Has anyone been yet? I'm curious to how it compares to Cafe Antigua? For those not familiar, Cacao is at either NW 33rd or 34th and Classen on the west side. It is a Guatamalan Breakfast House. Antigua is at 18th and Classen.

It's cafe kacao, and what I had was very good. There are several more breakfast offerings here than at cafe Antigua. I would definitely recommend for breakfast, didn't really look at the rest of the menu though (you can see menu on urban spoon). I just have to wonder if they will cannibalize cafe Antigua with this restaurant.

Well the sign has it with a C.

It looks like a C because of the funky way the logo is stylized. Here's their website where you can see the logo.

I haven't been yet but have heard a lot of great things and will be going soon. I like it that these guys are using their website, twitter and facebook so effectively.

It was good enough for Ryan Parrott this morning

As onthestrip said, I hope it doesn't cannibalize Antigua, Antigua is the bomb and a regular stop on the local foodie scene. Just needs more business as it is still fairly slow most of the time, other than breakfast.

Cafe Kacao is a new favorite of mine, however over several lunch visits the average service time has ranged from lengthy to unacceptable. Wish I was in the area more in the evenings when I would have time to enjoy it. Anyway I highly recommend the hilachas (and most everything else on the menu).

Antigua and Kacao are related...

Kacao is the new creation of the Del Sid family, whose matriarch Veronica, and her recipes are of Cafe Antigua legend. The Del Cids had been dreaming of opening their own place as a family, and after 10 years of dreaming, we, the lucky folks of Oklahoma City are the beneficiaries. http://www.dishinanddishes.com/2011/02/28/cafe-kacao-guatemalan-food-at-its-best/

I tried it the first time last week and really enjoyed it. Fresh, homemade corn tortillas are served with everything and on par with the excellent tortiallas at Cocina Guatelinda (which is another Guatemalan favorite to check out if you've never been - 16th and Drexel). At Cafe Kacao, you can also ask for the "red tortillas" which are made with a little Guajillo Chili mixed in. Everything I had was seasoned very well. I'm heading back to Cafe Kacao again this week.

Its great, short walk from my house too, I will be back again soon.

TIKAL BREAKFAST from the breakfast menu is great, coffee is not that great, but the food is unique and tastes good.

Finally made it to Cafe Kacao for brunch and it was awesome. I've heard so many great things and finally tried it. Great Guatamalan/Central American cuisine and a fantastic brunch menu on Sundays (and maybe Saturdays too?). It's at NW 33 & Classen.

I went back this past Sunday and again it was fantastic. One of the top brunch places in OKC. Very unassuming from the outside but the Guatemalan and Honduran dishes are awesome, most of which come with plantains 9with sour cream) and beans with some type of ricotta cheese sprinkled on top. The coffee is Guatemalan and very bold, and they top off your cup multiples times. I need to try lunch sometime..

It's no ricotta, it's queso fresco. Cafe Antigua down the street is awesome as well.

I frequent both Cafe Antigua and Cafe Kacao on a regular basis. You cant go wrong with either. Now if we could only get an AMERICAN style cafe that made everything fresh from scratch...

They have great burgers. Maybe it's lame to get burgers at an ethnic joint, but they ethnicize them rather well.

Wife and I tried Cafe Kacoa for the first time this morning for Sunday brunch. Glad we got there at 10am, because by the time we left at 11am it was getting packed.

The food was great, as was the service.

The wife started with a cup of coffee (delicious), and we shared a huge glass of Cantaloupe juice (made with water as opposed to the optional milk recipe). That was some of the best juice we've ever had!
I ordered the Migallas Con Chorizo and the wife had the Spicy Tecpan.
The portions were huge, hot and very tasty. The wife felt the Tecpan was not at all 'spicy' but was still very good.
The portions were large enough that we could have easily shared a single entree and saved on cost and calories.

Prices were reasonable considering the portion size.

Can't wait to try them for lunch.

I can't imagine ever singing the praise of cantaloupe anything, but my lovely would probably agree with you and yours on the merits of such a drink.

The platter, yeah, that does looks downright yummy.

Basically everything here is great. Portions are probably way bigger than they should be, and that occasionally keeps me away at lunch on certain weekdays when I can't take a box of leftovers with me, but it's still great. I'm a regular here.

We went again this morning. Did the cantaloupe juice again and the Migallas Con Chorizo. But we decided to also try the French Toast. WOW! Excellent. Looked to have some type of cereal in the batter. So good.

FYI - the wife and I don't like Cafe Antigua, but love this place. So, if the comparison turns anyone off, I'd give Cafe Kacao a try.

There's something about those refried black beans that get me every so often...I've tried to make them myself but come nowhere close. I have a hard time ordering anything other than the thing they call 'Motuleno', a stack of tortillas, eggs, beans, avocado and salsa.

I went with my husband and son yesterday for brunch as well. I had the Motuleno just so I could compare to Cafe Antigua's version. We all agreed it was as good if not a little better than Cafe Antigua. We will probably stick with CA on Saturday and CK on Sunday.

