How much bigger did it look than the Braums one?

Myriad Gardens will look beautiful this holiday season. ALL of downtown will, even with the construction. Especially because of the construction!

You're right , Pete. The previous pics did not even show the rink so you can't comment on the size by them. It should be approximately the same size as any previous rinks downtown.

I didn't realize the one near the civic center was this large.

If you've ever seen the famous one in Rockefeller Center, it's tiny! About a quarter of this size.

Also, there are a few out her in Southern California and they are also very small and almost always packed with people. No real skating can be done, just packs of people shuffling along.

iMAX386

That's a bit disappointing if it's the same size or smaller than the Braums rink by the Civic Center. When it got busy there that one gets packed. I was thinking this one would be a bit bigger.

Wait, really? The one in NYC is a quarter of the size of the Braums one we had by the Civic Center? Surely not.

Here's the Braums one: http://imaginativeamerica.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/imagi_icerink_01_braums1.jpg

Pete

I exaggerated but it's not that big and always packed.

And ones out here are very small.

The one in OKC looks like it's about this size of a regulation hockey rink.

SkyWestOKC
11-20-2011, 03:58 PM
There's no way it's the size of a regulation hockey rink. Maybe about half. It's extremely hard to tell from the pictures, but having walked by it a few different times it is much smaller.

I think the MBG rink is comparable to the Civic Center rink, but perhaps SLIGHTLY smaller. Neither of them anywhere near the size of a regulation hockey rink, but I don't think you'd want them to be. MBG rink seems just right in size, I think.

But Pete's right; the Rockefeller Center rink space is shockingly small in person.

I can tell you from experience that the CC rink was 62 x 150. Not sure how large the new one will be. Wondering why it is hot pink. Maybe that is a cover? I kind of like it!

Kim, I think that pink stuff is the tubing that runs beneath the ice. The ice isn't in place in that pic.

Pete
11-21-2011, 11:28 AM
Thanks Kim!

For comparison a regulation hockey rink is 85 x 200.

The Rockefeller Center rink is 59 x 122.

My wife and I were married at the Myriad Botanical Gardens, October 16th 1999. I absolutely LOVE the changes that have taken place downtown. We are absolutely taking the right path in the fact that we have the advantage of being a young state and therefore get to see how other cities have adopted to their changes and stay ahead of the emerging technology and lifestyle. Good on you Oklahoma.

I'm surprised people think this way and expect the city leaders to do all the work. Wiki is open to everyone and yes, everyone is responsible to update.

Diggyba, the first picture is fine. Leave it until our current landscape grow in a few years. We don't want bare appearance on the Wiki just yet.

Not to derail the thread but several towns, companies, universities, etc hire professionals to recreate their facilites in Google Earth 3D. Check out the University of Colorado and OSU vs OU as an example.

Enjoyed downtown last night for the first time in a while, I pass by downtown daily, but never have time to interact with it. My family and I went to Thunder game last night, but we enjoyed other amenities and leisure activities before the game. We enjoyed Bricktown, Myriad Gardens, and the Arts Festival. But what stood out most was Myriad Gardens, WOW!.

Seeing all the new renovations is one thing, but experiencing and seeing other people interact with the new Myriad Gardens was simply unbelievable. Many people were in Myriad Gardens just simply enjoying life, watching plays, walking, talking, playing with kids, just everyday leisure all wrapped up in one. It was very nice to see all the people downtown between the Arts Festival, Thunder game, and downtown workers.

I could also see how a new tower located at the Preftake's block or the Stage Center would provide even more of a urban dominance and experience in that area, it would greatly enhance the area.

The negatives: too much road work going on, and minimal walkability. The Cox Center is also a negative, it just seems in the way, takes up too much space, a barrier.

If The City is smart, they'll keep the Cox Center there until about 15-20 years from now and then demolish it to make way for the next Thunder arena.

I just got back from a picnic (lunch with the family) Imagine my girls' disappointment when we discovered both the reflecting pool and (most importantly) the thunderstorm fountain were both out of order. There we kids all over the gardens in their swimming clothes looking for something to do. On the eve of the national spotlight I would expect the Gardens to put their best foot forward. Disappointing.

On the plus side, there was a large Ultimate game taking place on the Grand Lawn.

That's a shame about the Thunderstorm fountains. That thing was crazy during the Festival of the Arts.

I will say I was at the Myriad last night taking pics of Devon Tower. It was probably about 10pm at I couldn't believe how many people were walking around. Maybe because it was a warm day and people were coming out at night, but it was still surprising for a Sunday night. I'm really heartened that so many people are embracing the Gardens. It is really becoming a treasure.

In fact, pretty much all of the southern half of downtown was humming. Between the activity with media members at the CHK area, a pretty big BBall game at the courts, Bricktown (which was surprisingly busy) and activity at the Myriad, it was very active last night.

Since I wanted to take my cousin there, I called and asked. They are indeed working on it but its going to take 3-6 weeks. Waiting on parts.

Kind of a bummer as 6 weeks is mid-July. Its also a bit worrying that parts are wearing out that fast.

Pete
06-11-2012, 04:04 PM
That's unacceptable. Six weeks is half the summer.

It's only been installed a year... They need to either keep spare parts on hand or hold the manufacturer to minimum service response times.

In what other business could you get away with a "we're waiting on parts and it's going to take a month and a half"??

Apart from OG&E and street lights, of course. :)

Actually this is not that uncommon. As for keeping spare parts on hand, would you really want the City to spend hundreds, if not thousands, on parts they may never need.

Yes.

They have an annual operating budget of $4 million and this fountain is probably the key draw for kids and has already proven to be wildly unreliable.

After the massive investment made in this park -- with public funds -- this is not an acceptable way to operate it.
