I wish the Root well, but I wish they wouldn't charge the $5 cover when it isn't busy or there isn't a band playing. Having a cover charge when there is maybe 4-5 people in the bar isn't good business practice. I've left twice because of that when I would have spent way more on drinks had there not have been a cover charge. If there is an event or a band playing, then a cover is understandable.

A few new additions on Walker between 28th and 30th I noticed on a recent drive.

-A bicycle store (named "The Bicycle Store") has taken over the old screenprinting (I think that's what it was) service Alotta Action in the building just north of the Samir Groceries/Sauced. This is the bike shop that was off of Broadway Extension and 122nd - http://www.thebicyclestore.com/

-The convenience store on the SE corner of 30th and Walker has been cut in half and the north portion of the space is being renovated and worked on. Looks like a giant mural is inside on one of the walls. Heard someone mention it's going to be a taco place, but curious if anyone knows more.

I was in the convenience store a couple months ago and the clerk said the other side of the store would be Mexican restaurant.

I don't think this has been mentioned on here. The Other Room is currently being renovated and is going non-smoking. It will be interesting to see how that turns out. Like Sipango, it was patronized primarily by smokers. It should be reopening this weekend at some point, according to one of the bartenders at Picasso's I was discussing it with. Thoughts?

The back patio -- which is bigger than the inside space -- will still be smoking.

The patio is large and when I'm there notice many folks go to the patio to smoke as it is.. I don't think it will hurt them at all.

I think you are right. The bartender at Picasso's was talking about how he thought it was going to kill their business. I will say that it will now be back in my regular rotation again now that they are non-smoking. I used to hang out there quite often but when I quit smoking, I stopped going there.

The remodel will also include a much needed second bathroom. BrandonTOR, as he is known, posted that the remodel would only take a week. The included picture was taken yesterday. You be the judge on if it will reopen this weekend. (Sorry for the sideways pic. Help is appreciated)

Nice, but only open until 2 or 3? Like Leaf & Bean on 36th/May who's only open until 1, they're probably gonna lose business to *$, which is open until late night, and we go to *$ because they're open, not because we like their coffee best (we try to support local every single time we shop/eat/drink, but places like this make it harder to do because of their limited hours), but they're the only ones around us open later than mid-afternoon. Not everybody gets up at the ass-crack of dawn and goes to bed at 10....

This. In fact due to my schedule, late night is when I am the most active.

If anywhere in OKC could support something like this late night, it's probably the Paseo. Regardless, I am really glad this is opening and it will be a great addition to the neighborhood.

Yeah, I thought later hours would be perfect for the Paseo, but the lady at the Paseo Arts office (had to pick up a new OKCityCard) yesterday said it might be like Pete said - waiting until more things are up, then extending their hours.

I hadn’t seen this thread before and accidentally hit the 1st page from 2007 instead of the latest posts. The first thing I thought was, Paseo is nothing at all like this, not even close. Then I saw the date of the post. Paseo has come a long way in 10 years.

So happy Holey Rollers is open primarily for the coffee! The Paseo strip didn't have a walk-in espresso shop. My family and I were there at 8:15 this Sunday and I can see that becoming a regular trip.

Also, Picasso's has started selling a bottled, 16 oz version of their cold brew. Highly recommended.

The Paseo is taking off and we break down all the new projects (http://www.okctalk.com/content.php?r=507-The-Paseo-is-taking-off-and-we-break-down-all-the-new-projects)

The Paseo is one of Oklahoma City's first urban districts, blending arts and culture and eclectic businesses and surrounded by an interesting mix of housing of all types.

http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/paseo061418a.jpg

After decades of watching other districts like The Plaza and Midtown and neighoring Uptown get all the attention with lots of new restaurants, bars and retail, The Paseo is in now the middle of a new wave of expansion and redevelopment that is bringing new life and interest to the area, along with growing crowds.

One of the district's anchors and biggest draws, the well-loved Picasso Cafe, continues it's popular run after a modest but impactful renovation. Even more attention was paid to the adjoining bar, The Other Room, which has seen a thorough remodeling complete with new booths and a freshening that retained the nieghborhood bar charm while making welcome improvements inlcuding cozy new booths. One of the biggest changes is that the bar is now non-smoking apart from the expansive back patio.

http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/picasso061418.jpg

http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/otherroom061418.jpg

Proprietor Shaun Fiaccone and his Humankind Hospitality group also has three new projects underway in the district. The ambitious Frida (http://www.okctalk.com/showthread.php?t=43517&p=1001827#post1001827) is now well under construction at the key corner of NW 28th and Walker, already starting to fill a vacant lot at the district's south entrance. Frida will feature southwestern cuisine, a large patio and The Daley will be separate craft cocktail bar with its own identity.

