View Full Version : Myriad Gardens
FritterGirl 10-17-2011, 05:45 PM I uploaded about 215 shots today. The batch messed up during the upload process, so the order in which I had batched them, as well ast the tags, and some descriptions are off. I will need to go redo those tomorrow.
Pete, I just finished uploading the second part of the batch, so there are more than those you just saw. Some of my favorites are of the children's fountain, and there are some I took of the Seasonal Plaza with the reflection of the Colcord and First National buildings in the water reflection that are pretty cool.
Overheard while standing at the Children's Fountain after they turned on the rain cycle for the first time: "Today is another defining day for Oklahoma City." Based upon the attendance and enthusiasm expressed by many of the folks who came, I'd say that's about right.
kevinpate 10-17-2011, 05:50 PM Definitely worth the time taken to get it together! I hope to get back up there again this weekend for some more soak it in time.
Steve 10-17-2011, 07:04 PM "Defining day ..." Yep. Absolutely.
Way back when... I got some flack from some for when I first reported on the creation of Project 180 and suggested it would rival MAPS in terms of impact on downtown... the relaunch of the Myriad Gardens is partially why I said what I did. Add to this changes ahead for Bicentennial Park, the addition of several hundred curb side parking spaces, bicycle lanes, reconstruction of downtown streets and other small touches that won't be fully appreciated until they are done... and hopefully you can see what I was seeing.
Yes, I remember that Steve and I believe you are slowly being proven right.
Great photos Fritter! These are particularly cool:

Urban Pioneer 10-18-2011, 10:15 AM Fritter Girl, what's the story about the Koi? Noticed on News OK that somebody was dismayed the big fish aren't back. I liked them too but am assuming that the garden's staff is waiting for the pond ecosystem to stabilize.
Headed down to MG now. Laura is taking her second grade class down there for the day.

What a great day for them to explore! Hope the weather doesn't turn too cold for them.
As for the Koi, you've got it exactly right. They are still waiting to get the all-clear from the City's fisheries biologist before putting the koi back in. A lot depends on weather and making sure the ground water is suffice to keep the lake filled.
As soon as the water is biologically stable and they they get the go-ahead, they'll add the fish back in.
I keep hearing "in just a few weeks," so barring any other weather incidents or strange circumstances, it should be soon.
I moved all the Thunder / poodle posts to the Poodles thread.
Please stay on subject... Thanks!
Urbanized 10-19-2011, 05:34 PM Even more on the water/Koi thing that I found interesting is that the naturally-occurring water that comes from the water table is what they are looking for. The lake in MBG is typically at the natural water table elevation for that area of downtown. Remember how they had to continuously pump water out of the hole they dug for the Devon Tower foundation, and at one point they had a big wet hole in otherwise relatively dry conditions? It is because they hit the natural water table.
That naturally-occurring ground water is optimal for the Koi. Unfortunately the super-dry conditions over the past year+ have caused the ground water to recede, and they have had to keep the MBG lake full with essentially tap water. That's the same way the fill they Bricktown Canal after cleanings, BTW. The downside is that tap water is chlorinated and has other elements in it that are bad for the fish, so they have to wait until the water table has returned to a normal state and the water in the lake is mostly free of those undesirable elements before re-introducing the Koi.

Thunder 10-20-2011, 02:28 PM That is awesome! Every time I try to go out there to do some night pictures of the lights, they always turn them off. I need to speak to someone about this...about leaving them on.
FritterGirl 10-20-2011, 02:29 PM Thunder, they are on nightly until 11, when the outdoor grounds close. What time are you going out?
Thunder 10-20-2011, 02:32 PM Thunder, they are on nightly until 11, when the outdoor grounds close. What time are you going out?
One time it was around 10, the other times was much later. I think they should leave the lights on all night or else OKC will continue with the reputation of being dead asleep during the night. People say we need more nighttime life going on downtown. Also, people can see it from I-40, so I think its best to leave them on. I'll try to get some pictures next time, but I'm discouraged from posting more pictures on here, because the latest pictures I posted were deleted. I do claim ownership of my pictures.
Doug Loudenback 10-20-2011, 09:53 PM The city's photos on October 15 are gorgeous, far too many to post here. There may be a better link (couldn't find one), but the October 15 photos seem to start here for a slideshow view ... http://www.flickr.com/photos/50408515@N06/show/with/6255117095 ... after clicking the link, you can then scroll through the images.

