View Full Version : Favorite Coney place in/near the metro?
BBatesokc 03-09-2011, 09:01 AM Saw some threads about individual coney places, but nothing ranking your favorites. The wife and I love a good coney, what are your favorite places for a coney (traditional or non-traditional)?
1. Coney Island (downtown and Capitol Hill - naturally a favorite for many people).
2. Sweets an Eats (downtown)
3. Sonic's new Chicago Dog and NY Dog (like the foot long chili cheese, but it doesn't like me).
4. Coney's-N-More (new place at SE 44 and S. I-35), pretty much identical to Coney Island, but they also have fried pickles and fresh made brownies!
BBatesokc 03-09-2011, 09:04 AM For a short time there was a place at SW 36 and S. Robinson called Mr. B's Coneys. He had Flint Michigan hot dogs. I had never tasted anything like them - very unique flavor. Anyone know of a place that serves Flint, MI dogs?
okclee 03-09-2011, 09:19 AM Okc could definitely use more unique coney and dog places in the metro, even if we have to sacrifice a tex-mex place or two.
I can't believe we don't have a quality place to get a great Chicago Dog. (I know Prohibition Room has them)
metro 03-09-2011, 10:26 AM Man the new Chicago dog at Sonic is best in metro. Also remember the BTT people are opening a gourmet coney place on 23rd just west of Classen
okclee 03-09-2011, 10:31 AM Are you serious about Sonic's Chicago dog?
Is is really good, or is it the "best in the metro" because there are no others to choose from?

Agree, love the Sonic Chicago dog. Personally though, I like a bigger dog than most places offer. Sweets and Eats has a big dog.
Had no idea about the BTT expansion into a coney place. Where can I read more info?
Also, I often get the coney special at BTT now.

Look for Mutts Amazing Dogs (or something like that) on facebook.
Im already predicting another home run with this one.
okclee 03-09-2011, 10:45 AM Are we still thinking the location will be the former "sweet tea" restaurant location on 23rd street?
I haven't seen any contractors or any type of work happening here and I drive by daily.
pbsawin 03-09-2011, 11:27 AM Believe it or not, it is my opinion that Sam's has the best hotdog in OKC. Big, juicy, steamed bun, condiments not in little packages. And it is only $1.40 incl tax.
Yes, I think Sam's uses the same food vendors as Costco and even here in L.A., Costco's dogs stand up well to the competition.
Joe Kimball 03-09-2011, 12:00 PM Have any of you had the Chicago dog at Freddy's? I think it's great. The bun is a normal one as opposed to a kaiser-type one, but the taste is all there (absent the nuclear-green relish which seems to be a prerequisite among some). More importantly—they use Vienna Beef hot dogs.
onthestrip 03-09-2011, 02:03 PM Update today from the Oklahomans food writer on Mutts.

I agree, I like the taste and size of the Sam's dog. Just wish there were more goodies to put on them and I wish they'd do it behind the counter. The MWC Sam's is always dirty where you get the relish and onions to put on yourself. Pretty much grosses us out.
RealJimbo 03-09-2011, 08:55 PM Love the new Chicago dog at Sonic. My favorite is definitely the Coney in Capitol Hill, though. Got to have at least two, with cheese, onions, mustard and a generous dash of Louisiana Hot Sauce. Their Greek spaghetti is awesome.
RealJimbo 03-09-2011, 08:56 PM BTW - Iggy's and Jake's in Edmond are also great.
redrunner 03-09-2011, 09:08 PM Take this funky matchmaker quick on Sonic's website and get a coupon for $1.00 of any premium hot dog combination.

Bigrayok 03-09-2011, 10:19 PM I like Coit's hot dogs and chili. They use Schwab wieners and chili which are among my favorites. I read an interview with Neil Diamond recently where he said he takes his mother her favorite meal every Sunday-Costco hot dogs. Does Sam's use Nathan's hot dogs? Falcone's in Bricktown has good hot dogs as a special on some days. Jason's Deli has decent hot dogs also. I used to like the smokey flavor of Harris wieners. Too bad they went out of business. Tim's Drive Inn at N.W. 50th and McArthur has good footlongs. Some of the onion burger places like Bunnys, Sid's Diner, Robert's Grill, Johnnys in El Reno, and Fat Elvis Diner have coneys with slaw that are good. A &W have ok coneys, not great. Del Rancho and Chuck House have decent chili dogs. Stake & Shake has good chili dogs. A new Stake & Shake is going in at I-40 and Rockwell.
Bigray in Ok
AFwife04 03-21-2011, 08:58 AM Interesting about the Sonic Chicago dog. It looks really yummy in the picture on the menu board, but so did the red velvet cheesecake blast and I thought that was nasty. Every time I go to Sonic I really want to try it, maybe I will next time.
Does Sam's use Nathan's hot dogs?
Up until recently both Costco & Sam's used Hebrew National.
But I believe Costco has now shifted to their own brand but I haven't noticed much difference. Not sure about Sam's.
tburn 03-21-2011, 12:20 PM You can get a great Chicago Dog with shoestring fries at Prohibition Room
$5 special on some day of the week that I can't recall now.

Pretty sure the SAMs here has been using house brand for along time. Definitely not nathans.
Soonerinfiniti 03-25-2011, 07:24 AM Big fan of Sam's hot dogs (and their ice cream cup for $1)! I believe they are Nathan's hot dogs. They sell a case of Nathan's hot dogs for $80 - always wanted to ask how many dogs that included. They quit offering onions, but now have sauerkraut - awesome! Best lunch deal in town - $3 for a hot dog, 32 oz drink and a large cup of really good ice cream!

Do they take credit/debit cards at the "grill" window? I remember a few years ago they did not... Also, do you have to be a Sam's member to eat there? I am a member but wasn't sure since it is up front.
For a Coney - I love Coney Island in downtown.
Chi Dog - Freddy's but Sonic's is good too.
Normal Dog - I like OnCue, 2 for $2.22
BBatesokc 04-07-2011, 07:59 PM Just had the coney with slaw at Sid's today for lunch. It tasted pretty good, they use a very small hot dog.
I've always been a fan of Top Dog Coneys, as an undergraduate the roomies and I went there almost every Sunday morning.
Larry OKC 04-08-2011, 05:20 AM My favorite footlong coney is Big Ed's (the last remaining location, at 122nd & N. Penn.
The Sonic ones were decent (but I always substituted sliced cheese instead of the grated stuff that tasted fake) before they came out with the new and improved one and I don't think they are better at all (haven't tried the 4 specialty ones, but my mom really liked them).
Disappointed with Freddy's ... very average taste and over priced.
Only time I get Coits is when they run a half priced special on them and unfortunately, their "brick type" chili is very greasy and doesn't agree with me.
metro 04-08-2011, 08:29 AM Larry, the new Sonic ones are nothing like the old crappy ones.
MadMonk 04-08-2011, 06:03 PM Coit's hot dogs are my favorite, but I haven't tried many of those listed here.
Larry OKC 04-09-2011, 03:22 AM Larry, the new Sonic ones are nothing like the old crappy ones.
I agree and that is part of the problem...LOL I preferred the "old crappy" footlong they had before they "improved it" the new one has an odd aftertaste to it and seems tougher. It wasn't the best but would do when I couldn't get to Big Eds. Like I said, I haven't tried their 4 smaller, specialty dogs and my mother loves those.
