View Full Version : St. Anthony Hospital
Buffalo Bill 12-13-2012, 02:21 PM I believe it's new to St. Anthony. I haven't seen one there before.
Their current one is on the top floor of the west parking garage. Not convenient to immediate services.
LakeEffect 12-13-2012, 02:22 PM Is the heli-pad new to St. Anthony, or a relocation?
Relocation. They land once in a while on the SW side of the complex (not entirely sure where, but I've seen it go in and out a few times).
CaptDave 12-13-2012, 02:25 PM Is this potentially the beginning of a building boom on other St Anthony properties? Between, The Edge, Osler, and the other businesses and residences; that area is going to give Deep Deuce a serious run for its money. I would have a difficult time deciding between MidTown and Deep Duece now......
Urbanized 12-13-2012, 02:25 PM It almost makes Kaiser's and its wonderful patio feel like a built-in amenity of the hospital.
OnlyOne is right about how important it has been for downtown that Saint Anthony stayed. It was really touch-and-go in the late nineties. Fortunately the City stepped up its commitment to the area at the hospital's request, and Saint Anthony lived up to its promise to do the same, contingent upon the City's investments. I doubt much if any of the great development and reinvestment we are seeing in MidTown would be happening if SA were missing from the equation.
Remember, St. Anthony owns all the properties shown in pink below.
They've already done a lot but seems like there is much more in the future:

Absolutely, this. The most powerful economic development you can do is retaining and growing your existing anchors.
HangryHippo 12-13-2012, 02:38 PM How long does it typically take for a project like this to move from being listed on the design review agenda to beginning actual construction? Do they still have to go through a detailed design process or does applying for review mean you already have the plans in place and can begin soon?

Detailed construction plans are usually drawn up before submitting, unless there is a preliminary submission in order to gain feedback (like Homewood Suites did in Bricktown).
The plans for this project are extremely detailed, so they are probably ready to go pending approval.
HangryHippo 12-13-2012, 02:41 PM Thanks for the reply, Pete. Hopefully it will be approved and work will begin before too long. This is very exciting and another great addition to Midtown.
Spartan 12-13-2012, 02:50 PM What I'm wondering now is if there is still talk of a physician's office mid-rise?
If the Osler does well as a boutique hotel (and I bet it's a home run) perhaps we'll see more hotels built in Midtown.
I bet we will, especially when the streetcar project gets a little further down the line... Would be cool to stay in Midtown with all the restaurants and nice neighborhoods then take the streetcar downtown for business, conventions, etc.
Would also add to the room count for events.
I love what is happening in Deep Deuce but I've always thought Midtown had world-class potential in terms of combining charm, history, culture, nightlife, and living.
With the fantastic success of everything that has already been completed, you get the strong feeling the area is on the verge of greatness and I think the streetcar will be the thing that pushes it over the top.
Exciting stuff!
HangryHippo 12-13-2012, 03:10 PM I would think so. The plans for this addition appear to be ER, ICU and step-down units. A physician's office would still be needed, I think.
Spartan 12-13-2012, 04:23 PM Well I thought the rumor going around last year was of a private physician's group considering something around 6-10 stories.
Something needs to go on the flatiron block immediate across 10th Street from this addition.