What has been posted here so far is just the tip of the iceberg. This is just simply marvelous and wonderful, all the way around. "Superior" is simply not a sufficient adjective to describe the job well done, Frittergirl. Dean A. McGee is doubtless watching, smiling ear to ear, and he must be very very pleased and proud that you and your associates have made his vision come true.

Imagine if the MAPS 3 Park was moved north a block so that it connected to the Myriad Gardens and a large portion of it was developed with this type of urban wilderness. I think it would be one of the premier parks in the entire country.

Your accolades are most-humbly received. I assure you my contribution to this project is but a mere speck in the grand scheme of things. I, too, join in the pride of all of our citizens in seeing this come to fruition, and am very excited in the thought that there are many more wonderful things to come as the gardens continue to flourish and grow.

What I don't understand is why this is not obvious to everyone.

Thunder 10-22-2011, 12:40 AM Here is a bunch of pictures. These are so out of order (blame Photobucket). I checked them all in order when uploading from my phone (Android) to Photobucket via the Photobucket app. Most of the pictures have two copies. I think 2 or 3 was taken with regular camera. The rest of them was taken with the Camera360 app (available only on Android, because Android is the leading brand for cellular smartphones). Within the app, I used the Night effect and in the settings, I also have it set to save original pictures. So, when I click, it takes two quick pictures, one regular without flash, then flash with auto light/bright enhancement. You should be able to tell them apart. I claim full ownership of these pictures, but anyone can share around and even use on a postcard.

Thunder 10-22-2011, 12:51 AM There are a lot of people! I was expecting to find a parking in front on Reno, but all of them were full. I found one on the east side. I'm sure there was no event going on in the Ford Center. There was a lot of people walking around the gardens and kids playing. I have also noticed the seriously increased presence of security (most of them prefer using the mini cars). So, despite the rumor/gossip, people are attending and using the whole place.
Great pics Thunder! Love see all the light, people and life in the park.
I love the way the arena looks with the lighting along the top. Does this change color or have any movement?

Doug Loudenback 10-22-2011, 08:34 AM Well done, Thunder!
Thunder 10-22-2011, 08:59 AM It stayed blue. I'm sure they installed lighting with new technology capable of changing colors or action style. Someone will have to answer that. I think its nice for it to stay blue. Its real pretty.
Next time I'm out there for night pictures will be during the Christmas light.
peanutgallery 10-23-2011, 09:20 AM I drove by a week ago early in the morning (dark) and the top of the arena was all GREEN....i was surprised how well it looked in green because I don't even like green. I mostly see it in BLUE all other times. Thats all I know.......tremendous improvement over the old arena!

It is on a program that runs in 30-minute cycles. It will run May - October, so this weekend will be your last to catch it in action until next spring.

dankrutka 10-24-2011, 03:11 PM Where is the ice skating rink located? I haven't figured that out yet from looking at the pictures.
It's located on the east side, north of the restaurant. It is a ground level "fountain" (like the OKC Memorial) now, but converts to an ice skating rink during the winter.

I guess that fountain will be closed and winterized for the season also.
Do they move those tree planters out of way when its time to install the ice rink?
yukong 10-24-2011, 03:33 PM Well is the rink going to be larger than the water area now? Because from the photos I have seen, the area that appears to be a reflecting pool isn't very large. Not large enough for ice skating.

