View Full Version : Three Dog Night in OKC
Rhetticent 01-28-2011, 11:18 AM Does anybody remember the Three Dog Night concert in the early '70's when one of the singers (I think it was Chuck Negron) couldn't sing because of a broken nose? Seems like they tried to blame it on the police, but as later info came out about his drug problems, it seemed unlikely that it was someone's fault other than his own...
The concert in question was at the State Fair Arena. Horrid acoustics, and just two singers doing 3-part harmony.... was not a great performance on their part.
kevinpate 01-28-2011, 04:31 PM Just some old fashioned blow done
ending in a 2 part harmony
MustangGT 01-28-2011, 08:42 PM In his book Three Dog Nightmare he speaks about his foibles and troubles and as I recall he spedifically mentions OKC.
Edmond_Outsider 01-29-2011, 05:18 PM Heroin was the drug of choice in this incident.
mugofbeer 01-29-2011, 10:30 PM its too bad because he had one of the best pure singing voices in rock

I was there and you are right on all points. Also about the same time period saw Grand Funk at the Arena. Speakers stacked to the ceiling. Very loud and bad acoustics.
Chuck came out and "tried to talk" and tell everyone why he wasn't singing. He was messed up bigtime.

Well this is certainly mind blowing. I was selling heroin in Oklahoma City in 1971. I remember selling to West Bruce and Lange, Corky is still alive. And I thought all these years it was Blood Sweat and Tears that I sold to as well. Reading this certainly brings back memories. It was this member of Three dog Night that I sold to. I was with West Bruce and Lange so I knew they were real, but I never actually saw this guy in Three dog night. Since I was strung out myself I was not social and sold to a friend that sold to Three dog night. My friend wanted me to go meet with them but I passed. I'm 71 now so this was more than 50 years ago. Haven't had a drink since 1985.
stick47 12-20-2024, 07:38 AM Went up to Boston to visit my Brother in 1975. When we left the subway we saw a crowd at the Commons so went over and took in a free concert by Three Dog Night. That was a pretty wild scene!

Heck of a first post and heck of a thing to admit on a public forum. Guessing there is a statute of limitations on that.

I would assume the member that you sold to was Chuck Negron since the other two kicked him out for not being able to stay straight. I got to see them once as all three. A large number of times with Cory Wells and Danny Hutton. Now it's just Hutton but I wish him well in keeping the name alive.
I remember going to a Three Dog Night concert at the Fairgrounds Arena in probably either 69 or 70. I know it was before I was 16 and driving which would have been 71. I think I was in Jr High and took a girl from school with me as a double date with my older sister and some guy she was seeing.

From 1970; this is a bad-ass concert poster:

Bill Robertson 12-20-2024, 05:35 PM I don't remember what year I saw the three together. It wasn't 70 because I would have been 11. But the three were together until 1985. I'm thinking it was 80 or 81.

Thanks for that date. That had to have been the one I went to.

Funny you should mention that. 2 or 3 years ago the public library here in OKC had Chuck Negron's biography book on the shelf. I borrowed it and read it. What an absolutely crazy and fascinating story. The talent he had, got kicked out of 3 Dog Night, his drug use that almost killed him, all the money he wasted. His biography also said that one time while in OKC performing he was banging some chick and his dick ruptured. He said he went to a local OKC Hospital Emergency Room, and they sewed his dick back together. I laughed and laughed at that. Can you imagine a doctor and nurses in OKC back in the day that some famous singer with a famous band walked in and said "hey I ruptured my dick can you fix it?" Hilarious. l
Chuck was a hard core drug user, living on the streets with nothing. I can't imagine having that talent and money and ruining my life over drugs.
Last I heard a few years ago he was still performing some and 3 Dog Night will have nothing to do with him. How sad.
Here's some info, how terrible is this?
""""Yeah, I hadn't heard this either. I did a Google search and found this:
The candid Negron said “I think it was Miss Oklahoma and we ended up spending the night together and in the middle of the sex, it was like a hot dog splitting and you know, I found myself in the emergency room with my ***** in my hand waiting to be stitched up.”
The injury was caused by his drug use and excessive sex, and so Negron put the story in his book so others might learn from his mistakes."""""
