Dustin 04-25-2011, 10:35 PM Off topic (sorry)
I'm trying to remember the name of a pizza place. It's on Memorial Rd. Either Memorial and Santa Fe or Memorial and Kelly. I can't remember the name but they had excellent pizza and fried chicken.
Larry OKC 04-26-2011, 12:14 AM There is a strip mall that has had various food places in it at Memorial/Santa Fe, but don't recall a pizza/fried chicken place there. Not sure about down on Kelly....
eataroundokc.com 04-26-2011, 08:10 AM I stopped by Joey's new location last Saturday and, I agree, it looks fantastic.
betts 04-26-2011, 06:31 PM I had lunch at Joey's today. It looks great! The booths were very comfortable, the decor very attractive and our food was excellent. We walked over from home, got to walk through the Myriad, which is also looking good, smell the food at the Arts Festival and hear some music as we strolled. All in all, a very enjoyable lunch outing.

Sicilian Pizza, just west of the tracks. They had "broasted chicken" and gyros as well the last time that I ate in there about 7 years ago.
Dustin 04-26-2011, 10:33 PM ^^ Thats it! Thanks.
sgordon77 04-27-2011, 08:44 PM Tried Joey's, I was not impressed. It was way overpriced for what it was. Service was marginal at best.
soonerguru 04-28-2011, 12:24 AM The space is great. The pizza is not. In fact, when I went last week, it was actually appreciably bad. I wish them well and I appreciate their investment in the Film District, but they need to start over in the pizza department.
Achilleslastand 04-28-2011, 12:44 AM I got a Joeys pie last year and it was merely average. If you want great pizza try papa angelos in bethany or italian jims in mustang.
betts 04-28-2011, 01:32 AM I'm going to disagree. I thought my pizza yesterday was delicious. I consider myself pretty picky where pizza is concerned and I was very impressed with the flavor. If I had a criticism, it was that the crust was a little floppy....could have been crisper, but that didn't affect flavor. My salad was good too, although not great.

There have been numerous threads here about pizza and no one ever agrees about who has the best. It's just subjective and personal preferences.

A resounding "plus one" to THAT!
That said, I look forward to trying them soon. I'd like to know some detail, though. How much is it? What made it bad, exactly?
BBatesokc 05-11-2011, 03:39 PM Ate there for lunch with 3 friends today. The new location is definately a huge improvement - easy to get to, and really nice looking. Unfortunately that's where my praise ends. As noted by others, the service and food quality are marginal at best.
We ordered 4 drinks, two salads and a thin crust XL Heap pizza. The waitress we had was clueless, we asked what kinds of salads they had and she said, "the normal kind." We asked how many the XL could feed and she said, "I don't know." we all had to order extra glasses of ice because the glasses were brought out so hot all the ice melted. The salads were brought out with the pizza and it took 25 minutes to get out food after we ordered it.
The side salads were pretty blah and the lettuce looked wilted. The pizza wasn't bad, but certainly wasn't any better than a Pizza Hut pizza. For their prices they should have fresher ingredients. The cheese on the salads was obvious packaged fake shredded cheese and the japelenos were obviously from a jar. Lastly, their idea of thin crust and ours was totally different. It was very thick in our opinion.
I'd go back if my group insisted, but it's not a destination for me.
Joe Kimball 05-12-2011, 06:29 PM That's too bad to hear, especially about the hot glasses and the waitress, to say nothing of the late salads (I HATE that) and pizza. It sounds as if even Falcone's tops them---a place from where I have no problem with individual slices of pizza, taken out to eat elsewhere.
Does anyone know the person that owns / runs Joey's?
I had a really bad experience and wanted to contact them before I shared it here.
I looked on their website and didn't see an email or anything other than a general phone #.
TIA
OKCisOK4me 07-03-2012, 06:07 PM I don't know who they are for certain except for that it's the aunt of a girl who's friends with a chick I know (totally Ferris Beulers 31 Flavors story but what can I do)...

pickles 07-03-2012, 10:05 PM The service here remains awful, even if the food is vastly better than it had been at their Classen
Location, which is admittedly setting the bar pretty low.
Since I was taught to always be positive, I will say that I absolutely love the space and the feeling of the place.
I really want them to succeed and I hope if I get in touch with the owner they will be open to feedback.
OKCisOK4me 07-04-2012, 03:14 AM Id think that they will be. Locally owned tends to respond better than a corporate locaction.
bornhere 07-04-2012, 09:03 AM I have always been a fan of Joey's, going back to when it was on Classen. It wasn't a classy-lookin' jernt back then, but I always liked their pizza.
okieinindy 07-04-2012, 09:36 AM Strangely enough we ordered in from Joeys last nite. We have never gone there to eat but most every time we have ordered from them the food has been above average for delivered food. Seems like for a while the same lady, guessing owner or manager, would answer the phone and take the to go orders. Compared to a couple other "pizza house" type places their quality I think is better than most. Granted its always a calzone and an Italian salad so cant speak to anything other than those two items. Sorry to hear the dining in experience didnt mirror the delivery. I think they will right their wrong though. Seem to be those type of people.