I had heard that rumor once upon a time as well, but it's been awhile since I've heard anything at all about such plans.
You're right about that flatiron block. What sits there currently is an absolute waste of what is turning out to be a prime location. Maybe this will spur a little more housing to the south of St. Anthony now.
catch22 12-13-2012, 04:28 PM Looks good. I do wish the side facing 10th was pushed out to the street a little more, but it appears to be landscaped well on that side though with the wall hiding the ambulance ramp.
I'm also glad to see they are integrating the site well with Kaisers.
Spartan 12-13-2012, 04:40 PM I had heard that rumor once upon a time as well, but it's been awhile since I've heard anything at all about such plans.
I think Lackmeyer even covered it. Some of you guys should ask him about that during his chat tomorrow.
Rover 12-13-2012, 05:07 PM I'll bet Kaisers is thrilled to have that big ole cooling tower right next to them. Those can be plenty noisy. Maybe they are trying to be irritating enough to get them to sell. And, by where they positioned it, it could be noise pollution for the immediate area and any outdoor seating. The noise will likely be line of sight to 1212. Hope they have some noise suppression on it.
Doug Loudenback 12-13-2012, 09:07 PM Well, since I was born in St. Anthony's in 1943 and fully expect to die there full circle on one day or another, I could expect nothing less of St. Anthony's than a fine project such as this.
edcrunk 12-13-2012, 10:11 PM This is pretty awesome! You can find me Monday thru Friday Holding down the Valet stand at the West Entrance. Doug, I was born there too!
Doug Loudenback 12-13-2012, 10:33 PM Well, that's totally cool, edcrunk. We are clearly soulmates. Except that my final pass there will likely be much earlier than yours, and on the south end, at the ER entrance! Just kidding ... kinda sorta. Frankly, the fact that I was born there, and have a good probability of dying there (my home is only a few blocks north), whenever that may occur, gives me a measure of peace ... good karma, one might say, even if I hope that moment of convergence is at least a few years yet to come.

Doug, I think I speak for everyone on here who knows you that I hope that is a ways off. On a side note, my grandpa recently went full circle as you might say at St. Anthony's, and even though it was incredibly sad for us, the care he got was excellent..far better than any other place he'd been. Apparently I'm the first generation in our family to not be born there. Damn these exclusive clubs and all... :P

Oklahoma City's St. Anthony Hospital prepares to build $53 million expansion | NewsOK.com (http://newsok.com/oklahoma-citys-st.-anthony-hospital-prepares-to-build-53-million-expansion/article/3737360)
HangryHippo 12-14-2012, 11:14 AM Were the plans for this addition approved at today's meeting?
Were the plans for this addition approved at today's meeting?
The meeting isn't until Dec. 20th.
The preliminary recommendation from the planning department is to approve, with just a few qualifications.
HangryHippo 12-14-2012, 11:25 AM Thanks, Pete. I have no idea why I thought the meeting was this morning. Whoops.
What were the qualifications?
The only issue was they want more signs than stipulated in the design guidelines, but the planning department recommended a variance be provided.
catch22 12-20-2012, 02:26 AM Was driving through Midtown this evening imagining this project built. Safe to say this project will add a lot of much needed density to Midtown.
HotStuff80 12-23-2012, 05:08 PM Amazing!! Looking a lot different than when I began my medical career there (1959). The only parts that I recognize from that period is the "U" shaped construction with a semi-circular drive between the main hospital and the then, student nurses building.

Did you know a pediatrician named Charles Freeman?
HangryHippo 01-28-2013, 09:56 AM Did they get the dumpster situation sorted with Kaiser's to get this project approved?
Praedura 02-16-2013, 10:58 AM okcBIZ article on this:
okcBIZ: News: Development - Patron Saints (http://okc.biz/oklahoma/article-6637-patron-saints.html)

Joe Hodges, regional president for SSM Healthcare, the owner of St. Anthony, says the expansion is the largest in the hospital’s history.
In the last decade, after deciding to remain in MidTown rather than moving to the suburbs, he says the hospital has invested more than $200 million at that site.
Pretty much about the same info as in the newsok article, but that's a nice rendering above.
St. Anthony is also building a healthplex in Mustang.
http://static.npaper-wehaa.com/pub-files/12293670174946a6e9878be/pub/OKCBiz-February-2013/lib/13595883475109abfb4f6ef.jpg
St. Anthony Healthplex Mustang will include a full-service emergency room, diagnostic imaging, procedural suites and a breast center.
The second floor will house the St. Anthony Physicians Group primary-care and specialist physicians.
That's a fantastic addition to Mustang.
HangryHippo 06-11-2013, 09:00 PM Does anyone know what the work is that's going on to the south of St. Anthony's? It's the lot south of 9th St along Walker, just south of the physician office building. I've heard conflicting stories about what's going on here.

