View Full Version : Penn Square Mall
What makes you say it's a bad fit?
Because it's a very high-end men's clothing store that does a lot of business in bespoke suits.
Not that type of place where mall traffic is going to help them much and in fact the parking situation is no doubt off-putting to their regular customers.

Exactly. Even 50 Penn across the street still has a couple of destination clothing stores that’s fine there, but would be out of place at Penn Square.

Thanks
I'm sure Mr. Ooley's is well aware that BC Clark has been killing it since they moved from the mall to their new place in Classen Curve.
TornadoKegan 04-08-2024, 02:06 PM Found this video that just dropped about the history Penn Square Mall. the channel also has a video on crossroads mall

Not that type of place where mall traffic is going to help them much and in fact the parking situation is no doubt off-putting to their regular customers.Mr. Ooley's has 4 dedicated parking spots but they are not policed well. People consistently park there who do not shop in Ooley's and it makes it hard when you are just trying to run into Ooley's. So I guess I like this move. I wish they were moving to Classen Curve or NHP though. Plenty of parking. Across the street from NHP in a small building with limited parking seems...odd.
The Shadow 04-09-2024, 03:07 PM Yes, they are moving to 6500 N. Western.
Used to be Gordon Stuart Jewelers.
I was trying to think how long Ooley's has been at Penn Square... Maybe always but it's been a bad fit for a long time.
Mr. Ooley's moved to Penn Square from Northpark in the late 90's
Urbanized 04-09-2024, 03:11 PM ^^^^^^^
Originally opened in Shepherd Mall in 1964. Moved to Northpark in the '80s and then to PSM in 1995.
soonerguru 04-10-2024, 11:33 PM That kinda surprises me. Thought the Cupcake fad had already started to fade....
I love cupcakes just as much as I did prior to visiting Magnolia Bakery in the West Village in 2003, ground zero for the international cupcake fad. Not fade away here.
warreng88 04-12-2024, 12:32 PM Went to the mall today and saw that Paramount Jewelers opened in the old Godiva chocolate location. Last time I was here it was still being worked on.

You didn't eat a piece of gold thinking it was chocolate, did you?

I wondered why it seemed crunchy...
Somebody expressed the idea of Abercrombie & Fitch returning to the mall...
Well, it's happening. They have filed plans for a large 6,200-square-foot store on the lower level just off the central court; it will wrap around Paramount Jewelers. It will be one of the largest stores in the mall.

Ginkasa 05-05-2024, 09:44 AM Is that Image store closing or are they moving? Feels like they opened in that spot not that long ago.
MagzOK 05-05-2024, 09:49 AM A&F clothing is high quality, we love it. We frequent the A&F Kids in Texas annually for back to school shopping.

It's one of those temporary-looking mall-filler type of pop-ups that will be going away.
PhiAlpha 05-05-2024, 10:54 AM Time is a flat circle lol
W8N2SKI 05-05-2024, 11:13 AM So, I guess that leaves only the current Pottery Barn location for Simon's to fill. As much as I dislike Simon for their lack of investment in the mall's appearance, they are doing well at filling spaces with big-name tenants.
Watermelonsugar 05-05-2024, 12:32 PM Oh my gosh. This is going to be so dangerous for me $$$$. I am thrilled.

Still need to fill the old BC Clark space, the Mr. Ooley's space, the old Abercrombie space, the old Williams Sonoma space, the old Altar'd state space.

Oh yeah, damn, I haven't been in the mall for a bit. I forgot about all of those. Also, the Sephora location, most likely. I can't imagine they keep both once the Classen Curve location opens.
I guess my disdain for Simon is still valid lol.
The BC Clark space has a tenant, Mr. Ooley's hasn't even left yet, several sizeable tenants are moving in...
Turnover is part and parcel of retail properties and PSM has done a very good job of maintaining a high occupancy while other malls are sad or completely dead.

Found out yesterday the store in Penn Square is staying open. A worker there said the new location in Classen Curve will carry slightly different brands. I bet both stores will still be super busy, they have a lot of exclusive products that you can't get elsewhere.
OkieBerto 06-24-2024, 11:35 AM I went to grab a birthday gift over the weekend. One of the little shops we went into still smelled like sewage. It wasn't super strong, but it was obvious. It was the same wing that had the problem for years, so I guess it still isn't completely fixed.
bombermwc 06-25-2024, 07:04 AM I smelled the same thing. It's that hall where the bathrooms are and the security desk used to be, right? I can't believe after all this time, it's still broken like that. I'm surprised that people are willing to work there or shop there with that stench. It would be better to just wall that area off for storage or something.
TeeDub2 08-22-2024, 01:05 PM Is there an opening date for Abercrombie in the new location yet?

Not sure but they are also opening Abercrombie Kids.
TeeDub2 09-23-2024, 02:11 PM It's open now!

Pottery Barn is closed and they are busy moving all their merchandise to OAK; the new store opens 10/4.

Victoria's Secret is doing a big renovation; they have opened a temporary store in the old BC Clark space.
I wasn't aware Popeye's had opened in the mall. Also Cantaritos Mexican Grill, which has another location in Quail Springs, but I believe they are local.

warreng88 09-24-2024, 01:18 PM That Popeyes has been there for a little while. I go to the mall to grab a quick lunch once every couple of weeks and don't even remember what was there before it. T-Bell?
Plutonic Panda 09-24-2024, 01:33 PM PSM is so overdue for a major remodel.

