Preserving the 'Reel' history of Oklahoma City!
Author of Oklahoma City: Film Row (http://www.arcadiapublishing.com/9780738583815/Oklahoma-City--Film-Row) (August 2011): Located in downtown Oklahoma City, Film Row once flourished as a sales hub for theater owners needing films, posters, and concessions for their Midwest venues. The film exchange offices along this three-square-block area and across the cityscape housed major film production studios like Paramount Pictures, MGM, Universal, Fox, and Warner Brothers from 1907 until the 1980s. But changes in demographics, economy, and technology nearly wiped their memory from the city landscape. Now these decades-old structures and their nearly forgotten history are being rediscovered and utilized once again for business. This book tells their story through rare images discovered in shoeboxes, back rooms, and the Oklahoma Historical Society's archives. Most of the images within these pages are shared here for the very first time.
There will be a pocket garden fronting Sheridan Avenue. The garden has been designed as an outdoor break and work space for employees. Pedestrians on Sheridan will see a set of bleachers meant to address the street and literally view the street as theatre. This feature is both an homage to the District's history as well as a screening element to shield the more private areas in the garden. A tree shaded central court will have a fountain and built in benches, lounges and low wood seating. The North end of the garden will feature a large wood deck and arbor designed to accommodate cafe seating, lectures and events. A living wall will separate the garden from the Parking area to the North. Additionally, a rain garden will capture and cleanse runoff from the parking lot.
A palette of low water use, high heat tolerant plants will create year-round interest with colorful blooms, textures and smells. The garden will be well lit at night with LED fixtures.

OKCTalker 08-14-2012, 01:19 PM I was in the Paramount yesterday and got the grand tour. They have done a great job of renovating and keeping the "old" features in tact. They are going to be a great addition to film row. The screening room is also a great venue and is pretty much original. they plan to show classic and other films several days a week.
Had lunch there today. The menu is very limited but may expand (an oven repairman had just arrived), and the prices seem unsustainably low ($5.00 sandwiches, $2.00 grilled cheese sandwiches, $1.85 PB&J, $5.00 fruit & cheese tray, $1.25 coffee, $2.75 soup). No frills - sandwiches in Saran Wrap, pickle spears served from a jar, soft drinks in cans, chips in bags, individual snickerdoodle cookies, served in plastic baskets. Napkins in a single stack instead of dispensers. Looked like a soft opening, so kinks should be worked out soon.
Projection room annual memberships are at a price determined by the individual, minimum $5.00. The room seats around 50 and rents for $100.00/hour with projector, $50.00/hour without.
A nice addition - hope it works.

Spartan 08-15-2012, 10:44 PM LAUD - that looks fantastic. This is a great addition to the Film Row streetscape, I love it any time that significant greenery can be added without tearing down any buildings. W. Sheridan past Walker does feel extremely asphalty, so this I hope this will help curb that.
Steve 08-16-2012, 09:40 PM laud, I'm confused - what property is that attached to?
Spartan 08-16-2012, 10:35 PM Corner of Dewey and Walker, it's the rendering standing in front of Dunlop Codding.
Very cool addition to this district... The Hart Building must be getting close to complete and will add tons of workers and life to the area.
Tuned in to OKC: KOSU to open Film Row studio
NPR affiliate KOSU will expand its presence in Oklahoma City when it opens a studio in Film Row’s Hart building next spring. The radio network plans to build a 4,000-square-foot studio that will include a small space for musical performances and other events.

Great fit! Will this also be a relocation of The Spy studios (from 11th?), or just an addition for KOSU? I can't immagine they are moving too much from Stillwater.
Spartan 12-27-2012, 11:04 PM KOSU is doing some great stuff. But for some reason when I listen to Ben Allen's voice in the morning... it doesn't exactly conjure an image that is analogous to Film Row
Mr. Cotter 12-31-2012, 09:45 AM Ben Allen isn't nearly as funny as he thinks he is, but I don't mind him as much as some other people I know.

What else is going into the Hart Building?
From a Steve Lackmeyer article last February:
Firms moving in later this year will be Fudge's Claims Management Resources and Advanced Subrogation Resources, with 115 employees; Credit Collections Inc., with 45 employees; and Ferrell Oil, with 15 employees.
There was also a lot of talk of re-opening the International Photography Hall of Fame on the ground floor, but perhaps that fell through and now they are going with KOSU?