There is a husband and wife that run it as partner. The husband, Rusty is there quite a bit, But Chip Fudge is the primary owner. The couple actually run it. Chip also owns the building and is more of a silent partner.

I took Tuck's suggestion to mean I should contact them through Twitter, not tweet publicly.

this
Turns out you can only send a message through Twitter if they are following you, and other than making a bunch of phone calls to try and hunt down the owner (I don't even know the name) I'm just going to post what I experienced. I feel I've made more than an honest effort to provide feedback but they don't make it easy for customers to do that, so here it is.
I went to Joey's twice while in town and loved the building and space.
The first time I just had a beer while I waited to meet a friend elsewhere. Everyone was friendly and nice, but they seemed a bit clueless. One waitress was trying to train another right in front of me, and when I ordered a beer, observing aloud they had Stella on tap, they served it to me in a bottle. Nothing horrible but I had the very strong impression people there did not seem to know what they were doing.
The second time I came for a late lunch (around 1:30) and after one other person left, I was the only customer in the place.
I ordered a beer and a personal calzone. When the food came out it looked terrible; like a burnt quesadilla. It was almost completely black on top and not much better on the bottom and quite flat with very little in between the folded-over thin dough.
I should have said something right when the waitress put in on the table but she was gone before I could speak up. One forkful revealed it tasted as bad as it looked; basically burnt, completely dry and hardly any type of filling. It never, ever should have come out the kitchen that way and no respectable wait person would ever put that down in front of a customer.
I pushed it far away – the universal sign of displeasure – and waited for the waitress to return. I was facing outward and could hear the few wait staff behind me talking loudly and doing little else since I was the only one there.
After about 10 minutes without a “How's everything?” from the waitress, I knew I didn't even have time for a replacement. Fully 15 minutes after it was served, with the plate all the way on the other side of the table and almost completely untouched and now looking even worse in it's cold, awful state, the waitress asked “How we doing here?”
I showed it to her and asked if this was the manner in which their calzones are usually prepared. She muttered something about them sometimes being crispy on the edges, which was not only silly given the state of the meal but also a sure sign no remedy was going to be offered.
I told her I didn't have time for them to make me another (even though she never offered this as a possible resolution) and asked that it be removed from my bill. It was, but I was still charged for the beer without much of an apology. I left for my long afternoon meeting without having eaten all day.
Really, really a bad experience all the way around even though I went out of my way to give this place my business. The food was terrible but the way everything was handled left me with a very bad vibe.
I should also note that in my 51 years, I have only sent back one (!) other meal so that should put things in proper perspective.
Wow, I bet you would love that. Perhaps I should take to Twitter over my most recent horrible experience in one of your restaurants, and you never did anything about the last bad experience I had.
Do you seriously think I meant to post publicly? My post was directed to Pete, he totally understood to contact him in a private forum. Also, if you contacted ME about a bad experience, I would have done something to fix the problem. I always do...100% of the time!

Yep--I'll confirm that. I contacted Tuck with a problem (more of an observation) I had at one of his restaurants and he responded immediately and positively to fix it. Actually, I can't quite recall, but I think I may have posted the complaint on this forum and he contacted me on his own and was still extremely positive and understanding. That's one of the reasons I continue to frequent his restaurants.
As for Joey's Pizzeria, Pete makes an interesting observation. I've gone about 10 times and I have never had a bad experience there with food or service, but I can totally see what Pete's talking about. It always seems like the waitresses are a little bit clueless or disorganized. It's hard to explain, but I got the sense that if one thing went wrong there, then there would be a ton of things going wrong, like a house of cards. Fortunately, that hasn't happened when I've been there. I've met Rusty several times (even talked to him about this board) and he seems like a nice guy. I hope he'll work to fix the problem Pete had because that kind of thing, repeated, will kill a restaurant.
Garin 07-05-2012, 07:35 PM I have been eating at Joey's for years since they were over on Classen. I honestly think they have reall y good pizza, but i will concur that the wait staff is horrible and always has been. The second to last time i was there i took a buisness client to lunch and our waitress was a young girl and the first thing out of her mouth to us was how hungover she was cause she'd been out drinking whiskey all nite and it never got better, however the food was good. The last time i was there was during pride week which i had no clue my family ended up there and after eduring 30 minutes of same sex displays of affection and lots of interesting talking points in front of a 6 ,9 and 13 yr old. we dedcided to leave When asked why we were leaving i told the manager i had lost all respect for Joey's and would not be back ever. I will however have there pizza delivered cause i still think they have great pizza.
You don't "respect" Joey's because of the crowd there during pride week?

I don't respect when pointing out what was going on in their family resturant that they did nothing to rectify the problem. So yes i lost all respect for Joey's just because your queer doesnt give the right to be disrespectful in a public place. That's my opinion

I think the room just got a lot smaller. Way to discredit your opinions buddy.
You can feel however you want to about it, but unless they were dry humping on the pizza line, I believe they have the right to do whatever they want. The way you reacted to it was probably worse than what was actually happening.
We all make stupid comments sometimes on this board, but you should remember "Just because you can say whatever you want, doesn't mean you have to".

