View Full Version : Paycom Center (formerly Chesapeake Arena)
gopokes88 04-08-2020, 10:17 PM So, if Chesapeake as a company goes under, what happens with the naming rights?
Some of you reallllllllly need to learn the difference between chapter 11 and 7.

I do understand the difference. The main thing I should make more clear is if Chesapeake is forced to sell, will they continue with the naming rights in 2023, most likely negotiations will start in 2022.

All new seats are planned for The Peake; not sure if this will be the color, however this was part of a renovation pic; would you feel okay with a different seat color.

I would love a different color. I'm old enough to remember when arenas in the 1960s-70s had brightly colored seats (like the red in The Incomparable Myriad).
Bill Robertson 04-11-2020, 09:38 AM Way too much orange for a Sooner fan! LOL!
Richard at Remax 04-11-2020, 11:40 AM Aren't those just the orange shirts from before a playoff game?
Elton John has rescheduled his Goodbye Yellow Brick Road stop in OKC for January 30, 2022.
Anonymous. 09-23-2020, 09:34 AM I saw this thread bumped and thought maybe it had to do with the Chesapeake naming rights, so I looked it up.
They signed a 12 year contract in 2011 @ $3MM per year with 3% escalation. I put this into excel to see how much it is costing the company, not sure if I did it right, though.

YES. However changes i'm still alive or don't lose my tickets by 2022. I think there should be some kind of security for them. I guess i could put them somewhere safer than my desk.

Take photos with your phone.
They can usually scan the bar codes off the photos without needing a physical ticket.

This, along with space shuttle, is the greatest technology leap of my lifetime.
I remain confused by the purgatory that is "Will Call".

Yep, that's correct. A total of $42.6M paid over the 12 years. So we'd expect the next winner to start at $4 to 4.5M in year 1?
shawnw 09-23-2020, 03:09 PM I'm sure Velveeta can come up with that

Depends if company's still have the stomach to put their name on a building for that much money when that building could be empty for a whole year by a random event.
Probability says its low it would happen again in the near future, but people don't often think in terms of probability.
HOT ROD 09-23-2020, 05:12 PM Get ready for Sonic Arena. lol
BoulderSooner 09-23-2020, 06:15 PM Paycom is pretty much a lock at this point
scottk 09-23-2020, 06:57 PM If the name of the arena changes, there is a lot of interior and exterior signage that will need to be updated. I am thinking about the video walls in the ceiling at nearly every section on the 100 concourse level that have CHK branded on the side, of course the exterior and roof of the building, and also just general directional signage around the city. Ford Center didn't have near the investment in branding inside the arena, and the infrastructure downtown has changed a lot in the past decade with updated signage. (Streetcar, Underground, Hotel waypoint signage).
thunderbird 09-23-2020, 08:09 PM Paycom is pretty much a lock at this point
My money is on Loves. Paycom is weird with their money.
HOT ROD 09-24-2020, 01:04 AM Paycom and Loves already have sponsorships at Chesapeake. Sonic is the only major OKC company with heavy advertising that does not do so at Chesapeake nor for the OKC thunder.
this is why I suspect they’ll take the naming rights as it would be a huge statement for them, an already heavy advertiser that doesn’t have a presence at home.
Laramie 09-24-2020, 07:38 AM Interesting discussion on the naming rights while this Pandemic continue to put our large corporations and small businesses in peril. No one knows how long this pandemic will impact our lives.
Our city/citizens has shown its commitment to its venues like the OKC Zoo, ASA Hall of Fame Stadium (expansion/renovation), Bricktown Ballpark (new seats) and Chesapeake Arena (new seats planned) with updates/upgrades to accommodate use--to name a few.
The funding mechanism is where we need to focus our efforts. The Census--make sure you're counted, so many institutions like our schools will be impacted by these funds.
Mballard85 09-24-2020, 07:57 AM Paycom is pretty much a lock at this point
This would be my guess as well, they advertise pretty much everywhere they can and this is about as big as it gets. They may be a little "weird" with their money, but every decision they make is to make them look good, this would certainly put them in the limelight.