I hope so, thats why I was asking about the tree planters.
Yes, the planters will be moved. That's the whole point of putting the trees in above-ground planters in the first place.
Here are some renderings... The rink will be a nice size and I believe the building on the east side will have restrooms, skate rentals and probably concessions. And if you look at the last photo, the metal light/speaker standards probably de-mark the outside of the rink.
Should be a fantastic setting:

yukong 10-24-2011, 04:23 PM Will the ice rink be just a December/early January thing, or will it run throughout the winter?
yukong 10-24-2011, 04:29 PM Also, is the refrigeration system already in place under the current concrete area, or will that have to be installed each season like the portable rink that was in front of the Civic Center?
The rink will be sponsored by Devon and be open from November 25 through January 1. They will have a DJ on Friday nights and radio teams on Saturday.
I'm sure it's a portable rink, similar -- and maybe even using some of the same components -- to the old setup at the Civic Center.
FritterGirl 10-24-2011, 05:10 PM Pete has it right.
The tree planters will be moved and the new rink will be put up on top of the plaza area. The chiller is actually built underground as a permanent part of of the Gardens. They are contracting out with an outside rink operator who will take care of everything - from skate rentals, blade sharpening and concessions.
Downtown in December will run November 25 - January 1, but the Gardens are looking to have the rink open later than that if they can get the right deal.
More word soon!
Thanks Fritter!
I bet the rink will be popular enough that it could be supported through January and maybe all the way to March.
Hasn't it always been pretty crowded at the old location? There will certainly be more people at the park, near the arena, etc. Plus, it's an easy walk to/from Bricktown.

Sounds great. If we are lucky enough to get an NBA season, I hope the rink will stay open late after the games. I'm sure a lot of people would enjoy that for post-game entertainment, especially with kids. It would also make a great sight to see so many things going on downtown before and after a game.
metro 10-25-2011, 09:27 AM I've never noticed it until now, but that rendering shows a green roof on the restaurant.
Fritter, did it get built out that way or was it scrapped.
Steve 10-25-2011, 10:06 AM The green roof was scrapped.
FritterGirl 10-25-2011, 10:28 AM The green roof was scrapped.Exactly. Was part of an early "what we'd really like to see" plan. As with most projects, however, when budget realities set in, these types of things get pushed off the table.
soonerguru 10-25-2011, 08:52 PM What is the status of the restaurant? Are they still planning OKC's version of Tavern on the Green or will it be more like Shake Shack?
Nichols (he's on the garden's Board) was recently quoted as saying they are being patient and want to find the right operator; something nice (a burger concept was rejected) but not too upscale.
I bet this will move along now that the gardens are generally complete although it would sure help if the NBA season would get back on track.

Nichols may be on the board, but I seriously doubt his opinion holds much sway in this matter.
Ha ha. JK.
;)
I didn't realize the cafe building was so complete:

Bellaboo 10-28-2011, 10:48 AM Can't wait until the Devon Tower is all lit up along with the tube......maybe that'll happen by the end of the year.
I don't think Devon Tower will activate the LED lighting until the crown is substantially finished, as there will be a lot of lighting concentrated there.
And at the rate they are going, that will be a while.

Tell me about it. Almost everyday I look at the tower cam to see where they are with the glass and I think they've put in 2 pieces of glass on the North side over the past month, month and a half.
Bellaboo 10-28-2011, 12:14 PM Yes, and they have a lot of stuff going on up there. What is the red cladding about in the triangles ????? Anyone know ?
I think they are in the process of fire-proofing the steel in the crown.
I didn't realize there is yet more color-changing LED lighting in the water feature next to the cafe-to-be:

Aww Man! Barney pee'd in the pool again!
From a few days ago... Prep work for the skating rink.
This is going to be such a cool scene, especially with the park all decorated for the holidays. I hope Devon does something on their tower even though the full lighting won't be complete for a while.

SkyWestOKC 11-19-2011, 11:49 AM Already pretty much have it done. Was walking through yesterday. I agree about the scene, much better IMO than the City Hall one.