G.Walker 07-12-2012, 01:15 PM I love Joey's Pizzeria, and have had nothing but good experiences while eating there. I used to eat there a lot when it was over there on Classen, back when they first opened up several years ago. Back then it was only ran by a young Italian lady who just moved here, and two other people, but she was the owner. She was really nice, and always talked about how she loved Oklahoma City. Never had a bad experience, and my food was always good. My fav choice of pizza is the Heap. Nonetheless, I will continue to eat there...They are known for their pizza, that's how they started, and perfected it, so if you get anything else you are on your own...lol...

I wanted to like Joey's, but the pizza is terrible. Not a fan. If they could completely change their food and service, it would be great.
betts 07-15-2012, 07:32 AM I love their pizza. Their sauce is excellent and the thin crust is about as thin as you can get it. Again another example of different people having different tastes. I have a whole range of different types of pizzas I love, but theirs is definitely on the circuit.

Yep, I like many different types of pizzas and have various places we go to in our rotation, had them in OKC, Austin and now Denver. I still like the Sammy's style pizza and Okie-Calzone, sometimes when we are in town we will play cards and order it from Pizza House at 23rd & Ann Arbor. I also like The Nomad style pizza (and salad dressing) and wish there was a still a Shotgun Sam's style around somewhere. What we get up here in Denver is the thin at The Walnut Room in the South Broadway strip (also up in the River North area), the "mountain style pies" at BeauJo's and the Chicago style at Old Chicago. There are a few other places to try for Chicago style that we haven't been to yet, Old Chicago is based here and they are all over so it is convenient.

I had such a hard time understanding this statement. But, thankfully, I figured it out. Just to clarify... I don't own a "queer". Now, if you meant "you are queer", that's actually spelled you're not your . I'm shocked that someone with such obvious intelligence would have overlooked that.
CCOKC 07-17-2012, 11:12 PM I went a few weeks ago with low expectations but had very good food and pretty good service. When I go back I guess I will be on notice that both are spotty.
Teo9969 07-18-2012, 08:34 AM The two times I've been, food has been good. Service is in DIRE need of some direction. I get the feeling that there is no front of house manager at this establishment.
Has anyone ever been there when it's packed? If so, how did that go? I've only ever been around lunch hours and it's been pretty dead. I can't imagine with the lack of talent at the server position that this place could survive very long if it gets busy. I've not had horrible service either time, but between comments on here and my own experience, they just seem to not understand pacing and quality control, which are simply the two most important traits of a server.
MustangGT 07-18-2012, 08:57 AM Service is on the lacking side. However the food is excellent. I eat there at least twice a month and have never had a bad meal.
Larry OKC 07-18-2012, 12:23 PM generally not a good sign if a restaurant is dead around the lunch hours...that should be one of their busiest times of the day
Teo9969 07-18-2012, 01:52 PM Let me rephrase: around 3ish, just after lunch hours
king183 07-18-2012, 02:25 PM Every time I have been at lunch time (about 6 times total), it's been about 80% full. I also go there late (around 3 pm) and there will be maybe 2 other tables, which seems normal to me.
Given that they were pretty far out in front of that neighborhood (i.e. one of the first things to go in and still lots of vacant buildings and lots all around) their business seems to be pretty good.
It's only going to get much better with just the things underway on Film Row with lots more to come.
I really do want them to succeed and despite my one very bad experience will give them another try.

My apologies, I'm not going to beat you upside the head when you probably just forgot to respond to my PMs, but you don't need my business because your restaurants are wildly popular with everyone else. As for Joey's, I happen to like that place a lot, but I'll admit their service is almost as rude as Iron Starr's. But similarly, at least the food is always good enough to keep coming back, and at least at Joey's the wait staff isn't so horrible to make my grandmother cry for feeling stupid, or threaten European exchange student friends for being effeminate, or anything else I've experienced at AGE places. Being a plain looking blond blue eyed Okie at least I can still go to these restaurants I like alone without encountering any ugliness..

Please help me to understand what SR has to do with Joey's, Iron Starr in OKC or Norman, or any restaurants for that matter. Unfortunately your insult fell flat because I have no idea what you're "smartin' over."
In fact, I'd think bad restaurant service is probably a lot closer to a Gary Ridley "conspiracy" (if that's what we're calling true stories) than a SR conspiracy.

Watson410 07-23-2012, 11:45 PM I'm sorry to hear about everyone's recently bad experiences with Joey's. I eat there at least twice a month with the family. I know the owners (Husband/Wife) and they just recently had twins, so that might be why everything seems a little out of whack lately, I know that's no excuse for business to slack but I guarantee you it'll all get back in line if not better than before... My wife and I went their Friday night and they were VERY busy, they seemed to hire more staff since the last time we were there (a month ago?). So hopefully the new help will pick up some of the load. Don't let one bad experience keep you from going to a place though, not just this place... ANY PLACE!! It could have just been one of those days, who knows?!?
