First black woman elected to Oklahoma House dies
Hannah Atkins, the first black woman elected to the state House of Representatives, died of cancer Thursday evening in a Maryland hospice. She was 86.

She has a senior living center here in OKC named after her. She was a nice lady.

I met her and Dr. Atkins on a few occasions many, many years ago now. Our meetings had nothing to do with politics as I was just a young salesman responding to her inquiry.
I remember Dr. Atkins as an exceedingly nice man and extraordinarily courteous.
Mrs. Atkins seemed almost regal to me. I thought she was tall but I realize now it was largely because of her posture. She projected this sense of calmness and competence.