Minor critique: lots of interviews, which are fine and informational... but it would have been nice to have less "talking head" footage and more shots of the area. Nevertheless, some good stuff in there.
OKCbrew 01-18-2013, 10:18 AM Ben Allen isn't nearly as funny as he thinks he is, but I don't mind him as much as some other people I know.
Ha! Ben Allen! I used to cringe when I heard him make his strange and obscure cracks about the weather but now I must admit I get a little disappointed if he's not in and I don't get my cheesy forecast joke presented in the finest monotone.
It's cool to know my favorite station will have a bigger presence in OKC - Film Row was never an area that I payed much attention to, but driving through after quite a long time I found myself saying "whoa what the heck is all this!?"
Might have to visit the paramount for lunch today!
Praedura 01-18-2013, 01:08 PM A fun video by Marc Flemon featurning some local artists

This was at the IAO gallery, back in August -- specifically, this event
Individual Artists of Oklahoma » [ephemera] (http://iaogallery.org/wordpress/ephemera)
musical performances by: Tig Blues, Fifth Fret, & Chris McCain
special performance by: Break-Thru Hip-Hop/OKC B-Boys
Unfortunately, Flemon decided to overlay his own selection of music, rather than letting us hear the live performances, which is a bit of a bummer. Still, a good video. Love watching the breakdancers.

Just received an update on the ambitious Hart Building...
CMR / ANSR (main tenant) move in beginning of March 2013. Estimated completed finish date will be mid April 2013.
Health Nut Café is still planning to open on the ground floor.
Photography Hall of Fame possibility seems to be dead, and that space (along Sheridan) has been redesigned for KOSU.

Shipwreck 03-19-2013, 12:55 PM Hey gang,
My name is Bradley Wynn, Historian for the new Film Row business district downtown. I wanted to put up a thread where anyone could ask about and get the latest regarding Film Row as I have been getting a lot of questions lately. There is a lot going on there so I can see why, lol!
For those unfamiliar with it, the Film Row district is centered along Sheridan Avenue downtown. It's borders, as established by DOKC and the BiD are from Walker to Classen and from California to Main. Roughly 10 square blocks of some awesome history and development!
Film Row is a concept brought about by its unique history of being a film exchange hub for the southwest. A film exchange was a distribution office established by a film studio. The first appeared in OKC as early as 1907. By 1971, there had been over three hundred exchanges in Oklahoma City. Most of these coalesced along Film Row starting around 1926 until its demise in 1971 as new transportation methods, technologies, and distribution practices made them obsolete. They included every major film studio like Paramount Pictures, Fox, MGM, etc. The only studio not represented early on was Disney as it didn't exist yet.
The vacuum created by urban renewal nearly wiped out this history and resulted in the area filling with former bars, drugs, prostitutes, and vagrancy, earning the old moniker Skid Row. Most of it became heavily blighted and vacant for nearly thirty years. In 2003, bold advocates and entrepreneurs re-discovered the area's former rich history and created the new district around it.
Today the area is a bustle of activity! Most recently, around 200 employees have appeared on Film Row as new businesses keep flocking to the area. I encourage unto come down and see what we are all about!
I hope to answer any questions or thoughts about the area through this thread. You can also see pics and more by finding us on Facebook under our old moniker, Oklahoma City Film Exchange. The area's official title now is Film Row. You can also read about it in the book, Oklahoma City: Film Row by Bradley Wynn (myself) with foreword by Steve Lackmeyer, available at any book store and on Film Row. The book has nearly 200 images of the are during its heyday.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask...
HangryHippo 03-19-2013, 01:03 PM Thanks for this, Bradley.
Thanks, Bradley.
Love this district and it's really starting to roll.
Has anyone moved into the Hart Building yet? If not, when will that start to happen?
When does the cafe open? What about KOSU??
Shipwreck 03-19-2013, 01:57 PM Move-in started on the hart bldg about two weeks ago. As far as I know, after KOSU and the Health Nut Cafe move-in this early summer, the bldg will be 100% occupied. The construction on the south is for the new parking lot and build out continues on the interior for the remaining spaces occupants. You would be shocked at the interior. Perhaps one day in the near future a tour can be arranged on a Saturday. I know the idea of an open house next year has been briefly discussed as it will be the tenth anniversary of district development. As u can imagine, they are really focused on finishing move-in and getting settled. I would also note that rumor has two more signs emerging on the bldg, one possibly being neon.
Thanks for the info.!
And what about the little building immediately to the east? When is that due to be complete?
Shipwreck 03-19-2013, 02:02 PM Btw...the first Monday of every month I welcome people to join me for FRUNCH (Film Row lunch) at high noon on film row. The location rotates between eateries there. April will be at The Paramount, May at Joeys, etc. like I said in the previous post the Health Nut may be open this summer and we will start eating there too. We would really like to see maybe a burger/classic American food place on the row. Spread the word.
Shipwreck 03-19-2013, 02:07 PM Thanks for the info.!
And what about the little building immediately to the east? When is that due to be complete?
That is the former Eagle Lion Films exchange. A photo of it is on the Facebook page in one of the photo albums, if I'm not mistaken. That space will be built out by an awesome design firm in the near future. Unfortunately, I can't give you an exact date. But what they have planned is really cool and amazing for the area.
Shipwreck 03-19-2013, 02:12 PM Just posted a photo of the Eagle Lion Films bldg I just posted about above on our Facebook page.
Shipwreck 03-19-2013, 02:16 PM Here is a link to our Facebook page. I've been working off an iPad and haven't figured out how to share links yet. LOL! Also, below is the official logo for the area, as you will see along Film Row.

