View Full Version : Scissortail Park
That fencing has been there since they started construction.
I know there will be fencing and control points for the concert on Friday but not sure exactly how it will work.
But I believe it will all be gone by Saturday.
Thanks. I'm strangely curious as to how all this will be managed.
dford2 09-26-2019, 04:16 AM Seems kind of silly KOL had to bring their own stage.
Is the stage we built not flexible enough for it to meet their demands? Seems horribly designed if so.
It's absolutely impossible to build a stage that would fill every requirement based upon type of event. (music, plays, poetry readings, etc;) Building a minimal needs stage is common practice.

The "stage" does probably meet the requirements of 90 percent of the things that will go on at the park. I really think of it as a covered pavillon rather than a stage. Plays, weddings, poetry readers, Edgar Cruize type of artists.
I bet they need this temporary stage because its taller so more people throughout the park can see KOL play. 90 percent of everything else will be up close and personal. There is no point in building a tall monolith structure to see someone reading poetry while in a paddle boat.
Also, let's say they did built an elevated stage. That becomes a fall hazard and they would then have to build a fence around it when not in use. With this setup, they can just leave it and let anyone walk up to it and go in it.

if you have a CC permit you will be allowed to bring in your gun into the park either open or concealed
aDark 09-27-2019, 09:44 AM Does anyone know if the construction fences are down around the park? I want to go wander the park this morning or afternoon. I know festivities don't open until 5:00, but I want to see the park itself before it gets crowded.

I think they are still up and will stay up through the concert so they can control access.
But the should be gone by tomorrow and of course there are all types of events Saturday and Sunday.
Here is what is actually not permitted at the event:
Backpacks, rucksacks, large purses. Any small bags are subject to search. Drones, remote-controlled aircrafts, cars or toys. Lawn chairs, selfie sticks, paper lanterns, fireworks, explosives, professional cameras, SLRs, video cameras, iPads, GoPros, tripods, chains or chain wallets, umbrellas, objects that can be used as projectiles (glow sticks, balls, Frisbees), laser pointers, aerosol cans, sporting equipment (including bats, hockey sticks), tents, musical instruments, bicycles, skateboards, scooters, and roller skates. No outside beverages other than a sealed water bottle or empty reusable, non-glass bottle.

(I'm curious to know what led to a chain wallet ban.)

Probably SOP at this point. I know a few years back at the courthouse I found out you couldn't enter with a wallet chain.

Someone would think twice before shooting someone though. They would have less of an issue getting into a fistfight in a dispute.

I walked around the entire park this morning. The fences are there, but people are walking in and out.

Recent Forever 21 customer: "Wait just a second while I unhook my velcro wallet so I can punch you in the face."
Some 90s fashion is coming back, so I guess it is possible...
I am in favor of banning them, though, on fashion grounds alone.

Ya, that seems kind of silly. The latest Cell phone cameras are getting so good that the only real difference with a "Professional" camera is that you've got many more lens options, right? I mean cell phones are getting up to 48 Megapixels now and can film 4K/60FPS.
I wonder what their justification is there?
dankrutka 09-27-2019, 02:11 PM I took these images from the top of the hill both facing the stage and the pond.

However, the bridge is really in bad condition. Wood is warped and missing. The benches are particularly awful. It's disappointing to see it in such poor condition so soon after construction.

Almost every show/concert you go to today does not allow professional cameras. The act/venue/promoter are paying photographers for their work.
dankrutka, just to clarify your photo's location. That is the Skydance I-40 bridge, not the pond bridge?
d-usa 09-27-2019, 02:16 PM I haven’t seen a blanket ban on SLRs at any shows I’ve gone to. I’ve seen issues with bringing a backpack full of lenses, or bringing telephoto lenses. But I’ve never had an issue bringing in a camera with a basic lens.
Phones have great sensors and can shoot RAW, so if they are worried about bootleg pictures or footage they are fighting a loosing battle.

For this weekend, they are issuing pro photographer passes -- both stills and video.
Gazette is sending our pro photog and I have a pass as well.
There is a photography pit directly in front of the stage.

Yes, the tattered bench is on Skydance Bridge.

Hasn't that bridge been plagued with problems (warping, etc.) since shortly after it opened?
OKCRT 09-27-2019, 05:12 PM Hasn't that bridge been plagued with problems (warping, etc.) since shortly after it opened?
That's what happens when done on the cheap. That bridge is nothing like what they had originally planned. The first renderings were of a wonderful looking bridge and then they build what we have now and added wood boards that look like total crap.
Some shots from tonight's event.
Tons of food trucks and beer tents. Really a cool setting. One of the best things about the park is there just tons and tons of benches, so for events like this, it really works out well.
Photos taken before even the 2 warm-up acts started, but the place was filling rapidly.

shawnw 09-27-2019, 11:38 PM I don't think Skydance has had it's re-decking yet.
Here's a video I took from a bit before KOL went on.

