I came up with "The Yard at Union Station" aDark 03-07-2017, 04:19 PM I submitted "Pioneer Park" - I feel that it encompasses the history of OKC's initial settlement. Plus, it is simple, short, and catchy. I do recognize some may be opposed to "honoring" the land run, but I think Pioneer speaks more to anyone who was willing to settle in the wilderness - as opposed to a celebration of the taking of lands. I would like something unique, but still catchy. I originally was going to submit Heartland Park, but apparently that is a motocross track in Kansas. I submitted Prosper Park. I cannot [easily] find any existence of a park named that in the US. Laramie 03-08-2017, 11:16 AM . I love the bridge itself, but have never really liked the name. That's funny because I feel just the opposite! The only thing that has me worried about Scissortail is mainly because of the word "scissor", and I'm afraid people might take that word in another direction if any of you know what I mean. I would hate for something like that to catch on and become a laughing stock when we are attempting to urbanize our city and compete with some of the bigger leagues. Am I the only one that thinks this? It's the first thing I thought of when I saw Scissortail. dankrutka 03-08-2017, 02:09 PM I submitted "Pioneer Park" - I feel that it encompasses the history of OKC's initial settlement. Anywho, I'm just excited it is being put to a public vote! And it's worth pointing out that recognizing "pioneers" means marginalizing the Indigenous histories that are a large part of Oklahoma's history. Many of the Pioneers in Oklahoma, for example, were Boomers like David Payne who had no respect for Indigenous treaties, land, or cultures. I've also never found the many black freedman that founded all-black towns to be included in "pioneer" histories. Anyway, I'd just like to see any public parks to be inclusive if they're to be historical. aDark 03-08-2017, 02:22 PM And it's worth pointing out that recognizing "pioneers" means marginalizing the Indigenous histories that are a large part of Oklahoma's history. It's a fair concern. Certainly don't want to marginalize anyone! It wasn't intended to, but your point stands. Back to the drawing board! tyeomans 03-08-2017, 03:07 PM What about something reflecting our state rock? Rose Park? Rose Rock? Rose Rock Park? Laramie 03-08-2017, 04:04 PM Cornett Park or Cornett 'Family' Park Named in honor of Mayor Mick & Councilman Jack Cornett & the Cornett Family--His father, Edward G. Cornett, and mother founded a meat-packing company, Cornett Packing Co., in the 1920s. Cornett operated the family business on SE 8, south of Bricktown, for many years before financial troubles led to its closure in the early 1990s.. LocoAko 03-08-2017, 04:10 PM Cornett Park or Cornett 'Family' Park Named in honor of Mayor Mick & Councilman Jack Cornett & the Cornett Family. They've already said they won't be naming it after anybody. I submitted Skydance Park since I like the name and its ties to the bridge, but equally like Union Park. I like the idea of Scissortail Park in theory, but I don't feel like it rolls off the tongue well. Laramie 03-08-2017, 04:16 PM They've already said they won't be naming it after anybody. I submitted Skydance Park since I like the name and its ties to the bridge, but equally like Union Park. I like the idea of Scissortail Park in theory, but I don't feel like it rolls off the tongue well. My bad about missing the part about not using anybody's name. Agree, that Skydance Park could tie in better with the bridge already there. There are many things you could build in the area with use of the Skydance brand--eventually, a Skydance (observation) Tower. David 03-08-2017, 04:20 PM I voted Union Park. Short and sweet, and has an obvious connection to the Union Station right there. Originally I was favoring the Skydance idea, but changed my mind over time. stratosphere 03-08-2017, 04:41 PM I submitted 'Freedom Park' though i think 'Skydance Park' is a better choice and should probably win. ABCOKC 03-08-2017, 05:22 PM IMO the trick is to find a name that's stately but not pretentious. Seems to me Union Commons best fulfills the first criterion, although as someone has expressed in this thread it might fail at the latter. Personally I feel like "Skydance Park" is more whimsical, and "Pioneer Park" gives off a rustic vibe. Those would be fine names for other parks, but for a central urban park in particular I feel like dignified is