Paycom has done very very well in the last 6 months

Agree, Paycom would benefit from a Thunder sponsorship. Since the Thunder are the recipient of naming-rights revenue--this would be a win-win for both. Really IMO boost Paycom's national brand.
Paycom Colosseum

Proposed exterior with northwest entrance to Chesapeake Energy Arena's $104 million MAPS 4 funds.
'Colosseum instead of Coliseum' would make the name more of a challenge and draw more attention with the ancient spelling format.
Harbinger 09-27-2020, 01:52 AM I'm hoping for Love's Arena, just so I can see everyone thinking they're so original by calling it "The Love Shack".
catch22 09-27-2020, 07:28 AM It would be embarrassing and stereotypical to have our arena be named after a truck stop on international TV.
Rover 09-27-2020, 09:58 AM It would be embarrassing and stereotypical to have our arena be named after a truck stop on international TV. yes, that would be much worse than naming after mattresses or milk shakes. Lol
Rover 09-27-2020, 10:04 AM “Express Center” would be good, but they’d probably want it to be “Express Personnel Center”. But, my bet is Paycom is the odds leader at this time.
Improvements proposed for the arena as part of MAPS 4.
They plan to start in the summer of 2021 and take 5 years to complete.

Paule4ou 12-28-2020, 03:25 PM Very nice......but 5 years, wow.
5 years because: 1) they have to work around the Thunder schedule; and 2) they can only spend money as it is collected.

Ya, good point. Too bad we can't kick the dust up and get after it since we only have 1 National TV broadcast slated this year.

There are a bunch of MAPS 4 projects who are all lobbying to get the MAPS 4 collections ASAP.
The exact order of construction/expense has yet to be determined but I can guarantee you everyone involved with each of these projects will not want to wait.
shawnw 12-28-2020, 03:40 PM I like it all, but actually like the infrastructure improvements over anything else as I want this set of improvements to take this arena to 2035-40 at least.

You can almost count on that given the sway the power brokers exerted over the priorities of the last MAPS.

Laramie 12-28-2020, 05:04 PM IIRC The MAPS 4 Initiative set aside $115 million budget for arena & practice-training facility renovations & upgrades.
$104 million budgeted for the Chesapeake Energy Arena.
$11 million budgeted for Thunder Training & Practice Facility.
A part of the original agreement with the NBA franchise relocation included the arena & practice facility which are city own venues.
https://journalrecord.com/files/2018/11/180919_Beeker_PMW_012.jpg
The arena renderings are nice; hope to see what improvements will be made on the training-practice facility which cost $10.1 million for initial construction in March 2011; $11 million will be used to renovate the training & practice facility (The OKC Blue G-League now uses the original practice facility that was renovated in Edmond when the Supersonics relocated).

The Thunder/OU Medicine partnership is alive and well. Announcement Wednesday. Digital billboards around OKC. And an official name change of the Thunder’s practice facility to Thunder ION (Innovation Optimization Network) powered by OU Medicine.

SEMIweather 12-28-2020, 08:22 PM Question on the expanded south entrances - I was thinking from prior renderings that this area would be semi-covered and there would be a couple of bars and/or restaurants that could be accessed by the general public. Is that no longer happening, or is that going to be separate from what's covered by the MAPS 4 funding?

Nothing is final yet but nothing has changed since their original proposal before the last MAPS vote.
bombermwc 12-30-2020, 07:45 AM Looks good. I'm glad to see the outside added sections finally connecting so they will look less like we added them later...like we did :P
Looks like some really good stuff going in to the place to help keep it relevant for the future. We've still got some room to grow if we need to as well, so that's positive too.
Who would have thought the place would look like this back in the 90's!?