http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/frida061418.jpg

http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/frida061418a.jpg

This week, work started on OSO (http://www.okctalk.com/content.php?r=486-Red-hot-Paseo-to-get-another-ambitious-restaurant-and-bar), Humankind's venture at the Pueblo at Paseo, an elevated taqueria with a creative cocktail menu and a design by AHMM architects that will create a large outdoor space covered by a modern trellis.

http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/oso061418.jpg

OSO will join the already popular Scratch (http://www.okctalk.com/content.php?r=415-Norman-s-Scratch-plus-2-more-restaurants-set-to-open-in-Paseo-project) and Buttermilk Southern Slider (http://www.okctalk.com/showthread.php?t=43709&p=1009503#post1009503)s, each with their own patios at the Pueblo complex and each already cultivating a loyal following.

http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/buttermilk061418a.jpg

The Pueblo, the first completely new build in the Paseo in decades, is completely leased with Braid Creative, Smash Bangles, Herban Gardens, Camp Pixel and Eric Bloemer Photography.

Next to Frida, the Paseo Studios (http://www.okctalk.com/showthread.php?t=43803&p=1013051#post1013051) project is also under construction and will provide small retail and gallery space right along Walker, stretching the Paseo south while the northern edge of Updtown is an easy few blocks to the south.

http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/paseostudios061418.jpg

Nearby, Holey Rollers has brought a much needed coffee / beverage / pastry place to the heart of the district which along with Buttermilk provides morning activity to the district for commuters and locals who often walk from the surrounding neighborhoods.

At NW 30th & Walker The Root continues to offer live music and lots of craft beer while El Fogoncito (http://www.okctalk.com/showthread.php?t=43397&p=997837#post997837) recently opened with delicious Mexican food served in a friendly and casual atmosphere.

http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/fongoncito061418.jpg

And the Red Rooster will soon reopen under new management after a full remodel and expanded kitchen, as the historic bar will also go non-smoking.

http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/redrooster061418.jpg

All of this added to the exisitng galleries, boutiques and restaurants that has always made The Paseo one of the most charming and unique spots in OKC.

I have to say that I've become a big fan of The Other Room.

Such a great neighborhood bar and the changes were great without destroying any of the character. Plus, they recently revised their beer list and while you can still buy some inexpensive brands, they have a decent assortment of craft beers too.

I'm starting to regret not having bought within walking distance of the Paseo and Uptown. Still some affordable housing and rentals, which is why this area should never become completely gentified and thus deprived of its charm.

But there are still some pretty rough areas, which is actually an opportunity.

People who complain about the high price of for-sale and rental property in the core should spend some time in this area. All types of property at a very wide range of prices.

Yeah, that was certainly what I was getting at. Seems like a good time to buy there before it gets bid up like Classen Ten Penn did as a result of Plaza District success. Paseo has much better bones than Plaza or really any district in OKC, and the surrounding housing stock is overall far better than it was for Plaza, but pockets of opportunity still exist and it hasn't had a bunch of speculation yet.

Craig's is relocating to Classen and 23rd, which I am sure has something to do with this. Kind of disappointed in that because that store really added to the Paseo's unique flavor. However, it will be nice to see yet another restaurant and bar. I wonder how Craig's will do being in a more auto-oriented setting?

Interesting, wonder exactly where? Lots of places they could go. And yeah, they seem to be more of a "walk-by, how-cool-is-this-let's-go-in" place, not a destination someone would drive to or stop by if driving past...

Regarding Craig's Emporium, I have been working on a story about this but will share the basics.

The 23rd and Classen location was to be a 2nd store. Work already started before the builiding in the Paseo was sold and even after it did change hands, both the new landlord and Craig wanted to work things out.

For whatever reason that didn't happen (the coming restaurant actually needed some of Craig's space, among other issues) and now the new location will become the only location.

The space is actually what has been most recently used as Macia's Dance Center, just west of Classen on 23rd.

Bummed about Craig’s leaving Paseo. It’s an institution there and I’ve always loved going in, partly because of the space. Glad it survives, but Paseo’s character changes a bit. Such is the nature of commercial districts. That said, I’d much rather have seen one of the rarely-open art galleries replaced instead.

It's a funky gift shop with a really bohemian vibe. Candles, incense, garden art, jewelry, books, some stuff that borders on the old Starwind. LBGTQ-friendly stuff, greeting cards, statuary, essential oils, ornaments at Christmas time. It is a definite throwback to the nineties...in a very good way though.
