I was told by the Dippin Dots guy from the Loud City concourse, the arena has been in talks in joining the Southeast Conference. ;)

i had a long conversation this weekend with someone who would very much be in the "know" about this, that told me a story about how it was a done deal with one of the companies many people on here think it could be, and that it feel apart due to a pretty minor issue of the Thunder Organization not wanting to budge at all. and so they went with a second option after that fell through. I'm curious if that caused it to slow down just a bit. because it sounded like until the impasse, it was a done deal and ready to go.

The NBA Draft is this Thursday, so maybe the Thunder are waiting to announce arena naming rights around then?

i am guessing the Paycom was the deal that didn't cross the finish line??

If I recall correctly--and I very well could not be--the Downtown Design Review Committee has to approve the new signage and someone said they would announce who it was when that review/approval was set to occur. The committee's next meeting is August 17.

The arena issue is on the DDRC agenda today.

The meeting started at 1 so it's probably already been approved.

I would expect an announcement this week.

There is a Target reference in the design review committee video. I’m not sure if it was a reference to the type of lighting used or if Target is the new sponsor.

Target Center is in Minneapolis. I guess there could be two arenas named Target. Not sure if there currently are two with the same name though now.

Until recently there was an American Airlines Arena (Miami) and an American Airlines Center (Dallas).

Maybe the minor issue was the thunder not wanting the words "travel stop" on the arena

Would be totally fine with Target if it led to them placing some sort of mini-HQ in OKC.

Adding an LED light ring around the top and entrances.

Should look really sharp.

Happy to see it tied to a growing technology firm based in OKC. The various other options would have been fine, but this is really good for the city from a positioning and outward perception standpoint.

I think the name itself is fine, colors are fine, but I do not like that it's all lower case and that Center is italicized. Makes it look cheap IMO, but other than that it's better, if not for the simple fact it's less wordy.

Eh, probably time for a rebrand any way. Would love some green and actual integration of Thunder / lightning in the logo and branding.

David
07-27-2021, 08:53 AM
I definitely like the lighting improvements if that is the real, final design. Plus, I assume the broadcasts using the arena as their backdrop will be forced to pick up new imagery for it and hopefully that might include some nice views of Scissortail, the Omni, and the Convention Center. Too bad the land on the south side of the arena hasn't been developed by this point.

And yeah, Paycom is good branding for the city on a national and international level.

i am guessing the Paycom was the deal that didn't cross the finish line??

so either paycom got over the Thunder Organization using their chief competitor in ADP, or maybe they were able to get that to change too... But that is what i heard caused Paycom to possible step back at the last minute. maybe that was just a ploy to see if they could get a better deal? but i could also see that they really wanted to get the Thunder to switch. But if the Thunder didn't switch, then i guess it wasn't as big of an issue as i was led to believe.

Chad Richison, Paycom’s founder and CEO, said, “Oklahoma City is home to thousands of our employees, and I am happy that Paycom Center will be the home of the Thunder. We are committed to our community and remain focused on the future as we support the home team.”
