View Full Version : Scissortail Park
catch22 01-25-2021, 09:53 PM Thanks. I wasn't aware. IMO, Uhaul is more of a nuisance. This Cusack matter is a success, quality, safety issue. It seems similar to how a freeway can split neighborhoods.
Agree. The city's position seems to be cutting off their nose to spite their face in this instance. It's the city's problem, and they decide to just take their ball and go home.

Did the city only way to the land inside the park boundaries, and Cusack's wanted to sell all of the land and buy a new building that would suit a meat packing business and be up to code. I was under the impression that that was the problem. I could be wrong though.
This is the sculpture that will soon be installed in the northeast corner of the park.
As you may recall, it was originally going to be shaped like a globe but then Thunder Alley (immediately diagonal from this spot) proposed a large basketball sculpture which was nearly identical, hence the change.

catcherinthewry 01-29-2021, 07:48 AM I like this installation much better than the original. I think it has a chance to become iconic. I bet it will be featured in a lot of Thunder national broadcasts.

runOKC 01-29-2021, 08:27 AM Absolutely love it. Really, really cool and I think it will compliment the area perfectly.
LocoAko 01-29-2021, 08:33 AM I love this much more than the original idea, even separate from the possible similarity issues across the street. This looks great.
David 01-29-2021, 08:47 AM So much better than the original globe idea.
I like the way it ties into the name of the park and even the Skydance Bridge which is bird-like.
tyeomans 01-29-2021, 08:58 AM I like it too. From the first angle at a distance, it kinda looks like a banana!
Anonymous. 01-29-2021, 09:42 AM I think it looks cool, but I wish it was something more interactive. I have mentioned before that I wanted a large plasma globe or an infinity sculpture.

Another thing, this feather will 100% be climbed on, it is basically a ladder.
Bellaboo 01-29-2021, 09:58 AM Way the Hell better than Sputnik.
Maybe they could put on a short pedestal which might help keep the climbers off ?
Bellaboo 01-29-2021, 10:12 AM It would be neat if they could put a sculpture of a Scissortail in the center of the roundabout on Robinson. Like 10 foot tall ?
shawnw 01-29-2021, 10:16 AM why did I think this was going into the roundabout?
Bellaboo 01-29-2021, 10:18 AM why did I think this was going into the roundabout?
You know, Arc de Triumph just happens to be in a 10 lane roundabout. So by association ?

Yes I've been, but hardly comparable.
Laramie 01-29-2021, 01:29 PM Art really impacts and enhances projects.
The feather adds to the variety of art you'll see in the core. Hope plans for this along with the sculpture pieces planned for the Thunder Alley Entertainment Block comes to fruition. The feather keeps with the Skydance and Scissortail theme.

Too bad OKC doesn't have a couple of hundred million laying around.......

HOT ROD 02-02-2021, 02:28 PM I also love this much more than the sputnik (not sure what they were going for with that).
The only improvement I could recommend would be an interactive component - such as if the lights changed or turned off/on as you touch them.

shawnw 02-03-2021, 12:22 PM I've never seen cars in that lot, it's like they started parking there after the construction just to be like, hey now, don't take this, it's claimed.

they used to use it as a truck pull through ... from 12th to harvey or vice versa .... with 12th street closed they can't use it for that any more ..
this was the basis of their argument that they would have to move their entire business is the city took that parcel ..
now that the can't use it in that manner the city should re explore taking that property
GoGators 02-04-2021, 04:45 PM Why doesn't the city enforce the code requirements for an approved parking lot here? Is it grandfathered in?
shawnw 02-04-2021, 05:43 PM I think the gravel makes it okay?

Looks like something you would see on a winter postcard; also there's one of the Myriad Gardens (#1441): https://www.okctalk.com/showthread.php?t=23724&page=73

Canoe 03-03-2021, 06:22 AM I bet people will want to park on the meat company's land once the park is finished.
David 03-03-2021, 08:52 AM They're going to try and turn it into a pay parking lot, I suspect.
shawnw 03-03-2021, 10:01 AM yep to both
This shows the planned on-street parking for the lower section of the park; the numbered spaces are handicapped.

ChaseDweller 03-10-2021, 12:35 PM Every time I see pictures or a map of the lower park, I get re-furious over the Cusack parcel.