No, I think Taco Bell was where Spunkie's Soul Food is now. I asked my son, who keeps track of all the comings and goings, and Freshen's was in that Popeye's space. They moved to where they are now when Subway closed.
Cantarito's is really tasty. My spouse and I usually get it when we have lunch in the mall.
David 09-24-2024, 02:11 PM I've been pretty pleased with Cantaritos the couple times I tried it.
PSM is so overdue for a major remodel.
Disagree.
Looks nice inside and remains very full and active.

They have a pretty big selection. What do you usually get there? I have been wanting to try it, but am always between a lot of things so I end up going some where else.

Maybe I’m just spoiled about how nice the malls in LA are. Same thing with fashion show in Las Vegas. I’m not saying Penn Square is a dump. But I think it could use a good remodel. Compare it to either the Beverly Center, fashion Island, or pretty much any of the Westfield malls in LA.
^
Those are the exceptions.
There are plenty of malls like Penn Square in Cali; and plenty that are worse.

My spouse and I always share the Chicken on the Beach. Its chicken and rice and cheese and they give you some tortillas. So good! I've also had their burrito and tacos and those were also very tasty.

I think it's a carnitas and chicken thing, it's been a bit so I couldn't say for certain without checking the menu.
PSM is so overdue for a major remodel.
Why? The mall looks good and is always busy so it does not really need a major remodel
Bowser214 09-24-2024, 05:50 PM It’s okay. Did they ever update the restrooms? With the Oak across the street it’d be nice to mirror that vibe. It currently doesn’t.

Yeah, they did update the bathrooms, it is nice
I figured A&F would’ve remodeled the space more extensively; doesn’t look too different than when Banana Republic was open. The store looks great, though, and I hope they do well.
We went to Penn Square mall today just to eat at the food court because we were in the area. We got there a little after 4:00 so less than 2 hours before they close on Sunday. We haven't been there since before Covid. The place was packed with people. Parking lot on the south side practically full. We've been to Quail Springs Mall several times just this year and it is nowhere near as busy. I'd even say practically dead compared to PSM. I did notice that most people there were pretty young compared to me and my wife.
^
That food court in particular is not only full of desirable places to eat, but seemingly always busy.
I like the Japanese place Sarku and I am always behind 10 orders or so, although they are very fast in their prep.
I thought I had heard that Malls were dying. Apparently not this one. The whole mall was busy, not just the food court. And such a young crowd not just hanging out but shopping in the stores from what we saw. I had Charley's. The food is always hot and fresh there. My wife had Panda Express. She did say the Chinese food at Quail is better than PE at PSM.
bison34 09-29-2024, 07:53 PM Pottery Barn is a big store to replace. I wonder if they have a tenant on the waiting list for that spac already lined up.

I mean, typical shopping malls are dying. Penn Square Mall is the last primarily retail one standing in OKC. Crossroads had a slow painful death, and Quail Springs Mall essentially had to reinvent itself as more of an entertainment and lifestyle center in addition to the remaining retail it retains. Quail Springs had an opportunity to be the "it" mall around the turn of the century, but there has been little investment by its various owners since the last major renovation when AMC was added in late 1998. Other than the retail mix it has added (H&M, Round One, Blue Zoo, Von Maur, the common areas of the mall look like they did 20 or so years ago.
In a market like OKC and smaller, it seems that each metro can support one traditional mall, Tulsa has Woodland Hills, Wichita has Towne East, etc. All of these have one thing in common, Simon Property Group, which tends to be the "higher end" shopping mall in the market and has destination stores in addition to the traditional anchors.
Burger King has filed to take space in the food court currently occupied by Neighborhood News and Freshen's Yogurt.

What a waste of space. You can eat Burger King anywhere. The mall should have unique food. I'll say the same for Popeyes too. I won't include Chick Fil A because there was a time when they were only in malls with no stand alone locations.

Haha, what? Mall food courts are for quick eating. That's it. Lolol. 99.99% of food courts in malls have the same 6 or 7 restaurants, or types of restaurants.

I can't think of a better place for a fast food restaurant to be in a mall food court.

And they are typically not places you can drive anywhere else in town and eat except at the mall. Sorry it's my opinion. Enjoy your Whopper at the mall.

jn1780 10-28-2024, 04:03 PM Frozen Yogurt place didn't last very long, that was where Subway used to be. Very interesting to see Burger King move in when as a whole they are on a decline. There's no burger specific place currently in the mall, so maybe that will be enough for them to get some favorable market share.
bamarsha 10-28-2024, 04:38 PM In my opinion, mall food courts should be primarily fast food, up to causal fast (like Q'doba). Malls may have nice restaurants in other areas typically with direct access from the outside, though (not a requirement). The food court is for those shopping at the mall to grab a quick bite, not for a 1.5 hour lunch (wastes shopping time)... who wants to eat a steak in open seating like that? This view may be from growing up with the nearest mall over an hour away, though... but even now, I don't go to the mall to eat, I go there because I need something and the food court is convenient with options for everyone (typically). Plus, you can get waffles fries from CFA, a taco from Taco Bell, and a slice of pizza from Sbarro's all for one meal (or whatever foods)!