The logo is protected. Just contact Downtown OKC for use. We are also in the stages of creating our Film Row Business Association (this was a question that arose during Steve Lackmeyer's last online Chat session) and our next meeting is at 6pm, second monday of next month in The Paramount's screening room.
UnFrSaKn 03-29-2013, 04:37 PM According to Bradley, parking meters are going up along Film Row.

UnFrSaKn 04-01-2013, 03:17 PM Had a great time at FRUNCH (Film Row Lunch) today with Bradley. When you get two history guys together who have thousands of old photos, it's usually a good time. He took me on a tour of the Hart Building and the renovations are unbelievable. We had two RetroMetroOKC meetings in a row there a few years ago and it was pitch dark with nothing but dirt and construction equipment. To see it today as a modern office space is amazing. I took some photos I will share later.
By the way, Bradely told me and the woman who runs the Paramount where we had lunch that no, in fact they are not installing any parking meters. Next month's FRUNCH will be at Joey's.
Can't wait to see the photos of the Hart building... I've heard amazing things.
Love that Film Row.
UnFrSaKn 04-01-2013, 03:29 PM Yeah, he asked if I would take some panorama photos on my phone so he can send to someone involved in the building. You would love the vintage restored Indian motorcycles they have on display.

Soooooooo cool!
Can't wait for KOSU to go into operation and for the Health Nut Cafe to open.
Thanks so much Will!
UnFrSaKn 04-01-2013, 05:11 PM When me and Bradley left, he was hoping maybe after Joey's next month, we can get in there the following month or soon after like this summer. The whole building felt top notch. They must have had some of the best painters, electricians, and flooring in the city.
Shipwreck 04-02-2013, 11:40 AM The Hart building is indeed an amazing place now. We actually only walked through the main corridor and to the front desk, to see the beauty and vast difference made inside. In the photos above, along the ground floor, the large glass window you see across (left) of the large metal sliding door is the future broadcast studio for KOSU. The Health Nut Cafe will be moving into the far NW corner of the property where it is wrapped in big windows on the exterior. Due to time, I didn't get to show the back of the building and its new cool parking areas and lighting. Perhaps Chip might allow one more Retro Metro meeting in Hart this year sometime after the new businesses there get completely settled. It is certainly a far cry from the construction site we have been watching for awhile. I've spoken with many of the employees in passing and they absolutely love their new digs! As for parking meters, the City stated that it was at the request of the business owners that meters would not be reinstalled along Film Row. This probably applies to just Sheridan Ave and not California and Main. Please join up for FRunch (Film Row Lunch) next month at Joey's Pizzeria, 701 W. Sheridan, first Monday of May at Noon where we will continue talk about Film Row and OKC happenings in general! Have you been to the Facebook page for the area? On that note, I would really like to see the OKC gay district migrate to this part of the city. NW 39th just isn't cutting it. Gay districts in other cities are often in gentrifying areas and contribute greatly to developing a strong and successful area. I don't see how that can continue where it is now.