HangryHippo 06-13-2013, 03:15 PM When is construction supposed to begin on this project?
Spartan 06-13-2013, 04:24 PM That's becoming million dollar question
HangryHippo 06-13-2013, 04:27 PM Is the project's viability now in question? Or just a case of hurry up and wait?
CuatrodeMayo 06-13-2013, 04:36 PM Upward Transitions is now officially out of their old building and into their new space on Main.
They have to complete the new parking lot before they can start work on this site.
That is part of this project and it IS underway.
Spartan 06-13-2013, 06:01 PM That's where they used to have a gravel lot south of the Starbucks?
I don't understand how just suddenly upgrading the pavement quality allows a redevelopment of surface parking elsewhere to move forward, but such is life in 2013 I suppose.
ISayGoPokes 06-16-2013, 11:10 AM Utility companies are relocating lines right now- that's the construction on 9th street.
CCOKC 06-16-2013, 01:53 PM That makes sense to me based on where the construction is.
edcrunk 06-24-2013, 12:08 PM Thanks for the reply, Pete. Hopefully it will be approved and work will begin before too long. This is very exciting and another great addition to Midtown.
I got promoted recently, so I spend a lot of time on the Starbucks patio. Last week I overheard one contractor mention to another that he should have started building that day to meet the hospital's projected Dec 2014 finish date.

Interesting. I'm surprised they still haven't started. The relocation of utilities is taking forever, and who knows if that's the only holdup. I don't think there's any chance that they meet that deadline unless they start by mid-July at the latest. There's just too much to be done.
edcrunk 06-24-2013, 03:23 PM One guy was talking about how he was dreading when they start working on 10th & Walker.
edcrunk 07-31-2013, 10:59 AM Talked to one of the guys high up in our mechanical dept and he said the hold up was from OG&E and the City. Work on the 'pavillion' should begin by the end of the year.
Praedura 08-12-2013, 10:55 AM Note from the City of OKC:
Walker between NW 8th and NW 10th will close to traffic starting Monday, August 19.
The closure is anticipated to last for several months while crews install utilities for Saint Anthony Hospital.
Source: https://www.facebook.com/cityofokc/posts/10151554353487312
So perhaps this signifies the beginning phase of the addition work?
HangryHippo 08-12-2013, 11:11 AM They're going to close Walker for months?
LakeEffect 08-12-2013, 11:15 AM Pardon my ignorance, I only work in a utility-based career, but why close Walker for several months?
BoulderSooner 09-26-2013, 11:43 AM When is construction supposed to begin on this project?

Permit for construction trailer just filed.
Looks like they are getting ready to start construction in earnest.

edcrunk 11-09-2013, 07:40 PM The surface lots are getting close to being done. I've noticed a lot of guys in hard hats walking around and pointing over on our drive at the East Entrance.
jbrown84 11-15-2013, 06:20 PM With all the layoffs the other day, is this project still a go?
Spartan 11-15-2013, 08:00 PM I'm not sure this project was ever a large increase in jobs, I know that aspect was never really lauded and you have to think it would be.
jbrown84 11-18-2013, 12:05 PM Well I just meant, do the layoffs signal the company is doing poorly and may put this on the back burner?
HangryHippo 01-05-2014, 04:56 PM I drove by this area today and there's a building right in the middle of their new parking lot that's to the south of the current Physician's Building. It had a sign on it that said "the Century" I think. Why did they leave it standing? Are there plans for the building?

They don't own it. It is hotel by the week/month kind of place

They couldn't have bought it out? It looks rundown and more than a little seedy.
Urbanized 01-15-2014, 05:47 PM Yeah, hopefully someone with a little vision gets control of that place. It is a great little example of Art Deco that obviously isn't being well-maintained. With a little TLC and refurb it would make a great office building or some awfully cool and high-end residences.
