opens in April.
xa3021 10-01-2024, 10:08 AM Obviously, the "old" Dicks Sporting Goods just north of Penn and Memorial will close, but do we know if anything will happen to Golf Galaxy at Penn and Memorial? I wasn't sure if they would keep that location with the new House of Sport opening directly behind it and it's the same parent company.
Bowser214 10-01-2024, 11:07 AM Isn’t there a PGA store in that area?

Which also has a Golf USA directly behind it.
April in the Plaza 10-12-2024, 02:18 PM JDub is scheduled to attend the grand opening.
Just_Curious 10-12-2024, 08:58 PM Not sure about the grand opening. But I went to the new store on Friday. I have to say, the store is incredible. It’s massive, and the layout is extremely customer centric. They must do far more business than I’m aware of. I can’t imagine how much it takes to operate and staff a place of that scale. But I was beyond impressed from a first impression.
The massive Dick’s House of Sport has opened at 13145 N. Penn just south of the Kilpatrick Turnpike.
http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/dicks101324a.jpg
The two-level, 115,000-square-foot Oklahoma City store is the 16th location for acHouse of Sport, which the company launched in 2021. The smaller Dick’s location at 14200 N. Penn is now closed.
A field attached to the store can be used for open play, clinics, league space or as an ice rink in the winter.
There will be a formal grand opening celebration Oct 18-20 with giveaways and a softball clinic on Oct. 19th by OU softball greats Jocelyn Alo and Jayda Coleman.
There will also be appearances and autograph sessions scheduled at 6 p.m. Oct. 18 with Oklahoma City Thunder guard Jalen Williams and at noon Oct. 20 with NFL Hall of Famer and Heisman Trophy winner Barry Sanders.
Hours are 9 AM to 9 PM Monday through Saturday; 10 AM to 7 PM Sunday.

bamarsha 10-14-2024, 09:11 AM I wish I would have known it was open this weekend... I would have stopped by! Google said it was open last week, but it wasn't. That place is massive... with lots on wonderful parking spots (sorry, couldn't resist)!
It's incredibly impressive in person.
Another big addition to OKC's ever-growing retail scene.
jedicurt 10-14-2024, 11:27 AM hopefully they will carry street hockey stuff. so disappointing that none of the dicks they built have ever carried equipment for that

It was open last Wednesday. My son and I drove over to the Dick's on the north side of Memorial only to see it all closed up so we drove over to the new one and it was open.
Love it. It's not quite like Scheel's, but it'll do!
One thing I love about the place is all the available shoes. They have an incredible selection. Very impressive.
Swake 10-14-2024, 05:36 PM hopefully they will carry street hockey stuff. so disappointing that none of the dicks they built have ever carried equipment for that
They don't carry ice hockey either. They barely carry lacrosse. I know it's actually a pretty good rule in lacrosse that if Dick's carries an item, it's garbage.
bombermwc 10-16-2024, 08:45 AM Passed by the building they are opening in Tulsa at 71st and Mingo this past weekend. It looks like it's almost ready to open too.
I just hope that their prices are a bit more competitive in this big space. The ground floor doesn't look that much different from a regular Dick's, but i guess having the second floor makes it twice the size. I'll have to wait and look once i'm in there, but it looks above like a lot of that extra space is taken up by fancier large displays that just take up more room rather than really getting a lot of product in there. More about the experience necessarily than the volume of products. Kind of like if Academy and Bass Pro had a baby.
The big one in i think St Louis (or maybe its Chicago, i can't remember) is impressive. It's more like Bass Pro for sports and is what I was hoping this would be. But it looks like it's like the Jr version of that unfortunately.

I saw it this afternoon, but it was flying over Top Golf and Costco. Didn't realized it had a crew, from the size of it from the ground, figured it was just a drone blimp with a big battery.

bombermwc 10-21-2024, 07:56 AM Yeah it was way down in the Moore/Norman area too.
Brett 11-04-2024, 01:58 PM First time visiting today. I'm surprised how small the women's softball section is being that OKC hosts the women's softball world series. The first floor is predominantly sports and leisure fashion and the second floor is filled with equipment and gear. I got to see the golf section associate kick out some customers using the digital driving range without paying to use it first. BTW even thought the polished concrete floor is new and shiny, there are lots of discarded wads of gum on the floor that the floor cleaning crew will not remove and clean.
Snowman 11-04-2024, 02:55 PM We are way out of season for softball, so not a surprise that section is small when few are buying gear, with most new purchases probably skewed to start of season near March.

That building was recently bought by an investment firm that specializes in properties with national credit retailers.
I suspect they already have a lease for that space, but not sure who it will be. Total Wine & More would be an obvious candidate.
