View Full Version : The World's Best Skylines
KayneMo 05-15-2011, 04:01 AM http://homepages.ipact.nl/~egram/skylines.html
I think this is a pretty cool list!
It ranks skylines based on points. Points are derived from taking all of the city's buildings that are 90m or taller. You then subtract 90m from each building, and those are the points.
On this list, Oklahoma City ranks 165th in the world and (if I counted correctly) ranks 43rd in the United States with 244 points.
When Devon Tower is topped out, OKC will move up to the 32nd best skyline in the US and 131st in the world with 413 points.
Also, Tulsa ranks 116th in the world and 28th in the US with 507 points.
Kerry 05-15-2011, 08:13 AM I wish they could have found away to make density and consistancy factors. Mexico City is higher on the list at 37 than Vancouver is at 62 but never in a million years would anyone consider Mexico City to have a better skyline than Vancouver. Many of Mexico City's tall building are spread out all over the area while Vancouver's are clustered in just a few areas. Seattle is also 15 positions lower than Las Vegas, which are not even in the same league together, which indicates that the list is is skewed in favor supertalls. Maybe they should put a cap on how much each build could score - say 180 points max. He should also have included spires and antennas on the tops of the building - they are part of the skyline.
dmoor82 05-15-2011, 08:25 AM My top 5 in order:NYC,HK,Shanghai,Chicago,Dubai but The city that has the most Awesome Supertalls/skyscrapers is Shanghai IMO!

It looks like there are thousands of little pocket parks, which work well when surrounded by such amazing density.
Kerry 05-15-2011, 03:40 PM My luck I would move the Shanghai, walk out to the corner market, and forget which building I live in. I would then spend the rest of my life looking for it.
KayneMo 05-15-2011, 08:09 PM WOW! Shanghai is insanely incredible!
I want that model...

Hahaha - like losing your car in the parking lot.
Stan Silliman 05-16-2011, 10:12 AM I'd put Austin above Kansas City, Baltimore and New Orleans.

Not anymore, there is an Android app for that.

What are those two huge towers back in the back on the right and left? They must be 500 stories! (hee hee!)
Snowman 05-16-2011, 11:17 PM Looking at google maps even shanghai's sprawl looks to have more urban elements than many US cities.
Stan Silliman 05-17-2011, 10:01 AM Shanghai has 6700 buildings over 11 stories tall with over 4000 built in the last decade. That's a lot of cranes.

Those are holding up the sky.

If they were built anything like the homes built here in the US during the housing boom they will all be ghetto-fabulous in the next few years.
dmoor82 05-17-2011, 10:14 AM Chicago!North America's second best skyline and One of The Worlds best!http://www1.sulekha.com/mstore/sajita/albums/chicago/MVC-158X.JPG

kevinpate 05-17-2011, 10:25 AM dmoor82, my first thoughts on your pics were the top one looks like hell and the lower one looks like hell with neon.
I suppose I'll never be cut out for big city life. My first thoughts on the Shanghi model was I am so glad i don't live there.
swilki 05-17-2011, 01:10 PM http://sydor25.com/Pictures/Dallas_Skyline_0554.jpg
Dallas has great architecture, however IMO their downtown isn't all that dense. I was just down there this weekend and it still feels dead - much like OKC's.
dmoor82 05-17-2011, 01:19 PM ^^ I'll agree with that,here is some density for ya' here's Vancouver!http://travel.nationalgeographic.com/staticfiles/NGS/Shared/StaticFiles/Places/Images/vancouver-skyline010-vancouver-03-sw.jpg

I was in Vancouver in March - LOVED IT. Such an Amazing city, OKC could learn a lot from our Neighbors to the north.
dmoor82 05-17-2011, 01:22 PM Canada's #1 and North America's #3 skyline Toronto!http://farm1.static.flickr.com/174/419919432_b239d00646_b.jpg
dmoor82 05-17-2011, 01:24 PM Gotta love those Canadian skylines!Dense,Modern,Sustainable,I just love them, especially Calgary!
KayneMo 05-18-2011, 09:15 PM ^That's such an amazing picture of Toronto!
mugofbeer 05-18-2011, 10:16 PM Driving north from Seattle into Vancouver you can't see the downtown immediately, then you crest a hill and suddenly that beautiful skyline with the mountains is spread in front of you. It is a very pretty sight.
KayneMo 05-25-2011, 04:11 AM I bet it's a magnificent sight!
Kerry 05-25-2011, 06:28 AM Tall buildings are pretty cool and Hong Kong is one of my favorites, but I still prefer the low-rise density of London. I would post my favorite picture but it is 80 giga-pixels. Here is a link.

Kerry 05-25-2011, 06:34 AM If you just want sheer volume - check out Sao Paulo. Here is a photo but to get a proper understanding go to Google Earth and turn on 3D buildings, then check out Sao Paulo.

Spartan 05-25-2011, 07:59 AM That's not an attractive skyline nor place of any kind.

Tru dat, but for sheer volume it can't be topped.
Richard at Remax 05-25-2011, 09:40 AM one of my favorites is Frankfurt. Not many people know about it and it's very impressive

Plus my favorite building is there (Westend Strasse 1)

maestro6 05-25-2011, 04:39 PM My personal favorites are:
1. Hong Kong
2. NYC
3. Chicago
4. Shanghai
5. Vancouver
Others that I really like, in no particular order, are Toronto, Seattle, San Francisco, and Sydney, Australia.
No question that the natural settings of Hong Kong and Vancouver bump those two up. That scale-model in Shanghai really is spectacular. I was fortunate to visit it a couple of years ago, and it blew me away. There's a similar, though much smaller one along Michigan Avenue in Chicago.
dmoor82 05-25-2011, 05:31 PM Frankfurt imo is Europes best skyline, but is not one of the Worlds best imo!Impressive to say the least!http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/371/24631854.jpg
