I loved the myriand gardens during x-mas but that will not happen this year.. Any news to anything new Pete 10-28-2010, 12:35 PM I think the Myriad Gardens being dark will be the only detraction. I'm sure there will still be the skating rink, the SandRidge tree, the free canal rides, the River cruises, the lights on Auto Alley, etc. Dustin 10-28-2010, 12:42 PM Hopefully ALL of Auto Alley will be lit up this year!! metro 10-28-2010, 01:38 PM Everything is still on track as usual, some venues will change however most of it wasn't at MBG anyways. I think it will be better than ever personally, and next year will only be better as the MBG renovations will be finished and the home of our new permanent outdoor icerink! Thunder 10-28-2010, 02:34 PM With all the lights for the Myriad Gardens not being in use this year....wait....they can put all those lights on trees all over downtown. Problem solved. Now, is OKC smart enough to do that? We will see.... rondvu 10-30-2010, 04:06 PM Here is one of Doug's pics from an downtown OKC Christmas past. I would like to see the decorations like used to be over the streets and light posts in the 60's era shopping centers. Even the piped in Christmas music is quite festive. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a49/DougLoudenback/browns/browns_christmas1946_ohs.jpg Platemaker 10-30-2010, 04:36 PM With all the lights for the Myriad Gardens not being in use this year....wait....they can put all those lights on trees all over downtown. Not a bad idea. kevinpate 10-30-2010, 04:50 PM Or hang them on the street closed signs. wait, they probably don't have that many lights. dankrutka 10-31-2010, 12:47 PM Or hang them on the street closed signs. wait, they probably don't have that many lights. I worked for Batten Floral 1972-73 delivering flowers. That winter I got to help decorate a few of the downtown merchants' facades with living garlands and decorations. Fun and memories. (sigh) ljbab728 10-31-2010, 11:53 PM It will be interesting to see what the Devon Tower complex comes up with for Christmas decorations. The new tower and the rotunda would both offer great venues for a number of design options. Doug Loudenback 11-01-2010, 05:41 AM I certainly concur with the thoughts expressed above. After seeing Auto Alley's amazing show from last year, I'm expecting this year's AA decor to be even better. Why is that Thunder? All it takes is a little money, desire, and effort. metro 11-02-2010, 08:51 AM Thunder - "OKCTalk's shock jock" Dustin 11-02-2010, 03:35 PM That was in OKC? :-O I never knew OKC was capable to have lights at this scale... Doug Loudenback 11-02-2010, 07:40 PM That was in OKC? :-O I never knew OKC was capable to have lights at this scale... At Crossroads Mall, perhaps. Just kidding. Steve 11-10-2010, 03:46 PM My understanding is there will be more "drape" lighting on Broadway and more Christmas lighting along the Bricktown Canal this year, both thanks to Downtown OKC Inc. Patrick 11-10-2010, 04:06 PM So does OG&E just get a pass this year, or are they contributing in some way to Downtown in December? Steve 11-10-2010, 04:11 PM Yep. They're helping with the Bricktown lighting Doug Loudenback 11-10-2010, 06:50 PM Here's a thought ... construct a facade along the boards keeping people out of the Devon construction areas ... get the kids from CSU who did the murals along Gaylord and in Bricktown and have them design and make murals of downtown OKC gone by ... e.g., John A. Browns, Rothschilds, etc. ... and decorate the murals with Christmas lights circa 1940s-1950s. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a49/DougLoudenback/browns/browns_christmas1946_ohss.jpg Just a thought. OKC@heart 11-10-2010, 07:28 PM I like the way you think that could be a cool attraction to an otherwise vacant area devoid of holiday trappings. I hope that Devon ends up doing a lot for the Christmas hollidays as far as decorations are concerned. One of the best I have seen in recent memory are the decorations that take place anually at the Hunt Oil building in Dallas along woodall rodgers. It is the curved facade structure that you see now in almost every shot of that stretch of downtown Dallas. They have the space surrounding the tower decked out and huge like 15-20' tall nut crackers on each side of the entrance doors and garlands everywhere. Just looks fantastic. Tried to find images of it online but haven't turned up anything yet. CaseyCornett 11-12-2010, 01:58 PM Downtown in December's events kick-off the day after Thanksgiving with the SandRidge Christmas Tree lighting just east of Leadership Square in "Couch Park" at 5:30 p.m. (Nov. 26). |
