I didn't know where to put this, so I apologize in advance if it's in the wrong area.

I live in Houston and there are an abundance of day laborers available. I need to hire a couple to help me do some heavy lifting/landscaping. Do you know what a fair wage would be? I speak Spanish, so that will help. I want to pay a fair price and not be taken advantage of.

I would guess about $10 an hour.

Then, perhaps a nice tip if they did a good job and worked particularly hard.

I have no doubt you could pay less than Pete suggests and find folks to do the work, but I also have no doubt Pete's suggestion is certainly not excessive for heavy lifting work.

can't say i've ever hired any myself... but my gut reaction was also around $10/hr. -M

Out here in Cali they have some organized day labor facilities, often in the parking lot of a Home Depot.

At those places, you typically pay about $10/hour.

There are temp agenicies that will provide day laborers. I think Labor Ready is one. You can usually find day laborers at the Valero station on Sheridan and Classen. They start showing up around 4:00 a.m. some days. Home Depot is a notorious location for day laborors nation wide. Their have even been movies with day laborers standing in front of Home Depot.
