The interests of the train horn manufacturers, the train horn installers, all of the potential collision victims who weren't actually victims, the people who like the sound of train horns, the people who didn't have to hire lawyers to sue the railroads for "Failure to Properly Warn At An Intersection On Account of Silent Trains" . . . and the families of all the above.

Except for those of the lawyers.

Train Noise Bad
Nah, not really
Is so
Is Not

I was right, that really is much simpler

Just the facts

Horns will still be installed. As for everyone else on your list, what if they could get better protection without the noise? Doesn't that seem like a win-win for everyone?

I forgot to mention The Future Generations that would be deprived of the sound of a train horn blowing, except in YouTube videos . . . And simultaneously deprived of the opportunity to decide whether they like the sound or not.

Train Horns: For The American Children and Their Freedom of Choice.

(Plus they would lose the inherent meaning of that line in "Folsom Prison Blues" about the "lonesome whistle"....)

You can sure go ahead and create a Disney like resort where all kind of trains are honking loud for our kids.

But many more kids and adults would like to have a quiet night to sleep ... all over the USA .... what about their interests?

Maybe that tiny demographic (in the second sentence) should move to a house away from a railroad track . . .
Like closer to an airport/Air Force base.

torea

By the way trains will always need to honk in emergency situations , our kids will be bvery happy to hear this!

The FRA rules mandatory 4 times honking imposed on every train for every railroad crossing, day and night.

This is completely ridiculous, and cannot be defended by any semi-romantic consideration!

RadicalModerate

There is yet another one honking (two miles away).
It is The Sound of Manifest Economic Transportation Destiny.
And it is two miles away.

(Over there around Light Bulb Suppy . . .
A last-minute stop for romantic Christmas Shopping
if you were unable to make it to Zales.)

I suppose, in your Revisionist history book, Horace Greeley would have said:
"Stay East, Young Man, and Sleep With The Country."

But seriously . . .
Wouldn't it be simplest and most cost effective to change the signage that the engineer/train-driver has to abide by, horn-tootingwise?
Or do the locomotives now have track-sensors that cause the machines to honk automatically?
And how do those track-sensors recognize an emergency?

Are you familiar with the German word: Schlimbesserung?

Uh oh . . . Now I'm hearing those annoying sirens . . .
I guess someone didn't pay attention to the train "whistle" . . . =)

torea

Well, to keep it simple: We don't ask cars and trucks to honk 4 times for every road crossing.

No track sensors or German & Greek wisdom needed.

Just trust the driver's judgment. These people have eyes and don't need an FRA to force them to honk 4 times at every crossing again and again.

Even you only honk your car in emergency situations. (I hope not 4 times at every green light)

To keep it simple . . . (as I know that the bleeting, incessant of the trains, etc.....=)
1) German and Greek?
2) As soon as the No CyberDevices, in use, in moving vehicles is enforced as strictly as seatbelts.
3) I never honk my horn. I'm not even sure where the horn button is. I prefer to drive defensively.

So . . . (Regarding annoying things):
What about those pesky Four Wheeled Boom Boxes . . . in Traffic?

and . . . uh . . . the court finds in favor of the non-complaintant.
(you know . . . annoying noise . . . traffic distractions . . . good . . . bad . . . whatever . . . =)

now . . . on to that "Boom Box" thing . . .
so . . . are you suggesting that there is any valid comparison between the noise that railroad trains make--in reponse to automotive path crossings--crossings at which a significant percentage of automobile "drivers" are distracted by cellphones/thumping basses in the trunk to a point at which silent trains could contribute to the accident?

I think not.
Let me rephase that: I don't think so.

Driving defensively does not help when you see a deer or a dog in the middle of the road. Honking your car might help in these situations. Same for the train engineers:
They could use their loud horns in these situations too, including when they see stupid drivers cross the railooads while red lights are flashing, bells are ringing and arms are down.
A small camera in front of the train might register these car drivers risking their lives. This would avoid unfounded lawsuits and even allow police to find and fine these few exceptional idiots.

Oh, and for the record, you and I have already had the "car being required to blow their horn" 'argument'. LOL (don't bite the bait RM, it's old and used=)

The initiative for this blog "2010 and trains still have to blow horns?" came from someone in OKC indeed.
If you want to limit participation and comments to the people living in your great city, you might try to find an internet provider limiting access to the OKC borders.
But I sincerely like life and the open minded people in the United States of America.

Didn't we recently read comments from another "intruder" from Philly, traveling all over the US?

Actually he lives in Jacksonville and is on a business trip to Philadelphia but he is from OKC and comes here often so his point is highly accepted by everyone on here but he also doesn't get on here and complain about only one thing (even though it feels that way). Also, the fine city of Oklahoma City accepts your compliment with pride. =)

This thread needs to sincerely get closed. All the petty arguments with Torea (including my own) have led to no positive movement within or beyond this thread. If this thread is to be deleted and Torea decides to start another one with 2012 in the title, I believe he should be banned from this site, considering he hasn't said one thing regarding any other issue on this site!

Well guys, besides our messages exchange (I mean you all criticizing my point of view), not a lot was said at all on this blog during last year.
Probably that’s what you want anyway, everyone has to shut up about this huge train noise pollution problem in the US ....
Let me guess your profession: some of you might work for the FRA, others for railroad companies.

Since you all complain about lawsuits after car accidents with trains ... you most probably work, lobby and look only at the interests of the railroad business. And everyone else has to shut up, learn to live with - or move away from these extremely noisy trains.
Congratulations to keep living in the 19th century , your Jacksonville (OKC originated) participator was right in his or her comments.

Nah, it's not fair for anyone to ever suggest JTF complains about one thing. He complains about lots of things, and at times for good reason (maybe more times than he gets credit for.)

I understand you loud and clear: Neither you nor your children will ever see high-speed rail in the USA. You and some other writers on this blog prefer to continue to live in the 19th century.
You consider the train horn blowing noise pollution as heavenly whistling, as beautiful music, in short: comparable to Country and Western songs.
Just wait and see in a couple of years the oil prices and we will talk again!
(By then, this blog might be called 2013 and trains still have to blow horns?)

Um, no, you're wrong, I don't like train whistles (had to listen to them extensively for 15 years while living in the Chicago area and Seattle area), and I truly wish we could get high-speed rail here in the USA. The reality is that we probably won't get it implemented due a number of factors, sadly. I'm all in favor of progress and wish the USA (especially Oklahoma) would do better on that front.

I agree, Thunder, let’s go back to the topic:

Forcing train engineers to blow the loud horns 4 times before every railroad crossing makes in my humble opinion no sense.
But that's exactly what the FRA enforced when their new rules became final in 2006. Many people living around these railroads noticed this noise level change and frequency level.

This new FRA rule does not reduce the number of accidents.
People who want to cross railroads while red lights are flashing, bells are ringing and arms are down will not stop for the noise of these horns. They are drunk, stupid or suicidal.

I don't understand why the US is the only place in the world where trains are forced to create this kind of noise pollution.

Could someone please explain? (without emotional arguments)