It's going to look even weirder and more out of place as this area starts to take shape.
Plutonic Panda 03-10-2021, 12:42 PM Every time I see pictures or a map of the lower park, I get re-furious over the Cusack parcel.
You’re not kidding. I love the idea thrown out awhile back that if the city can ever get a hold of it, call it the Square of Shame in memory.
The city would never have done this for the main park.
In fact, they had to give the old Goodwill site right on the boulevard to one of the landowners at a great discount when he protested the amount they paid him for upper parkland. In that situation, no amount was too high to pay. Here, they just cheaped out even though they had excess money in the budget from MAPS 3.
Grant 03-10-2021, 04:11 PM What I've never understood is why the lower park has that ridiculous L shape and is only one block wide. Surely we could've taken the same two block width of the upper park all the way down to the river...
HOT ROD 03-10-2021, 04:36 PM they'll want another MAPS to "Do the Park Right". ....
and you bet the State Fair board will cook up some pork to add to that too.
Canoe 03-11-2021, 08:25 AM I had hoped that the local monied elite was going to step up and do the park right. Some of them have, but most of them have not.

This isn't Tulsa. OKC billionaires ain't got time for philanthropy that doesn't benefit them. ;)
Laramie 03-11-2021, 02:03 PM If you have a multibillionaire (George Kaiser) who is passionate about his city, you throw a ton of money into one project. Tulsa's 66.5 acre $465 million, Gathering Place is a national jewel.

Personally I think it was to just get a connection to the river, which they did.

The city also already owned all the land that fronts I-40 to the south; they had to pay to acquire everything else.
I did a long walk through downtown yesterday afternoon, starting at the parking lot south of the convention center.
It was warm yesterday but also overcast with a threat of rain, and I was shocked by the number of people in and around the park. Lots of people sitting outside at the Omni, both at the coffee shop and the taproom and that really adds more life to the area.
It was fantastic to see... Hundreds and hundreds everywhere. I walked through the Myriad Gardens with its usual level of activity which was a few dozen people meandering through with some in the kid's part and a handful in the little dog park.
It just goes to show that Scissortail is filling a very important need: A large, accessible, open space where people can just get out and walk and be outside. Once the Lower Park opens and connects everything all the way to the river trails, I think it will be even more popular.
The park will be even better once the landscape starts to mature but it's already a complete home run.

We have gone to Scissortail twice this year and the size of it makes it great. Prior, we would go to the Myriad Gardens, and while it is beautiful, there just isn't the space to spread out.
Both times the weather has been moderate, but the park is packed with people just "hanging out" and it doesn't feel crowded at all. I appreciate the food trucks that line the streets and the variety of terrain. Once things start opening and events can happen at the park on a regular basis, this place is going to be an even better addition to the city.
Only complaint I have is the road noise of I-40 can be annoying depending on where you are in the park.

interesting you should say that. I was at the park yesterday almost as far south as the bridge and never noticed the road noise in the least.
bucktalk 03-15-2021, 08:48 AM One problem at Scissortail, which could be easily corrected, deals with how much dog poop is scattered everywhere. It astounds me how many people with their 'fur babies' don't pick up after them. Yuck, disgusting and irresponsible dog owners is a bad combination to hinder having a clean park.

I definitely notice the noise from the interstate, but I am hopeful it will get better as the trees mature and are better able to block out the noise. Also, years into the future as more cars become electric, that should reduce the noise a bit.
^
Just FYI, traffic noise is almost entirely from tire roar, not engines.
But no matter, OKC does a poor job of creating noise barriers on freeways. I live near I-44 and the noise can be very loud even though I'm several blocks away. It's particularly bad because the road is elevated near me (north of Penn).
David 03-15-2021, 10:44 AM Also right near I-44 & Penn, what is weird to me but fairly convenient is I really only ever hear the interstate from my bedroom and it mostly just feels like background noise. In every other room in my condo I never notice it.

I have good windows so I don't hear it much with the windows closed, but it's often quite loud in my backyard.
d-usa 03-15-2021, 01:26 PM I'm used to it now, but I was amazed at the noise difference in Bricktown when the I-40 bridge went away.

David 03-22-2021, 09:02 AM I briefly stopped by the park this Saturday and it was the busiest I think I have personally seen it yet. No parking anywhere, I had to park up and over a few blocks and walk down from Myriad Gardens.
shawnw 03-22-2021, 09:12 AM Waiting for that one guy to park in that one corner of the cusak lot so they can be steps away from the promenade...
SagerMichael 03-22-2021, 09:37 AM That Cusack chunk is a disgrace. What could potential development on that lot even look like years from now? Anything that gets built will be right in the middle of the park

It will just be parking for decades I'm sure.
5alive 03-22-2021, 09:43 AM Agree...it's time for someone with the resources or the city to just step up and just purchase it...
amocore 03-22-2021, 10:05 AM I think we can all agree on the Cusak lot. No need to repeat it every time there is new picture.

It bears repeating. It’s awful.
