It’s why there is such a big difference in the western/central Oklahoma lakes like Thunderbird, Texoma, Eufaula, etc and the eastern Oklahoma rock bottom lakes like Grand and Tenkiller. The bonus with the muddy lakes is you get sand beaches.

i don't think grand is rock bottom

Lake Murray is, and I love being able to see the fish coming up to my bait. Since our water sources are all man made here in Oklahoma, then I see now reason why we can't or shouldn't make them cleaner/nicer looking.

Murray is limestone based. Which is rock and ultra clear.

I'm guessing they've been working on the surface because otherwise, it just seems like they put some barriers up. Maybe I missed it, but I'm guessing they check out skates?

Yes. Admission prices include a quad skate rental.

I drove by the park a few weeks ago and was.....extremely underwhelmed. The lack of built in amenities and things to do makes me think I'd spend 20 minutes there and be ready to go. A park this big needs something that can attract people on a daily basis, not Just when there are concerts or gatherings.

Sounds like you've already made up your mind, but you may want to give it a try before you bash it.... we've enjoyed each trip we've made, and visit on a weekly basis.

They do have surface they lay down for skating and can take up when the season is finished. They rent out quads and inline skates as well.

Things one can do/experience/see at Scissortail:

Children's playground
Dog park
Walking paths
Paddle boats
Skydance bridge
Splashpad/spraygrounds
Roller skating
Lawn activities (volleyball, playing catch, etc.)
Picnicking on the hill
Nature/plant/flower viewing
Ducks/geese/turtles
Seasonal exhibits
Concerts/special events
Farmers' market
People-watching
Sunsets
The OKC skyline

People's expectations obviously differ, but we've found something interesting to see or do every time we visit (which so far has been at least once per week).

I believe one of the points of Scissortail is to not have it programmed as much in order to complement the MBG, which is more along that line.

Food Trucks Wednesday night and Friday-Sunday
Street musicians
Union Station (inside will be available to public after renovation)
And hopefully soon, Ranger Programs!

I am curious what amenities you think the park is lacking. The park hasn't seemed to be having any trouble drawing people. I have been at many different times of day and have seen many people enjoying the park.

I don't know, I live in Tulsa and can only compare it to the gathering place. No basketball courts, no sports courts, no skate parks, minimal playgrounds, no dine in restaurants, no impressive pathways that you walk through and say "wow I could spend hours here".

I was excited to see the park when I pulled up. I grew up in okc and want nothing but the best. But it's just a night and day difference when you compare the two. One looks like it grew out of the ground, the other looks like it was awkwardly placed there.

Totally different purposes. The Gathering Place is very nice, but it felt too stressful to me with constant activity and kids running around. Like walking through a Disney theme park. You are comparing a park designed as an open space for walking around leisurely, versus a park designed to captivate your interest or entertain. I don't understand why that is so hard of a concept to grasp.

If you are going to Scissortail Park to be entertained you are likely going for the wrong reason. Unless you are a kid in the splashpark or kids area it's not designed to entertain you, it's designed to relax.

Well, this park came out of the ground in the heart of an urban area in open fields/empty lots/cleared lots previously built upon whereas the Gathering Place was developed in a riparian area that was already more park-y anyway. Gotta let the landscaping mature--it will look very different in a decade! Really tough to compare the two parks on the fact of their origin locations alone.

You clearly don't know what you're talking about because all of these things are and will be included in both the upper (the part you saw) and the lower park (to be completed in 2021). You also didn't bother to get out of your car, which says it all.

And that very well may have been the issue. I was going to look for something fun to do, like at the river rapid area. I love that place.

So, the park is only half finished. Literally. 35 acres done, 35 to go. The second half will have some sporting stuff. The dine in restaurant on the completed half has yet to open. Union Station has yet to be renovated and will have amenities, I believe including restaurants. So I'd say reserve judgement until 2023 or so?

Having recently visited Gathering Place for the first time, I'll be the first to say it is a very different, very special place, in many ways far better the Scissortail, but there are definitely some areas where Scissortail is excels. For example, though the park connects directly to the river trail (Scissortail will as well eventually), I was surprised the signs said no riding in the park (I mean, I get it, though), and though I'm not a dog owner I was highly surprised to see that Gathering Place was strictly pet free. There's just something cool about riding through Scissortail each evening and seeing the wide variety of people and pets using the space. Also, I'm a parent, but felt like there was almost TOO much kid stuff at Gathering Place. Like, I just wanna chill in this quiet space over here away from the kids gimmie a break, eh?

One area where GP kills SP is the trees. I love the sheer variety of trees at GP and the fact that they were able to incorporate so many existing mature trees. It just looks like its been there much longer than it has. That's just something SP will never have.

Robinson will be closed from OKC Boulevard to I-40, and SW 7th from Robinson to Broadway, for about four months beginning Monday, July 6. It's for a road reconstruction project. Weather and other factors could affect the timeline. Thanks for your patience.

Presuming this is for the updated streetscape, including the roundabout for the sculpture.

I think you're right there will be art in the roundabout! It's just a different piece than the one in the park. This area will be quite the little art haven. 4th St Experience, Taking Flight, Roundabout, Convention Center Light Installation, Convention Center Garage, and Art in the lower park (read that in a Velocity article posted yesterday).

I have not been able to confirm that. I think they are waiting to see what happens with Thunder Alley.

Regardless, all city projects are required to spend 1% of their total budget on public art, so something big will go there.

How many millions of dollars would it take to convert the Oklahoma River downtown portion where it is currently dammed into a fully swimmable and filtered river/lake. Having the river be used for recreation and connecting it to the Bricktown Canal is a pipedream of mine.

Half a billion?

A lot of the aquatic plants that were intended to be used as part of the filtration system never took root or died. This caused an algae bloom. They then added a dye to color the water to create that color as well as to prevent algae. If you see photos from May or early June, you will see the color is a muddy brown.

Making it swimmable would be nearly impossible. In addition to the industrial and agricultural discharge you have an entire city draining into it upstream from the dam. Not sure how you could keep it clean enough to swim.

Connecting to the canal would be possible with a series of locks. The canal boats as currently designed wouldn't fare too well on the river though.