While there were definitely things that aren't "done", I thought the park looked really great. It's only going to get more special as time goes on. I haven't been to the Gathering Place. I'm sure it's fantastic and probably way better than STP, but personally I like that we have an urban park of this magnitude.
And if you didn't see on Twitter, apparently a bunch of people (concert-goers, not park employees or volunteers) picked up trash from the great lawn after the show.
Yes, they allocated a bunch of money to re-do the deck on Skydance but the work has't been done yet.
Don't know why they didn't do it while the bridge was effectively closed during almost 2 years of park construction.
smitteebc 09-28-2019, 06:45 AM Wasn't there going to be some art sculptures put up in front of the park. Is that still planned? I haven’t heard anything about it in awhile.

Yes, but I haven't seen a building permit yet. It is already budgeted.
Holt announced at the concert last night 26,000 were in attendance.

My wife and I spent a couple of days in Tulsa a few weeks ago. In addition to visiting both Philbrook locations, we also spent some time at The Gathering Place. Let me just say that it is one of the most amazing places ever. It's mostly designed for families with children, but it has something for everyone. I definitely recommend that everyone get to see it at least once. And I'm looking forward to visiting our version in the near future.
LocoAko 09-28-2019, 10:57 AM Great time last night and really loved what I got to see of the park (parts of it were still not open). Was also cool riding the streetcar there - it was full of people talking about how they'd never ridden the streetcar before but wanted to come see the new park that way. Felt like a bit night for OKC.

Rover 09-28-2019, 11:34 AM Great shots. The one looking down the promenade is outstanding view.
kevin lee 09-28-2019, 12:02 PM Think about how the view will look when the FNC is lit up.
jonny d 09-28-2019, 01:24 PM It may not have been intentional, but the CC being lit up helped a lot, as well, and made the views seem much cooler (from pics, since I unfortunately could not make the show).

It really wasn't bad. While 28,000 people in the park seems like a massive number, there was plenty of space to roam around. The park feels so much bigger than it looks.
shawnw 09-28-2019, 06:50 PM Yeah, the east side was pretty swamped where the food was and of course the lawn, but all the other parts were surprisingly sparse. I did not intend to go in, but after cruising around the site on my bike and seeing it wasn't too bad, decided to risk it.

yeah, my primary concern is safety, especially with the gun laws in this State. It only takes one idiot, and I’m generally risk adverse when it comes to events where I might be particularly exposed to said idiots.

I would be more worried about large crowds attracting idiots with bombs. I suspect one idiot with a gun wouldn't last long in a large crowd in Oklahoma. Odds are someone is going to shoot the man/woman relatively quickly.

Whatever you say, Coach.
Southsider2 09-28-2019, 08:50 PM One thing I will say about Oklahoma’s is they usually are a very engaged/loud concert crowd and that was not the case last night. KOL put on a decent show but it seemed as if no one knew the songs which is understandable. Anyways the park looked great and certainly has a ton of potential. I look forward to visiting again soon when things settle down a bit.

OK isn’t even in the top half of states regarding gun ownership. Guess you wouldn’t go out much in most of the US. Lol

I am no fan of guns or the permissive laws we have here in Oklahoma, but there were metal detectors at every entrance to the park last night and they were searching each and every person. A lot was made about the fact guns could be brought it because it seems (and is) ridiculous compared to the list of things you couldn't. I wound up staying on the edges of the crowd because I also get a bit anxious in crowds and fear of being trampled, etc. But frankly, as far as guns or general potential for attack is concerned, you were probably safer inside the park last night than outside of it. *shrug*

Right, because outside the park there was a plethora of umbrellas, blankets, and wallets with chains.
pw405 09-29-2019, 09:50 AM Took a stroll through Saturday, park was very vibrant with many folks out and about. It can be hard to demonstrate scale with pictures, but it IS BIG!

The "sack" effect of the lake is certainly not noticeable at the park. In case anybody was still concerned about that.

While I certainly enjoyed the visit, I Feel like I need to visit when it is NOT opening weekend to really form an accurate opinion.
In what felt like a "big city" random surprise, this street performer with an amazing mirrored suit was going around and interacting with everybody on the promenade. Dancing, giving high fives, taking pictures etc. I gotta get one of these suits!

Thanks for the shots!
As much as I had been down there and walked through the park many times, being there on Friday night with that crowd was one of those "this can't be OKC" moments.
The setting is much cooler and larger than it looks in photos or videos.
shawnw 09-29-2019, 10:42 AM And only half the park is done. It's pretty cool that we get to open another half in two years.
progressiveboy 09-29-2019, 03:35 PM Looking forward to visiting the park when I am in OKC in November. Looks really nice from all the renderings and pictures!
BG918 09-29-2019, 03:58 PM Cool picture with the storm in the distance. Is it just paddle boats for rental or are there kayaks and stand up paddle boards as well?