Actually, the reason it was chosen by the Association is because it will give additional things to do on both ends of town. Truth be told something is on every friday night so it just gives more options.

I wholeheartedly agree and would love to see their offices on Film Row eventually alongside deadCENTER, Slice, KOSU, etc, which are already there.

* The last Friday of this month will launch the first Final Friday for Film Row. We are very excited to have 15 businesses participating and a slew of artists! Check out the IAO gallery website for more details! This will be a monthly event on the final friday of each month.
* Ward 6 meeting will take place at the Paramount at 701 W. Sheridan and will be an awesome way to learn more about what is happening in Ward 6 with Devon, Film Row, and more! The meeting will be on Wednesday, May 2nd from 7:30 - 4:30. Food and refreshments are included.
*FRunch! will be on the first monday of May at high Noon in Joey's Pizzeria. This is a monthly activity where you can join Film Row's historian Bradley Wynn for lunch on Film Row and discuss the latest on the Row and across the city. Monday, May 6th, 12pm, Joey's. June may be at the new Health Nut Cafe in the Hart building as build out there is moving quickly. If not, then at the Paramount.
* Film Row Business Association Meeting will be on May 13th, 6:30pm in the upstairs meeting room of The Exchange (second floor of the Film Exchange building, above Joey's Pizzeria). It is possible that new officers may be voted onto the Board at this meeting and all are welcome to attend.
* OKC Pride Festival will take place on Saturday, May 18th into the evening. Visit this link foor more info: 2013 OKC Pride Festival ? May 18, 2013 ? 11am ? 8pm | OKC Pride (http://www.okcpride.org/pride2013/festival/)
Thats it for now - hope to see you all on the Row!
CORRECTION REGARDING WARD 6 MEETING: nix that - it is for the Youth Leadership and NOT a Ward 6 meeting. Youth in the program are touring the city and Film Row is one of the stops. I do apologize. I misunderstood the info passed on to me.
Mississippi Blues 04-24-2013, 12:50 AM Awesome insight & updates Shipwreck!!
Bellaboo 04-26-2013, 09:53 AM Maybe this is the right place for this. Last night, my 2 nephews from Phoenix were in town for a visit. I offered to show them around. I took them to the Hart Building in search of the old motorcycles that had been posted earlier.
We got there around 9:45 pm....could not see them from the street so we got out to see if we could see them from the windows. One of the nephews walked up to the front door and it was wide open. We walked in, cameras in hand and found them by taking the elevator to the second floor. We took our pictures of the bikes, which are very cool by the way, and left. We were probably there 15 minutes and never saw a soul.........every light was on in the building, FWIW.
Praedura 04-26-2013, 10:55 AM Just found out who made the sign for the Paramount...
It's Oddfab Design Lab (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Oddfab-Design-Lab/50650012599)

They also did the yellow 'Oklahoma Contemporary' sign.
Praedura 04-26-2013, 11:00 AM And evidently, the Paramount job was their first project.
So, a Film Row company making a sign for another Film Row company. Nice.
The fine folks at Dunlap Codding opened up their newly remodeled building and adjacent outdoor space for the first Final Friday on OKC Film Row:

I also want to give a huge personal thanks to Dunlap Codding, as they have provided this site with extensive legal advice.
Obviously I can't go into the details but they have shown amazing generosity and expertise in providing much-needed guidance.
Can't wait to see their space on my next visit -- looks really slick.

Cool.
So is this space meant to be used regularly for events like this?
HangryHippo 05-01-2013, 01:45 PM Kudos to Dunlap Codding. Awesome addition to Film Row.
Douglas 05-01-2013, 03:00 PM Hi Praedura - yes. The goal is to make the space available gratis to arts, creativity, and innovation groups who need a space for a show, small meeting, seminar, concert, etc. We will definitely be opening the doors every Final Friday with art and music and supporting other Film Row happenings - I believe the OKC Pride folks will be using a lot of the space for the festival in a couple of weeks, for example.
So - if anyone has a group or musician/artist etc. that is looking for a unique venue for a small event, let me know.
