View Full Version : Scissortail Park
Plutonic Panda 03-22-2021, 10:30 AM I think we can all agree on the Cusak lot. No need to repeat it every time there is new picture.
This is one of those things that is hard not to repeat every time you see it. It’s just awful.
I'm hoping it won't be so obvious when you are actually in the park.
snark0leptic 03-22-2021, 12:53 PM It's almost time for the OSU-OKC Farmer's Market to kick off. Starting Saturday, April 3rd from 9am-1pm and every Saturday through the end of October.

soonerguru 03-22-2021, 01:20 PM I will never purchase another Cusack product again.

Bellaboo 03-30-2021, 03:22 PM Looks like someone is doing donuts on Eastbound I-40 ?
Canoe 03-31-2021, 08:00 AM Pete, will you call the phone number on the board for cusack's meat and find out the asking price? I wonder if we could set up a go fund me or equivalent to purchase this land and turn it over to the City. Maybe everyone over a certain amount could have thier name on a brick that is to be used in the future development of the land.
Does this idea interest anyone else on the board?
Bellaboo 03-31-2021, 08:41 AM ^^^. No
Anonymous. 03-31-2021, 10:11 AM They wanted $7MM for the entire property back in the day. That single piece adjacent the park will probably be worth that in 20 years.
soonerguru 03-31-2021, 12:33 PM The city should raise the level of the park so all the drainage settles into that one plot. Or build a giant retaining wall around it.
Canoe 03-31-2021, 01:51 PM ^^^. No
Noted.
Park absolutely heaving this morning:

This is such a great improvement from the sculpture that was originally planned.

jccouger 04-16-2021, 01:57 PM How'd they get the water so blue? Do they put dye in it? I'm not used to water in OK being anything but brown.
How'd they get the water so blue? Do they put dye in it? I'm not used to water in OK being anything but brown.
I think it's due to the angle of the sun and the fact we haven't had rain in quite a while, so no red dirt runoff.
And keep in mind the pond has a vinyl liner like a pool.
catch22 04-16-2021, 02:39 PM Even dirty water can refract blue light when viewed at the correct angle. On the surface it may not look blue because you are only seeing the surface layer of water, but viewed from above there are more opportunities for light to bounce off other water particles on its way to your eyes, each time that light taking on a more and more blue wavelength.
jstanthrnme 04-16-2021, 03:55 PM How'd they get the water so blue? Do they put dye in it? I'm not used to water in OK being anything but brown.
Yes, they dyed it blue. My understanding is that it was dyed to prevent algae blooms.
And I don't know if it was mentioned previously, but the lake was recently stocked with sunfish from the OKC Parks department.
mugofbeer 04-16-2021, 11:13 PM How'd they get the water so blue? Do they put dye in it? I'm not used to water in OK being anything but brown.
The water IS blue. They just dye it brown.

More fish for the lake!
Yesterday, Scissortail Park Rangers worked with the @OKWildlifeDept (https://twitter.com/OKWildlifeDept) who brought 400 channel catfish to Scissortail Lake.
These one-year old fish each measure about 10 inches. They join our 400 sunfish that were added to the lake in March.
There's a mildly amusing video if you click through. I found it funny, at least.
Went to the Night Market around 6:30 and it was absolutely slammed with people. Don’t think I’ve seen/been around that amount of people at once since the before pandemic started.

Great to hear! They had music as well ? was the presence of the new convention center and hotel impressive at night?

Yeah there was some music at the main stage and some guy just kind of plucking on his bass around some of the vendor tents haha. There was still a bit of sunlight left while I was still there, but the convention center and Omni looked really good lit up even then.

The current completion date for the lower park is July 2022.

