View Full Version : Storm Sirens
Nermel 05-31-2010, 08:33 AM Last night Edmond sounded their storm sirens when a severe thunderstorm was approaching the city. Numerous TV meteorologists had to reassure viewers that there was no tornado threat in Edmond.
Initial Speculation was that lightning may have caused the sirens to inadvertently be sounded. To find out today, this was intentional to alert people at Lake Arcadia, on boats.
This caused unnecessary fright to residents, especially those that lost electricity. They were audible from 2nd & Fretz, inside! I'm sorry, but last night's storm was moving VERY slow and if people on boats can't deduce that it is heading for them (or don't have a weather radio), they have no business piloting a boat.

I agree....I understand there are dangers being out on a lake, but if they want to do that, they need to set up a separate system for the lake. To my knowledge, Tornado sirens haven't been used for anything other than that and for someone to suddenly decide to use them as a tstorm warning system for a few boaters in a very small area is not a very smart idea.
OkieHornet 05-31-2010, 01:00 PM yeah, when we lost electricity at 2nd/Santa Fe and those sirens went off, it was a very unpleasant feeling, especially with all the racket the storm was making... does anyone know who the person making that decision would be? i think an email may be in order...

I had someone tell me that Students at Oklahoma Christian ran out of their apartments to a storm shelter and subsequently got hailed on...very bad decision by whoever did it.
When I go fishing at lake Eufaula, we actually use common sense, watch the weather before we go out, then we watch and see if the lightning/thunder is coming closer. Sorry, but if the people on Arcadia couldn't tell that strobe light of a storm was coming, they shouldn't be on the lake in the first place.
hipsterdoofus 06-01-2010, 11:31 AM Apparently there is a system just for the lake and the whole thing was a human error:

I'm sorry, but if someone lives in central oklahoma and doesn't have some sort of "weather radio", they deserve whatever fright comes there way from losing electricity.

OK, that's the stupidest post ever. This wasn't a legit alarm that was suppose to go off in association with a tornado. Re read the posts regarding the situation. It was a warning that was suppose to go out to Arcadia Lake goers only---not all of Edmond. I was up there when they were going off. I was weather aware up to that point of the electricity going out. I went and stood outside while the sirens went off! Yeah, it was an awesome storm--lightning, thunder, and torrential rain wise--but that was it.

Soo.. lets say you HAVE a weather radio...and those post automated warnings....and its 10:45 at night, so you can't see anything. Your tornado sirens go off and you have no power. So the lack of anything on your weather radio is supposed to make you feel BETTER while the sirens are going off? Doubtful.
