Can anyone recommend a good instructor or studio in NW OKC for beginning acoustic guitar lessons? Someone gave my 18 y/o son a guitar, and he has decided he wants to learn to play. Not being musically inclined, I'm at a loss as to where to go, and hate to just pick someone out of the phone book.

I don't know anyone on the NW side, but if you call Gilliam's in Norman and ask for Todd, he might know someone. 405-321-0080

You might want to try buying some instructional DVD's from a place like Musician's Friend | Your Online Music Instrument & Pro Audio Store | Best Prices, Great Service (http://www.MusiciansFriend.com) . I see these things all the time and they look amazing, plus they are a one-time expense, unlike going to weekly lessons. It seems to me that music lessons these days are priced through the roof and it makes a lot of sense to try other means if your son is motivated to learn.

You also might try calling a local university and seeing if any of the music staff or students for that matter do private lessons in their off-hours.

Sam Latture is who I took them from at Driver a long time ago. Not that they took but that was more me than him, I know others that he did well with. He has a website, Sammy's Guitar (http://www.samlatture.com/) that has some learning aids and such on it.

Call Larsen's at 63rd and Northwest Expressway. They have guitar instructors there for a reasonable price. A few of my students take guitar and bass there.

Call Rawson Music in south OKC. Mackey is an exceptional guitar player and gives lesson. 634-3997.

I've known of people taking guitar lessons from an instructor at OCU. I can't recall his name, though.

Dyron Batey is a good acoustic teacher. He taught my son. He teaches in the studio behind Edmond Music. Which isn't far from NW OKC. It's worth the drive. He teaches full time so scheduling is pretty easy. 405-226-9661
Also, Blake Lennon in Norman is an excellent teacher but more for electric than acoustic. Beginning doesn't really matter which. He used to teach at the Academy Music of Norman but opened his own studio. www.blakelennonmusic.com 405-203-4621
Definitely worth it if you want to make the drive.
Tell either one Kari sent you. :)

I would also highly recommend Dyron Batey - top notch guitar instructor and a very nice guy.
