The goal was to spend a bunch of federal grant money. And in Oklahoma City, at least, there's nothing 'hazy' about the laws regarding sign placement.
View Full Version : 5320 Signs around OKC? bornhere 02-14-2011, 11:32 PM The goal was to spend a bunch of federal grant money. Larry OKC 02-15-2011, 04:37 AM or at least make the website more useful, as that will be a much longer available resource than the signs. Did they just make up the following names for the regions, I certainly don't think I have heard people using them for the regions. Frontier Country - OKC metro, possibly a little more. Lake and Trail Country - everything south of 'Frontier Country' Great Plains Country - southwest corner of state. Kiamichi Country - southeast corner of state. Green Country - northeast corner of state. Red Carpet Country - northwest corner of state. http://www.ok.gov/strongandhealthy/Tools_for_Healthy_Communities/index.html Those names have been used by the state/tourism department since at least the late 80s??? Maybe early 90s, remember them in use when I worked at McDonald's and we had cross promotions many, many, many moons ago.... Please post the law in question they broke. Cam_man 02-15-2011, 09:34 AM I had been staying quiet since the last back and forth because it was pointless until the reveal. Now that it has happened I'm even less impressed with the 5320 marketing campaign. The only thing worse than failing to get buzz is to get buzz and then fall flat with the actual launch. I still don't know for certain what the goal of the 5320 campaign up to today was. If the state admits it was for buzz alone then they should be ashamed because that is never a good use of public funds. I'm also shocked VI Marketing would try to create such hype around something they had to have known would fall flat and have a terrible delivery. They'd have spent the money better if they just gave 350,000 people $1,000 at the end of a year if they improved their lifestyle. I'll have to agree with you now on some points. I thought they did a pretty good job raising curiosity and getting people talking but now that you can see the back end, that website is terrible. It appears to me now that the state was only concerned with getting people talking initially because I would find it hard to believe that VI did the website too. It looks like they already had a site or skimped on the site and put all their money towards marketing the campaign. I do agree that it's poor job on VI to create a bunch of hype for a site like that but on the other hand if that's all the state would let them do, what do you do? Their not going to turn the job down because somebody else would have just done it. So I would say Phase 1 was good and had good execution but Phase 2 is not good and so far has terrible execution, time will tell how the rest of this plays out but so far this post-reveal campaign is looking pretty bad. And to clarify, they didn't have any permit to place the signs, correct? bornhere 02-15-2011, 11:25 AM The permits are for signs placed on private property. I, for example, could not legally place one of those rolling marquee signs with flashing lights in my own front yard without having some sort of permit. You cannot get a permit to put a sign on a public right of way. okc_bel_air 02-15-2011, 12:25 PM Is the sign placement even a valid argument anymore? Since we now know that this program and campaign is a state government program I am sure the state will make exceptions to the law. bornhere 02-15-2011, 12:49 PM The state can't 'make exceptions' to the law. I suppose the legislature could pass a law pre-empting all city ordinances pertaining to sign placement, but I doubt that will happen. Cam_man 02-15-2011, 01:18 PM I am not sure. I just knew where the link was so I wanted to be helpful. :P I do remember reading somewhere where someone called and asked if they had permits. I think it was on Steve's blog in one of the comments that I read that. Of course, I don't know for sure. Is there a planner here that can define "Portable Signs" and "Accessory Signs" for me. I think I understand the difference but the language is so much stronger on the former that it would be good to know which one they would qualify as. Gotcha. Well thanks for the link. I too would like someone (bornhere perhaps since you say it's not hazy) to explain. okc_bel_air 02-15-2011, 01:19 PM IMO I doubt anyone will really try to fight the sign placement issue anyway. |
