View Full Version : Summary of Downtown Projects
Spartan 05-22-2011, 01:05 PM No problem Pete, I hope that A) it is helpful to people like us, and B) it helps convince people like SOONER8693 that downtown is a worthy civic investment! So far my evil plan seems to be working..
Would the rennovations at The Regency Tower count towards this list?
Heh, I don't know...good question. What are they actually doing? I mean, routine cosmetic/maintenance work happens on downtown buildings ALL the time.

Spartan, you don't have to convince me of anything. I've been on board for everything that is either directly or indireclty a result of all the MAPS initiatives.
Spartan 05-22-2011, 01:53 PM Ahh okay, my bad, it must have been a similar username that I remember making especially prickly comments about downtown. Sorry for the confusion.
Spartan 05-22-2011, 04:33 PM Ron Bradshaw owns the land and has said he's going to develop, eventually.
Self-correction: I believe I meant to say Bert Belanger, upon recollection.

Spartan 02-05-2012, 04:28 PM It's almost an overwhelming prospect to try updating this thread...
Spartan, that's a good thing!
I keep saying I'm going to put all this in a spreadsheet but that's overwhelming as well.
metro 02-06-2012, 10:03 AM Downtown OKC Inc. used to compile it once a quarter in "Skyline Snapshot" but we all know where that ended up. Honestly I don't know what they do anymore that is newsworthy so this thread is a good thing.

I agree that it's definitely a good thing, and to that end, one of these days when I'm caught up with my studio hours I will brew a pot of coffee and force myself to get this thread updated no matter how long it takes.
Metro, DowntownOKC Inc actually recently updated the Skyline Snapshot, problem is it's only just as comprehensive as it ever was. And I don't even know what their criteria is for selecting a project to list, considering how spotty they've been. However, I don't think professionals with bigger fish to fry can be expected to maintain a comprehensive Internet listing, I guess that's our job? :)

Downtown Oklahoma City abuzz with building (http://newsok.com/downtown-oklahoma-city-abuzz-with-building/article/3648172)
Developers, city officials provide an update on more than $1 billion in construction under way in downtown Oklahoma City.
Published: February 12, 2012
More than $1 billion in construction is under way downtown — at this moment. Some of the projects, most notably the 50-story Devon Energy Center, can be spotted miles away. But others are less visible, and yet more work is on the drawing boards and on the cusp of keeping the construction industry gainfully employed for years to come.
Spartan 02-15-2012, 03:31 PM Articles like that do a good job of chronicling the BIG projects, but there are just SOOO many little and medium sized projects, for example like the 430 Lofts that we just found out about today. I think it's the collective mass of little projects that really do a ton more than anything. A Devon and a highway don't organically cultivate a built environment on their own...
Whenever I get angry about the mismanagement of big projects, like the utter fail that is P180, it does really help to start to think about the little projects instead (except for the ones in Bricktown lol).
knightrider 02-15-2012, 03:55 PM Maybe this is threaded someplace else but what is going up on the east side of I-235 near the lincoln exit? It looks to be about 3 to 4 stories.
knightrider, it's this building:

metro 04-07-2012, 10:37 PM The condos on NW18th
Spartan 04-08-2012, 04:46 AM Not downtown. There's also an amazing amount of northside infill development (http://downtownontherange.blogspot.com/2012/03/north-okc-urban-development-run-down.html).

FYI... if you haven't been, The Banjo Museum on Sheridan, has a re-created Shakeys Pizza stage where they still play on.
As I've mentioned elsewhere, we're in the process of installing a wiki application for the site which work just like wikipedia: articles can be written on any subject and access to edit can be controlled through the vBulletin interface.
So, in addition to long, unwieldy threads we will soon be able to attach a article to each which will allow us to summarize and update the key information for each subject/project.
Stay tuned but this should be setup in a couple of weeks and then we are going to need tons of responsible volunteers to write and maintain the articles.
I'm calling it OKC-pedia (or maybe Okla-pedia) and it will be a great way to keep information separate from, but also directly attached to, general discussion.
Spartan 04-09-2012, 11:47 AM How about Downtown Okiepedia.