Cafe Kacao (http://www.hcpmarionette.com/community/2013/02/08/1216/)

I unfortunately did not get to accompany my staff to the Cafe, as I was at a another school function. However, they were all very happy with the food! Who would have thought teenagers would be so adventurous? :)

i was instructed by many really good teachers, a long time ago, that the benchmark of an exceptional teacher is that he/she inspires.
not so much in regard to the proper use of punctuation, or style, or phrasing, or grammer . . .
rather that he/she/and the associated collegues (sp?) thereof for whom or with she is employed to share and inspire the joy of learning and life . . .

well . . . kudos t' ya' y'all! no kidding . . . no joke. =)

[and to Boulder Sooner too, reminding me, by posting, that: "Brevity is, InDeed, the Soul of Wit."

Ha, thanks :) We're going to The Mule this upcoming week! I mentioned it to them and then they started drooling over the menu. Even the class vegetarian was happy with it.

Oh, the student who wrote the above article is just a sophomore. I'm excited that I get to keep her for awhile!

40 years after I graduated - what I learned in HS journalism is practiced and the advisor we had is the only teacher I've kept track of to date.
Bandnerd - thank you for helping the leaders of tomorrow develop their minds today!

Aw, thanks, Lauri!

I think the hardest part about teaching journalism is breaking them of their English class writing habits. That, and breaking them of the use of the Oxford comma ;)

RadicalModerate
02-18-2013, 11:04 PM
The sun shall never set, nor even rise, nor whatever, on the rumoured demise of the Oxford comma!
(nor the Eton semicolon neither. not on my watch! it's digital!)
Jeeves! Call out the hounds! Posthaste, quickly, and a.s.a.p.!!
Infinitives are running wild, ripe, amok, and waiting to be split!

(uh . . . "the Oxford comma" IS that vestigial, punctuation mark before "and" . . . ain't it?)
(i'm not even sure about gerunds . . . past perfect tenses . . . or a whole lotta' that there stuff)

again, bandnerd: thank you for recognizing the difference between The King's English and Journalism.
(the King has been dead a long, long, long, and yet longer time.)
You are alive, well, and sharing the Joy of Learning. (for real).

While it doesn't make a case for not using the Oxford comma in journalism, I always find this graphic to be pretty funny.

I remember fondly my junior high journalism teacher. Great lady, tough as nails but fun and funny as well. My high school instructor ... not so much. He was probably a whole lot smarter than several gave him credit for, and looking back he was blessed with an insane level of patience. Must of been because absent patience some of us would never have been permitted to remain in the program throughout our high school days. Never hated the chap, but that's about as much as I can plug him.

I never took journalism in high school. It wasn't offered. I was, however, on the yearbook staff for two years. I look back at those things and laugh. They're awful! No copy, trapped white space, just a mess. I did come up with some fun photos but that was about all I knew how to do.

My adviser was an English teacher, as they so often are. My senior year, the staff was overrun with popular girls who did nothing but annoy me. In March, my adviser asked me to help another student. You see, I had finished all my work for the entire year. And I was fine with that. Senior year laziness could begin. The student she asked me to help was one of those annoying popular girls. She couldn't even crop a photo. I told the teacher that the girl's ineptitude wasn't my problem, and no, I wouldn't help her. I knew if I did, I'd end up taking on ALL the work. The adviser told me I had a bad attitude.

Props to you for doing this with your kids, but I think I'll take a high schoolers' food review with a grain of salt. Although I do love me some Cafe Kacao! Hopefully this will help lessen the trend in OKC highschoolers/college age to be more adventuresome and not think chain foods are the epitome of fine dining.

You would be surprised. This staff has happily tried BTT, Japanese food, and Gutamalen food without hesitation. Some are more adventurous than I am. Several are big proponents of supporting local restaurants and often visit those establishments instead of chain restaurants. I have also found that my band kids will eat all sorts of things, if you provide them with enough variety.

So, don't think that just because the author is a teenager, that her opinion is somehow less valid than anyone else's. This particular student eats tongue tacos and sushi like there is no tomorrow.

I don't see chorizo in the description... Isn't that the same dish you were looking for a certain type of chorizo for recently?

I see multiple items on the menu that I'm going to have to get over there and try and picadillo definitely will be one of them.

I'm ashamed to say that today was the first time I have ever eaten at Cafe Kacao.

But now that they have added dinner hours, this will be one of my favorite places.

Today for lunch I had "Frijolada: A bed of a rice and whole black beans, topped with diced tomatoes, fresh onions, cilantro, escabeche. Choices of meat are: Chimichurri chicken or Seasoned carne asada"; I had the chicken version pictured below.

The whole dish was fantastic. The chunks of chicken were nicely charred and everything else was fresh and flavorful. In fact, the little container of chimichurri sauce was delicious with a decent degree of spice. Next time I order this dish, I'll ask for an additional serving of that sauce. The meal was easily enough for two people or one with a a full serving of leftovers.

Service was prompt and helpful and the whole place was very busy. I'm not a huge breakfast person but they serve their breakfast menu all day.

You really should try their breakfast at some point, it's fantastic, we've had about 4-5 things from them, better than Cafe Antigua (semi-complicated history between them), and we were soooooooooooooo happy when they extended their breakfast hours! Their espresso drinks are very good too - had a bourbon maple latte one day...

They only offer picadillo (Cuban ground beef dish with olives and raisins served over rice with plantains) and I am going back one evening especially for that.

They have also applied for a liquor license.

Everything I saw there looked very good. Mad at myself for not going sooner.

We only went once before they extended their hours and got super-lucky with no wait, but every time afterwards that we drove by, the line was out the door. Went after they extended their hours at about 2-3 PM on a Saturday and walked right in, so mid-afternoon on a weekend is a pretty good time to go.