the way to go. shawnw 03-08-2017, 05:24 PM Since we have BOK Park Plaza tower, maybe we should name the park BOK Plaza Park......... _Kyle 03-08-2017, 05:27 PM Plaza Park shadfar 03-08-2017, 05:28 PM I like Skydance Park or Union Park hoya 03-08-2017, 06:05 PM We still don't have anything in this city honoring our native son, Lon Chaney Jr. I suggest we name it "Wolfman Park". What about "Skydance" has to do with our heritage? I'm not being snotty, I truly don't get the reference. I thought it was a pretty random name for the pedestrian bridge when it was announced. LocoAko 03-08-2017, 09:36 PM What about "Skydance" has to do with our heritage? I'm not being snotty, I truly don't get the reference. I thought it was a pretty random name for the pedestrian bridge when it was announced. I don't know if it has any actual history or state (perhaps it is being confused with 'scissortail'?) but, at the risk of sounding really corny, I just like the mental image it conjures up. Oklahoma embraces and is well known for its vivid happenings in the sky -- both weather/storms and sunsets -- and the word "skydance" plays on that activity and imagery, IMO. I think it's an artistic phrasing of what so many, including myself, find beautiful about Oklahoma. *shrug* Edited to add: Looks like my interpretation is off-base, but I also like this perspective. The VisitOKC.com website explains it as the following: At more than 200 feet tall, the SkyDance Pedestrian Bridge soars above Interstate 40 in downtown Oklahoma City and has become one of the city's most unique landmarks. The design is inspired by the "sky dance" of the scissor-tailed flycatcher, Oklahoma's state bird. https://www.visitokc.com/about-okc/okc-facts/ Dustin 03-09-2017, 11:03 AM I don't personally like "Skydance" since we already have the Skydance Bridge. I vote Union Park. betts 03-09-2017, 11:36 AM I like Skydance, but I voted for Cornett Park. I think it's a great way to thank a Mayor who has done so much for OKC. I think they should name it after him, no matter what they've said. I like Union Park as well. Timshel 03-09-2017, 12:08 PM May just be me but I think the previously mentioned Union Commons rolls of the tongue better than Union Park. Geographer 03-09-2017, 12:53 PM I voted for Union Commons in the City's poll. I've seen this before and they literally drop right out of the sky to impress the ladies. Teo9969 03-09-2017, 01:11 PM I like the idea of putting Cornett's name on this, but not on the whole park. We should call it the Cornett Lawn at Union Park. I really think the lawn has a chance to become a key installation of this city, so I think his name there would more than suffice for right now. traxx 03-09-2017, 02:16 PM What about something reflecting our state rock? Massey's Accessory Shop is now closed (on the west side of Robinson, so was purchased by the city for the lower park). Not sure when he closed, I was last there on January 10 and I'm pretty sure it was open then, and I'm certain it was still open last fall. I feel it closed recently. Massey's has been somewhere in Hubcap Alley or nearby for 90(!!!!) years. Also, on the other side of the road, so across from the future park, A&A Auto Salvage and A&P Truck Salvage are now closed and fenced off, for sale. This is also a fairly recent closure (last couple of months). Iron Kartel (east side of Robinson), Bethany's (west), and the Old Volks Home (west) are all still in business, as near as I could tell. Stew 03-09-2017, 05:39 PM Taxpayer's Park hfry 03-09-2017, 06:28 PM I haven't thought of a name yet but I've always loved Ou's football stadium being called the palace on the prairie and for the park a name that highlights it's uniqueness of a major urban park on the plains would be fitting. But I also think anything that highlights the Union Station would be equally as fitting. kevinpate 03-09-2017, 06:39 PM Not the Park You Were Pitched (but it'll do) Dustin 03-09-2017, 06:55 PM Sounds a little like Rosa Parks. Rose Rock Commons doesn't sound too bad... JIMBO 03-09-2017, 07:13 PM I entered two possible names into the list. The first was SISSOR-TAIL PARK. I think this name works well with the SKYDANCE BRIDGE. MY second choise is RENEWAL PARK. I see the park as a sign of the renewal of all the city, not just the down town. Hopefuly this renewal will spread south and west to include Capitol Hill and The Stockyards area. These areas have been ignored for way to long. jccouger 03-09-2017, 07:14 PM OKC Walk Park |
