View Full Version : OU Projects
FighttheGoodFight 06-24-2024, 10:41 AM Yes, this rendering does not show Couch but it does show a couple of interesting things: 1) Walker would be replaced by 3 buildings; and 2) the dorm at the southeast corner of Cate Center would be demolished
The road there looks to also be taken out. (Hoover/1st Street that goes in front of Adams/Walker between CATE.)
BimmerSooner 06-24-2024, 12:25 PM Thanks for posting that, Pete. I had not seen this before.
Man, I wish they would take out all of the old Cate buildings. Just not any curb appeal whatsoever driving through arguably the most important thoroughfare through campus. I know they are not dorms anymore, but nevertheless, something that makes a more impressive drive. I've long dreamed of a long stretch of buildings replacing those that are like residential colleges of Dunham and Headington. I personally think that would look incredible.

A lot of them are at full capacity with either office space or classrooms. Classroom space on campus is pretty much at full capacity for both semesters now. Same with office space. They probably need to expand some campus academic buildings but that doesn't look to be in the plans right now
BG918 06-24-2024, 12:31 PM I remember discussing future OU residence hall plans back when I was there in the mid-00’s. Extending the green space defined by the South Oval was a key design element to link this residential neighborhood to the campus north of Lindsey. Good to see that is still the case.
The rendering doesn’t show it but I’ve heard Cate will also be fully replaced after they replace the towers. We had discussed potentially having that project be more mixed-use with student-oriented restaurants and retail fronting Lindsey -similar to what Stubbeman Village used to be. Hopefully that happens and they can get a small convenience/drug store like CVS or Walgreens to open on the ground floor along with a coffee shop, etc
Rover 06-24-2024, 05:13 PM several of my friends lived in walker in the mid 90's... whenever i'd visit, it felt like going into a prison. from that standpoint, i definitely didn't regret choosing to live with my folks during those years.
I would have missed out to not live in the dorm. Met lifelong friends. After 50 years I'm still close with my Walker Tower roommates and others in the dorm. Like anywhere, it's the people who make the experience, not the fancy furniture or color of the walls. We didn't have the expectations of the ambiance and decor that it seems kids (or their parents) now demand. It certainly didn't feel like prison living there.... unless it was the jail in Animal House. LOL. Good times. Great memories.

Ditto - 45 years ago for me. Lived in it for 3 years. Met my wife and still have several friends. My son was there a few years ago and it seemed 1/2 as big as when l was there.
Jacobson Hall -- one of the original buildings on campus and home of the Visitor Center -- is getting a full renovation plus a 2-level 10,000 square foot expansion.
I was down there today and noticed the entire area between the building and Boyd (the grassy elliptical area) is completely graded and fenced off (last photo). Looks like a new plaza in front of the building as well as significant landscaping.
Really one of the most beautiful buildings in the state and it's highly visible from Campus Corner.

That last picture is one of the areas they’re talking about using for tailgating. I think part of this project will address the longstanding drainage issues of that area.

that was my #1 question when they said that area was going to be opened for tailgating ... really smart to take care of that
bison34 07-06-2024, 03:12 PM Norman has more tower cranes up than OKC. Sigh.
Then you for the pics!

You know, if you look hard enough for something to complain about, you'll most definitely find it.
I wonder if the same is true for looking for something positive.

I'm not complaining for Norman, just hoping spme of the approved projects for OKC start going vertical.
I'm truly glad OU is getting new housing, as those old towers were dingy and fledgling. This is much needed!

Alright. Well, your use of the word fledgling told me all I need to know.

Perfect place for the Inigo Montoya meme!

Missed opportunity.

That is correct. This is the primary purpose. Drainage issues have long been a problem. I think this is a part of the campus being “SEC ready” as the slogan goes. There are a number of small, but not insignificant projects occurring right now no doubt in preparation for the first football game.
I have not heard, but I hope Pete is correct that there will be some enhanced landscaping here. I agree, a gorgeous building and such a high profile lawn along Boyd.
OU just announced the public tailgaiting locations and the area being reworked is included:

FighttheGoodFight 07-15-2024, 03:55 PM Duck Pond tailgate! Finally!
bombermwc 07-16-2024, 07:49 AM You know people are going to read that as, as long as it's not prohibited, it's fair game. lol. They only said "recommended". Honestly, i dont see too many people take that approach, but every once in a while you see some stupid "bro-fest" in short khakis and a polo giving it a go.

I tailgated a few years on a "non-sanctioned" area (the years they stopped letting us tailgate on Lindsey with the new dorms) and honestly no one cares unless you are making a mess or getting the police called on you. We have since moved to a sanctioned area as they opened more up.
Dorms and expanded/renovated Visitor Center:

David 12-02-2024, 08:28 AM Looks so wrong without the brick going up yet in the view of the the south side of the new dorms.
josefromtulsa 12-09-2024, 12:51 PM i was a student worker in Jacobson for 4 years and boy did that building have its quirks. This was certainly needed as even then the building was crowded everyday with all the different tour groups coming and going.
I hope that upstairs conference room is still going to be open during the day to students. It was a prime lowkey study spot (with free coffee).