betts 04-22-2012, 06:44 PM I think those awnings on the Native Roots side will help LEVEL. I looked inside Native Roots today and the floor is still dirt, so it's going to be awhile. Two more Maywood Brownstones are being finished out, but I don't know if that's for spec or if they have buyers. Is there any news about the Flatiron project? I assumed that was dead. I also heard today that the building on the SW corner of Oklahoma and Main is under contract, although I don't know to whom or if it's for sure.
Spartan 04-22-2012, 06:48 PM You mean the Meineke Bldg / Mercantile Bldg? I thought Gary Cotton wanted to do the Mercantile Lofts there.
Do you mean that they're going to start construction on two more Brownstones? What do you mean by being finished out? They haven't built anymore brownstones in a few years.
betts 04-22-2012, 07:00 PM I don't know the name of the building. It's the two story building on the south side of Main street, west side of Oklahoma. And, I was told that by someone who has an office nearby and heard it from someone who owns his building. So, it is just hearsay. When the Brownstones were built, they were only framed on the inside, so people could finish them out the way they wanted. They are finishing the inside of two of them on the north side of the street. I've heard rumors of a couple of new custom Brownstones in the works, but again, just rumors.

they have pretty much said that at council meetings
Spartan 04-23-2012, 10:21 AM Yeah, and I believe they have said that they're pursuing a public/private partnership for a NW10/Broadway garage.
Urbanized 04-23-2012, 02:02 PM You mean the Meineke Bldg / Mercantile Bldg? I thought Gary Cotton wanted to do the Mercantile Lofts there...
Side note: different Gary, although he once DID own that building. Cotton sold the Mercantile building to Gary Berlin a number of years ago.
Fantastic 04-23-2012, 09:53 PM I've only been doing the picture thing on a regular basis for a couple of months, and I really wasn't sure if I would be any good at it, so it makes me happy that some of my pictures ended up in there... thanks, Spartan

Spartan 06-16-2013, 07:00 PM I forgot the Dowell parking garage, which I hope is moving forward or at least going to cover the exposed western facade.
Chad, thanks for reminding me on The Hill. stlokc, it's weird because in person I am pretty subtle and modest, but I'll be the first to admit that my own writing and preferred reading is very bold - so the main reason I do this is just to put together the boldest possible rendition of OKC's urban development boom, which it really has become.
I watched in 2008 as our boom quickly became a bust and in 2009 and pre-Devon when we'd go months and months without a single announced project, despite all the pent-up demand and aspirations. Now we truly are living in the "New OKC," which is more closely resembling that dazzling, cosmopolitan, colorful, sophisticated metro seen in this video that went viral:

ljbab728 06-17-2013, 12:05 AM Great work, Spartan. Much appreciated.
PhiAlpha 06-17-2013, 12:10 AM Great job! I don't think the OU boat house has been called off though. Last I heard, the 6.5 million was going to an additional on campus training facility and the boat house was still ago. That discussion is in the river thread somewhere I believe.
Spartan 06-17-2013, 12:15 AM Well if OU wants to convince us that their project is still a go, they'll need to move some dirt..
Snowman 06-17-2013, 02:14 AM Great job! I don't think the OU boat house has been called off though. Last I heard, the 6.5 million was going to an additional on campus training facility and the boat house was still ago. That discussion is in the river thread somewhere I believe.
It was not called off, the on campus training facility was always a separate project from different funding sources.
BoulderSooner 06-17-2013, 08:46 AM the OU boat house will break ground in the next year .. it is in their capital projects report to the regents ..and is funded ... in no way is it "almost definitely off"
that said .. thanks very much for putting this together
soonerguru 06-17-2013, 12:26 PM Nice work, Spartan!
Spartan 06-17-2013, 02:47 PM Appreciate it, all.
Maybe OU will break ground on the 10 year anniversary of the project's announcement? That would be nifty
OKCisOK4me 06-17-2013, 03:51 PM I'm glad we're not in a recession. Amazing work Spartan!
Praedura 06-19-2013, 11:01 AM Thanks Spartan! That was friggin epic. Truly the mother of all updates.
That must have been exhausting putting that all together. Glad you did, though.
And what's funny (bizarre, crazy, good) is that for all the items that you covered (about 900 it seemed), I bet that there are still some not in there. Trying to keep up with all the development in this town is becoming nearly impossible.
