View Full Version : Hybrid streetlights in OK?
TheTravellers 01-14-2011, 04:09 PM Just read this:
http://techcrunch.com/2011/01/13/wind-solar-streetlights-sanya/
And it says this:
"They will soon be installed in lots and along city streets in: San Jose, Oklahoma, Ohio, the Virgin Islands, Australia, and Poland."
Anybody know where in OK?
MustangGT 01-14-2011, 04:10 PM Interesting. Thanks for posting.
ou48A 01-14-2011, 08:21 PM The city of Norman has just installed LED street lighting in my neighborhood and it is clearly not as effective at lighting the streets.
It does a good job of lighting near the light pole but the street between the light poles is far darker.
The drive ways and front yards are also far darker and that has caused some concerns about crime & safety.
Because it is so dark people who have never turned on their porch lights on are now doing so.
So much for saving electricity and the environment.:headscrat
metro 01-14-2011, 08:57 PM OKC already has them on SW 15th behind the Dell call center area to Meridian.
circuitboard 01-14-2011, 09:51 PM I have seen the ones they are testing on Portland at night and they are very bright. They save energy and last longer, which is a good thing.

Portland and ...? Thanks in advance. :-)
circuitboard 01-17-2011, 03:57 PM My bad... Portland, in between Meridian and MacArthur.. It's that newly paved road, that cut through the land field next to the river.

SW 15th, Portland W. to MacArthur.
stdennis 01-17-2011, 05:12 PM I got from the article that these hybrid lights are solar and wind powered not just LED.

Here's what they look like, some people think they're ugly (not sure if this will work, first time posting a pic):

stdennis 01-18-2011, 01:06 PM I think they look kinda cool. I think they would be great on trails but i dot know how much i would like them next to a street.
dankrutka 01-18-2011, 06:11 PM Wow. Definitely different and I love it because of that. I love when people take chances with something different...

I agree that they are interesting in an area like that. I don't think I would like them in an urban setting though.
rcjunkie 01-19-2011, 03:25 AM Wonder if something like this is available for the home/property owner market. This would work great at my cabin and boat dock where the cost to run power is almost prohibitive.
David 01-19-2011, 09:18 AM Looks like that one is a little pricey (http://www.harborgreenstore.com/products/Sanya-Hybrid-Wind-%26-Solar-Street-Lamp.html), but I was able to find a few different ones (http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&hl=en&biw=1024&bih=677&tbs=shop:1&q=hybrid+street+light&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&pbx=1&fp=7ae27570a9208bce) that are a bit cheaper.
okcphotoguy76 01-25-2011, 10:46 PM Saw these lights going up along Reno near Robinson today.

That looks much better for a modern urban setting.
dankrutka 01-26-2011, 12:29 AM It would be neat to see some of these downtown with P180.
Isn't that exactly what is happening? The picture is of then going up with P180.
I love them.
ljbab728 01-26-2011, 12:49 AM Apologies. From the picture it didn't look like DT.
Are we looking at the same picture? I see the Oklahoma Tower in the near background.
dwellsokc 01-26-2011, 05:38 AM These hybrid streetlights use wind & solar to charge batteries to power LED lamps. They look stupid, require ridiculous amounts of maintenance, and should only be used where there is no available electricity. They’d be wonderful for a backwoods cabin, but NOT a city.
The few LED streetlights along the south edge of SW 15th (between Portland & Meridian) were provided as samples by some sign company in an attempt to sell the City. They have terrible photometrics, and shine right in driver’s eyes. They’re junk. Hopefully the City will recognize this and reject them.
The Project 180 streetlights are a different sort of ‘hybrid.’ They use halogen lamps to light the street surface, and separate arms with LED lamps to light pedestrian surfaces. They have excellent photometrics, and look very cool! (and they use plain, old-fashioned electricity)
okclee 04-04-2011, 12:48 PM Anyone care to share new pics of the P180 Hybrid streetlights?

Sounds like we need a hybrid of the hybrids. : )
I actually don't mind the look of the first ones, but I really like the ones going in downtown.
