Why do things look smaller as they are being torn down? Lol
If you lived in them with a roommate you felt how small they were haha.

Pete 06-06-2023, 08:41 AM Anybody know what the story is with the second story on Stubbeman Village? It always seemed like the weirdest design. I couldn't ever figure out if it was mechanical stuff up there or if it was office space. At least part of that was to accommodate movie screens, as there had been a twin theater for quite a while. But you can see in this photo, they were hauling all types of junk out of that level (through the south door), so there must have been some offices: http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/ou050523e.jpg Urbanized 06-06-2023, 11:06 AM Yes, it was a twin movie theater. In the 80s it turned into a series of clubs; notably Rome. Typically dancing on one side and live music on the other. I saw quite a few great shows there. Nine Inch Nails, Book of Love, Smithereens, Echo and the Bunnymen, local faves like Nixons, Flaming Lips, Chainsaw Kittens, many others. Lots of great memories there. I'll be pouring one out for the old girl. Hard to see here but there isn't much left of the SW tower. (This view is dead west.) You can also see how they are separating the metal from the crushed concrete. Stubbeman is still standing but all the windows are out and it's effectively gutted. Are either of those still going to be occupied during the upcoming academic year? Pete 07-27-2023, 02:26 PM Has it been announced when Couch and Walker are getting torn down yet? Are either of those still going to be occupied during the upcoming academic year? Couch and Walker will remain in use indefinitely. The plan is to tear down one of the towers and completely replace it before they move on to the next. Best guess is one torn down every 3 years or so. FighttheGoodFight 07-27-2023, 04:01 PM Also Walker houses the tornado shelter for the dorms so that one will be up for a while until it can be replaced for safety reasons. I have great memories of the dorms but they were by no means, nice. It's a big part of the push to completely upgrade all the student housing. I lived in Walker as a frosh and when they compared the rooms to prison cells, they weren't far off. The two residential colleges and Headington Hall are both light years nicer, and these new dorms will be the same standard. Will be interesting to see what they do about Cate Center, although that is a lower priority because it's relatively few beds. OU still has a classroom shortage problem so the more offices you can move into those areas that frees up campus buildings for classrooms. I lived there as a freshman the year it was firebombed. And I agree, the rooms were spartan, at best. 4” thick hard mattresses and no springs… like sleeping on the ground. OU still has a classroom shortage problem so the more offices you can move into those areas that frees up campus buildings for classrooms. I’ve heard they will be bulldozed and turned into dorms similar to what is currently getting built. But after Walker and Couch are demolished/rebuilt into dorms. There could be classrooms that are part of those buildings. I imagine the Honors College will also be demolished/rebuilt when they tackle Cate Center. That whole area will be completely different in the next 10 years. The big question is what does OU do with Huston Huffman? They either need to do a major remodel/expansion or tear it down and start over. The location is great in the middle of all this new student housing but every SEC school has a student fitness center nicer than Huffman.. Pete 10-16-2023, 12:50 PM ^ There was a plan to expand and enhance HH over a decade ago but it never was funded. They could use the area directly south as well for an expansion if needed. Pete 10-16-2023, 02:01 PM I would bet that the Cate area ultimately will be used for more classrooms. The university has big growth ambitions and Cate is immediately adjacent to the existing academic buildings. There is tons of room to the south of the dorm towers for housing expansion.
