Not sure if they are around anymore...but I was quite fond of coffee and Strawberry Pie or a Hot Fudge Sundae at the downtown Kip's after working on the Daily Oklahoman night shift when I was a young chap in the 60's...nice waitresses as well...

Not the best I ever had of anything on the menu but not bad in a pinch.

Wasn't there a pool hall upstairs of the downtown location? I remember going there in the early 70s to shoot a few games. It was just a smokey pool hall like they all were back in the day. If memory serves they had a signed pic of Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats as he made the rounds back in the day.

I know there was an upstairs at the downtown location. Don't remember if it was a pool hall or not, though. I remember a 1000 Island dressing burger, before I ever tasted a Big Mac. (Le Big Mac)

I have alot of good memories of the Kip's on S.W.59th and Western back in the 60's. Maybe not the best food but, really liked the place.

Kip's was there first and then one block south later on. Remember the Orange Julious (sp) place?

Hey, I don't remember a picture of Jackie Gleason....But, I remember seeing Minnesota Fats himself there playing...Quite a pool player but, he was playing snooker that night.....or morning...I know it was late or early....

There was one on N.Classen south of 36th. Since there were so many freaks around at the time late 60's early 70's, they more or less instituted a "cover-charge" for sitting in their booth and limited the number of free drink refills.

I only remember it having snooker tables.

Was the Kips furnished in orange art deco with an entryway on the southeast side of the business? Didn't Kips have two levels?

The park had a nice multi-tiered fountain close to the Classen Blvd side.

Memorial Park is where a lot of freaks went to hang out after the cops sanitized The Street (Paseo). AFAIK, the fountain is still there and running, which it never did in those days (65-73). It's been a few months since I've been in OKC though.

When you went up the stairs, you would be about middle ways of the room. The POOL tables were up by the front (main street) area and the snooker tables were towards the back....It seemed the "younger" crowd played Snooker and the others played pool....then again, there was another crowd that did something else way in the back....kept hearing come on seven?????

We used to go to the on on N. May and 28th (or so) for lunch once in a while from NW Classen. Right across the street.

I bought a motorcycle in the Mid/Dell area one February many years ago. I lived in Bethany. It was cold. I stopped at the one at Reno and Meridian. I bought coffee. Partly to drink and partly to stick my fingers in to regain feeling.

OK now I remember. There was a pic of Minnesota Fats and Jackie Gleason shaking hands that was taken at that pool hall. I remember it was signed by both and was in black & white. Is there any old pool halls like that left? We used to go to the old coney island and have a few coneys then go to the pool hall and shoot a few games. I do remember that there was another room there where I always assumed they were playing cards or craps but I never went in there. I think I remember that they had an old shoe shine guy that hung around in there.

Since you also lived in the area, why is it the Blue Goose never reopened after they didn't get popped in the Halloween '72 bust, but weren't open that night?

You could see the Blue Goose from my porch! I don't know.
There was a drug raid around at the end of summer and the

I remember Kip's very well. Loved their coffee and the "Big Boy" burger. First double-decker before the Big Mac ever was thought of. Met with friends there many times after home football games (John Marshall played our home games at Taft Stadium) down the street. Saw two of my favorite gals there for the last time. One is still around, the other passed away a few years ago. I guess I was really poor, because Kip's seemed like a real "up-town" place to me.

In the olden days...I used to swim all day at the North Base Pool in Norman and then walk to The A&W at Flood and Robinson...with a low blood sugar hunger going I would get a quart "Megaphone" (30-cents back then) of the draft Root Beer (wonderful antidote) and sometimes eat a Teen Burger...and sit on a revolving stool at the window...nice memories...

At the state fair was to get the same megaphone root beer and a foot-long chili dog. A&W has not been there some time. The stand was just north of Bozo the Clown.

I wonder now if I could keep some of that junk down today!

I forgot about the chili dogs! They were great there or anywhere for that matter--as a teenager...I used to go after football practice with a buddy to Dunn's Dairy Queen on Porter in Norman (where the Hospital is now) and they had--5-foot-long hot dogs for a BUCK!! God--it was great. We would split this around 4pm...eat 2.5 feet of hot dogs each...then go home and have dinner at 6pm. Ha! In my old age--I have learned how to rationalize the "momentary pleasure/ projectile vomiting" equation pretty well--always a crap-shoot. And I mean the gambling type of crap-shoot...

At A&W in Weatherford (seventies) they had hot dogs for a quarter on Tuesday nights and hamburgers for a quarter on Thursdays (could have it backwards). If you bought eight they threw in a gallon of root beer for free. My stomach still aches.

How much does a Coits regular chili dog cost today? I used to get the 3 footlongs for a buck at DQ back in the day when Del Rancho did make the best Steak Sandwich in town.

But you couldn't beat the footlongs at DQ for the price.

Back in the '60s my mom worked for Dunn's Dairy Queen and they always dreaded "National Footlong Hotdog Day" when you could buy 5 for a dollar. People would buy 20, 50, even 100 at a time on that day. Remember the steamer that they put the wiener and bun in and shot it with steam? That steam would fog the windows that day...never any other day. It was miserable work on a normal day, but terrible on National Footlong Hotdog Day.

There were two A&Ws. The one "in town" was on the north side of Main, on east of the Mark, past Owl photo, but not as far east as Jerry's (which yes, is on the south side of Main). There was another A&W at Airport Road and I-40 on the northwest corner.

The secret to the quantity and success of DQ foot-longs was simple...the DIAMETER...the caliber of these tubes was narrower and you could eat them easier and did not have to wear them in order consume them...Sonic always made a pretty substantial Foot-Long Cheese Coney as well...just avoid them after a couple of six-packs--when they taste the very best!