Plutonic Panda 05-24-2021, 02:36 PM I really they’d label that blank square the “square of shame.”
CCOKC 05-25-2021, 08:57 AM That hill is massive in person. There should be a great view of the river from there. I am really looking forward to this being finished as the Scissortail bridge is my preferred running route from the river to downtown.
David 05-25-2021, 09:00 AM I really they’d label that blank square the “square of shame.”
The square of pay parking with minimal, bad landscaping.
Laramie 05-25-2021, 09:07 AM There's $140 budget for all City Parks in our recently passed MAPS 4 initiative with none of it earmarked for Downtown parks--does this mean that we could see more enhancements to Lower Scissortail Park...
shawnw 05-25-2021, 10:09 AM With Scissortail and Myriad being managed by the MBG Foundation, would that maintenance even appear in the city budget?
sooner88 05-25-2021, 10:50 AM With Scissortail and Myriad being managed by the MBG Foundation, would that maintenance even appear in the city budget?
While they're related, Scissortail is managed by the Scissortail Park Foundation... same CEO, but they have different employees.
shawnw 05-25-2021, 11:29 AM Okay but doesn't change my point regarding the budget
The city does allocate money for both parks which are highly subsidized not just for maintenance but for the various programs offered.
Almost all the events at these parks are not money-makers by any stretch.
Gorgeous day. Farmer's market was booming, B-12 baseball going on; lots of activity downtown.
Interestingly, the lot south of the convention center was pay-only today. I suspect this is going to be the case on most days now.

I talked to them and they hope to open in a few weeks.
They could not get the food supplies they needed and now -- like everyone else -- are having a hard time finding workers.
bucktalk 05-29-2021, 08:18 PM Oh how I hate those parking lots between Sissortail Park and Myriad Gardens. How I wish there was a seamless, beautiful path between Myriad Gardens all the way to the river. Maybe one of these days.....
David 05-29-2021, 11:43 PM The park was packed today, some market event looked like with more booths than I remember seeing at previous Farmers Market days. I feel like this may be the single most successful MAPS project the city has ever done considering the degree to which the public is making use of it.
Taken almost exactly 4 years apart:

dcsooner 05-30-2021, 11:04 AM That lot between myriad gardens and ST park is an eyesore in its current undeveloped state. Also the auto salvage yard adjacent to the lower park.Need to find development for these parcels
The salvage yard is for sale; the lot north of Scissortail will be developed into something great in the near future.
All this doesn't happen overnight. The strides made in just a few years are pretty amazing.

I've never noticed that. Surprised no one has mentioned that before.
Plutonic Panda 05-31-2021, 09:25 AM This is cool:
https://www.theverge.com/2021/5/30/22460964/vilnius-lithuania-portal-poland-connection-pandemic
It would be really cool for OKC to work with its sister cities and build a ring of these for each city.

You say in the near future. Have you heard about something coming down the pike?

The Pow Wow was great. It was good to see some old friends there.
WheelerD Guy 06-01-2021, 05:11 PM You say in the near future. Have you heard about something coming down the pike?
That would be bad A if someone actually put a cool development there. We’d start to get a Central Park feel going.

That is a great idea. Doesn't seem like it would cost all that much.
Where would we put it here in OKC?
mugofbeer 06-01-2021, 10:18 PM Maybe replace the OKCOKCOKCOKCOKCOKC monument?

Replace the OKC cock ring?!
Rover 06-02-2021, 08:18 AM Maybe replace the OKCOKCOKCOKCOKCOKC monument?
Needs a public place where people can gather in front of it, and where the camera view shows an attractive/cool vision of the city. Needs to show life in the city to the other cities.
soonerguru 06-02-2021, 12:31 PM Can't tear down another local landmark. The cock ring is here to stay, for generations to enjoy with chortles and giggles.
Plutonic Panda 06-02-2021, 01:17 PM I too enjoy the cock ring. Perhaps the “portal” idea could be a feature of thunder alley.

LOOOLLLOLLOP YOU said POOP
David 06-02-2021, 05:55 PM We have a bunch of sister cities, right? It's just stealing the idea completely from Poland and Lithuania but a collection of those portal screen setups with each of our sister cities would be cool.
Hah, and looking back in the thread I see that it was Panda's original suggestion.
